Jack Goes Confidential: ‘Interstellar’—Psychological Mind Bending Melodrama

interstellar-2014-movieIf there is a single word that best describes INTERSTELLAR it would  be AMBITIOUS…

Ambitious in the movie’s approach of marrying human emotions and sci-fi physic theories. And if there’s a central theme, it has to be, do not go gently into that good night—which is repeated several times throughout director Christopher Nolan’s new epic.

The storyline has Matthew McConaughey playing a former NASA test pilot, widower and father of two who has turned to farming after the agency’s massive cutbacks.

But the earth is slowly dying. The land is becoming a wasteland while only corn will grow and massive dust storms mark the eventual end to our planet as we know it.

That’s when McConaughey is coerced by the now secret NASA agency and his former mentor Michael Caine to command “the most important mission known to space travel.”

Seems NASA has discovered a wormhole among the many black holes out there and the proposed mission should allow McConaughey and his crew to take his ship to new galaxies in search of a planet for possible future human habitation.

Of course INTERSTELLAR is much more complex than that but those are the basics of this very technical story that delves deeply into relativity theories, physics and time travel logisitics—some of which are dished out on a very high intensity level.

“We’re the bridge…..”

o-JESSICA-CHASTAIN-INTERSTELLAR-facebookWhen you see INTERSTELLAR, don’t get too fidgety during the film’s first act which seems to almost never end. Because it’s important to the melodramatic aspects of the story yet to come.

And the film’s breakthrough into the fifth dimension is something to behold!

And even though the visuals are spectacular, it is Hans Zimmer’s pounding musical score that kicks things into overdrive.

It’s an almost three hour long trip into cinematic time travel logistics.

A complex cosmos, that always maintains the human emotions and bonds between parent and child.

“They didn’t bring us here to change the PAST!”

(That’s enough of a clue. You’ll find out soon enough.)

From INCEPTION through THE DARK KNIGHT trilogy, comes Christopher Nolan’s ambitious, psychological mind bender INTERSTELLAR—a gravitational adventure of immense proportions—scoring a complex B.

(Reviewed in IMAX format at AMC Town Center.)

I see where the movie opened in several cities still able to show it on film last night. Guess no more film in KC?

read another review of this film and the writer concurs with jack on this film. also read why they do so – wanted the action to be set in framework of theoretical possibilities based on the Theory of Relativity. also, an interesting sidebar interview with Nolan about his use, and look, of robots in the film.

might be one i’ll have to actually go to a theater to see instead of waiting for PPV.

My interplanetary movie-loving wife and 17 year-old daughter Savannah saw it Saturday at Legends at the 9:50 p.m. show.

They splashed back down in LA at about 1:30 a.m. after taking the measure of the 169 minute movie.

    And the verdict was…

    They LOVED it

Made my daughter cry like three times and they both rated it 9 out of 10 or higher.

    Saw it yesterday, Jack and…

It’s a very good movie and I think you rated it wisely.

Hate to say it, but it’s almost a chick flick in a sense. Lots of teary dad/daughter moments.

Nightcrawler was killer though and I’m with you on giving it an A!
