Glazer: Golf’s Tiger Turning into Paper

tiger+woods+lindsey+vonn1One of sports biggest names may be coming to the end of his storied golf career…

Tiger Woods just pulled out of yet another golf tournament. Woods just finished his worst tournament ever at the Phoenix Open last week.

And remember, it was Tiger Woods who took golf to another level around the world. He won his first major tournament The Masters in 1997. However it’s been seven years since Woods last major win at the US Open in 2008. While he maintained his No. 1 ranking for another 6 years, Woods was unable to win another major as he continues to chase Jack Nicklaus record of 18 majors.

Tiger has 14 but he’s been stuck there for 7 years.

He’s continued to win lesser tournaments and compete well in some majors, but clearly the magic has faded.

UnknownIn recent years Woods greatest hit was the famous fight with his wife in November 2009.

And he’s not been the same since.

She found out he was a serial cheater and went after him with a golf club. They divorced and things have been tough for The Great One ever since.

Tiger’s now in his late 30’s and he may never reach that magic No. 18.

Not with the majors anyway.

So Woods remains in second with 79 all time wins – three behind Sam Snead and six more than Jack. Though Jack still has the most majors.

Between Woods mental issues, injuries and father time, he’s a paper tiger

Certainly when compared to what he once was for nearly two decades anyway

And as we all know, while great offers can play on into their 50’s, winning majors after 40 isn’t something many have done on a regular bases.

Woods has had a fantastic run and t’s sad to see it ending.

I think most of us that were not big golf fans-  prior to his entry on the scene – watched on Sundays to see how Tiger was doing.

No mas.

Good piece Craig but I do take a bit of issue with your statement that most of us were not big golf fans prior to Tiger’s entry on the scene. We are both older guys ( past 60) as are many others here. I think Tom Watson made a lot of us here in Kansas City that were not big golf fans prior to his first win in 1975, big golf fans after that. For about a 10 year span, Tom was a stud on the tour. Had a great run on the Senior Tour as well, for a while at least. Missing the short putt at the British Open and losing to Stewart Cink in 2009 still hurts.

For those younger readers here, you are probably correct about them not being big golf fans prior to Tiger’s entry on the scene.

    • Stomper says:

oops, first win was 1974, my bad.

    • hahhararley says:

this JOKE missed every major sports event last year…from
the royals to the chiefs. He’s a mess.
and now you let him write about tiger. Any bets this writer
never picked up a club except to smash a window.
too many incorrections to go over….Tiger made golfthe billion
dollar game….remember they would pay him millions just to
      show up at a tournament.
Now “know nothing” about anything writes this crap.
and you were wrong…long after hisaffairs there was a year he
was ranked #1…..again massive mistakes by someone who
      knows nothing about sports.
the experts say that he totally wore his body out with his swings..
and that his back is the reason for his problems along with his
      core and legs.
But not one mention about that in your story….
      another major faceplant for glaze.
sorry dude…go back to what you know something about.

  2. Old Man Kissel says:

    It was bound to happen.

Tiger Woods was a guy who never knew adversity. He was told from the moment he picked up a golf club that he was the alpha and omega. He was the center of everyone’s world.

He never felt adversity or hardship either in his personal life or in his golf game.

That of course changed the moment his wife found out about his affairs and lashed out at him. Woods arrogance and his wife telling him off was the starting point of his downfall.

For the first time ever Woods was told he’s nothing special. And from that time on his golf game has been in shambles. Woods is now a has been.

Maybe he’ll win another major. I could see him winning the Masters or British Open years from now in the same vain that Tom Watson almost won the BO a few years ago.

Americans love comeback stories. But he’s the thing. Americans love comebacks for people with personalities. People perceive Woods to be nothing but a robot. A robot with a giant Nike emblem on his chest like that circle on Iron Man’s armor.

In interviews he never showed any personality. He never took up any causes. He never ruffles anyone’s feathers. He never seemed like a jerk, but he was never interesting either.

He was just the best golfer in the world at one time.

The only two times Woods seemed interesting was his painful interview with Oprah explaining his race as cablinasian, or whatever. And of course his affairs.

I think Woods retires this year. Living his life out of the camera’s eye. He may want to try the SR when he becomes eligible and board. But I think this is the last year you see him play golf.

    810 scoops 610 once again…

    • Gassedup says:

      Speaking from experience?

    • Marinovich says:

You should read up on the father of Tiger Woods. Yes the world thought he was a prodigy since they first saw him on that TV Show. But no “adversity”? I’m not one to throw out the race card because its usually BS, but I am not sure how many black kids were playing golf in the early 90’s. In fact I don’t remember ever seeing a black person under the age of 30 playing golf until Tiger came around.

Also, being a “prodigy” the “next big thing” comes with its own adversities. Ever heard of a fella named Todd Marinovich?

      • ILoveAmerica says:

Check out an AAU basketball tourney out in JOCO sometime. Goodness gracious are parents over the top with youngsters sometimes.

  3. glenn says:

His father never taught him how to deal with people who think he’s a dirtbag. He can deal with people farting when he’s about to swing, but he can’t stand the fact people think he’s a lowlife.

From what I heard, it wasn’t just affairs. He was so arrogant that he’d routinely invite hookers to parties at the house with his wife acting as hostess. Apparently, he didn’t think THAT would lead to problems. He paid one hooker 10 million USD hush money AFTER the divorce.

His career peaked years ago. He doesn’t possess the integrity to launch a successful comeback.

    • hahhararley says:

      wrong…stop reading star magazine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Marinovich says:

Ummmm…. Michael Ivin was supposedly doing coke in the lockerroom during games, Ray Lewis allegedly killed someone, Pete Rose was betting on games. Last I checked integrity has very little to do with success.

  4. Kerouac says:

“And remember, it was Tiger Woods who took golf to another level around the world.”

    – and became the Bonds* of his sport in the process; all in their PED-less primes, give me Palmer, Nicklaus or Hogan any day of the week.

  5. chuck says:

    Jesus fuc*kin Christ.

For all or you morons, that think Sports Heroes are a great substitute for Fathers or Mothers, vote Progressive.

glenn, God Bless ya, but what the fu*k are you talking about? Integrity? Seriously dude, gimme a fu*kin break. The list of Ray Lewis, Rae Carruth, type pukes seems endless. Here is a guy, who, with the exception of familial peccadillos, which perceived severity in the marketplace cost him hundreds of millions and subjected him to national censure and opprobrium admitted his mistakes, came back and competed at the highest of levels.

    Old Man Kissel.

Are you on acid? Do you play golf? “Never knew adversity”?

So, the next great golfer, or, the PGA’s glorious antecedents just popped out of mommy’s vagina like a fu*kin Golf Jesus cannon. No “Adversity”.

Tiger Woods, categorically, metaphysically made golf what it is today. The constant bets, on ESPN, on PTI, on Around the Horn, incessantly, interminably, for, listen up IDIOTS, was who to take, TIGER, or THE FIELD. This was 15 fu*kin years, 15 fu*kin years, again 15 fu*in years. He changed the way America looked at, appreciated and, in those unbelievable great moments, elevated golf beyond even a mystical plane.

    You guys really, really suck.

He cheated on his wife. Look, this is terrible and there is a price to pay. Did this fu*ker not pay it? Loss of income, loss of his kids (They are over seas a lot) loss of respect, and, two years, where, in my opinion, he would have won at least twomore majors and many PGA championships. It is a PERSONAL matter. It disgusts me, that we can all, pass judgment so capriciously and extemporaneously from our perches in the aerie. It is so, so phony and sanctimonious.

Tiger Woods is a far, far better golfer, in my opinion, than Jack N. The courses are tougher, longer and more difficult. I admit the clubs, balls and technology is a light year better, still, if the hole is longer, the variable in degree and difficulty offsets that same technology. PGA golf courses all over the United States “Tiger Proofed” their courses as he brutalized and destroyed the competition.

    Lets review azzholes.

Why do you hate the Great Tiger Woods? Did he win too much against the field? Did you lose money betting against him? Is he the Hero that you wanted in you father? Did he not show the “personality” you approve of?

Here is the deal. No matter what happens in the future (I would love, love, love to see him come back.), the fu*kin wind, on and off of every golf course in the world, blows around this guy. He is the straw that stirred the drink in the world of golf for the last 15 years and for the foreseeable future. If he disappointed you so much when he cheated on his wife, then I gotta tell ya, you need to get a life. We have all made mistakes and God Bless you guys who only make one or two. My middle name is mistake and Tiger, the greatest golfer the world has seen to this point, was NEVER my hero. He was a great athlete, that I loved to watch, because I love golf.

Glazer, he won 5 fu*kin PGA tournaments the year before last. He may not be the same now, but he was ok, until the latest spate of injuries. He is, maybe, a “Shot Fighter”. He generated torque with is core, and his core, back, legs, knees might be gone. If that is true, it is the end of something, absolutely mystical.

    Me, I will miss it.

    • chuck says:

One more time, you guys are full, full of sh*t. The straight line reference drawn to the diminishment of accomplishment on the golf course by way of porking some chik from Denny’s is a straight line reference to your wet by every rain, blown by every wind adherence to the 24/7/365 new cycle chow you suck up in the barnyard.

    • Phaedrus says:

When is your next World Cup race “Chuck”? I hope your knee is holding up ok.

How about that soundtrack? How ’bout those shots!!??!!

  7. mark smith says:

Chuck pretty much said it all. I will add that Tiger has changed his swing 3 or 4 times now and as many swing coaches. In the next year or two I think he finds his Bagger Vance gets his mind right and becomes as good as he ever was.

  8. hahhararley says:

he writers on kccc have combined never done anything significant
    intheir lives.
they’re just negative haters trying to make a small name for
    themselves.
go play in your sandbox…you will never equal the greateness of those
    you try to bring down.
stfu….you have accomplaished nothing near what these people have done…
    til you done…f*ck off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Nick says:

Tiger will surpass Snead soon: if not this year then the next.

Then he will have won more professional golf tournaments than any other human being. Period. This feat will not be surpassed in your lifetime, nor probably in mine. Given the math of stats …yes, someone will probably overcome his total wins, but that will (putatively) occur in your grandchildren’s children’s lifetime.

As to whether Tiger adds 5 more major wins is irrelevant at this point (though I would personally expect 2-3 more major wins in the next 10 years): it’s patently obvious that he is one of the best players ever to pick up the sticks; arguments for the best golfer are purely subjective and lead nowhere.

And do not forget Tiger’s healthy enough to pay well into his 50’s, should he retain the desire; maybe another late major before he hits the Loafer’s Tour? Quite possible.

Overall, much as I’m loathe to mention it, this post is nothing but troll bait, carelessly written by one who barely comprehends the sport. Even for a blog this is substandard fare.

    Try harder.

    • Phaedrus says:

Snead’s record is for PGA Tour wins, not professional wins. I believe Player has about 160 professional wins. You might want to try harder, genius.

      • Nick says:

Tiger sits @ around 140 professional wins right now – I expect even if he never wins another major he will still easily tie or top Snead’s number. Not that it’s a consideration in evaluating Tiger’s–or anyone else’s– career ; Snead’s PGA wins only number 23, exactly why his 160 career wins are rarely ever used as a benchmark.

  10. hahhararley says:

old man…you belong in john knoxvillage with the rest of your aged old
    prognoisticators.
look up the numbers…tigers has very many years to go.
    you are a loser.
810 is a decent money maker…not anywhere near 610 boss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
let meshow you the numbers…..good luck…old man…..don’t speak out without
knowledge of what you thing you know…halrel7

  11. rww says:

And do not forget Tiger’s healthy enough to pay well into his 50’s

Are you kidding? He’s hurt more than the senior tour golfers! I think he needs to get multiple girlfriends again to get rid of that pent up anger!

  12. CG says:

I hope he does come back. Hard to believe he won’t win some more tournaments. Another major, who knows. It would now be a HUGE deal if he did. I think he will get better but no he won’t be what he was. Who is. Well Tom Brady is! Tom is going to go for his 5th Super Bowl win, remember he played well enough to win all 6…he wants that 5th win to be alone at the top. Montana may have been as good or better at some point but not for 12 straight years and now 13.

    • hahhararley says:

      another joke. you can’t compare these 2 sports…one is a team sports…the
other you’re out there alone with your clubs.
without welker/vinateri/bellicheck/moss/all the great running backs…
the strong defense…..especially vinny….brady would be just another
long forgotten qb…and besides he’s a freaking cheater!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
no accolades to that guy……..and please stop theb.s.

  13. Rick Nichols says:

I think Tiger’s last hole-in-one probably involved a hooker, which shouldn’t be confused with a hook shot that sent the ball onto the green of an adjoining hole by mistake and into the cup. The words Tiger and Ryder should never be used in the same sentence again.
