Glazer: Note to My Fans, Sorry I Got Carried Away Yesterday

Forgive Me 9-1Okay, it was a bit much, I got a little carried away yesterday…

My Chiefs story was a little overly harsh as a result of my being put down by radio and comments section folks over my all summer long call that the team would suck. However it was clear to me after last year’s final game that the Chiefs would be very bad without some major additions.

Unfortunately, I saw no such additions, just a bad team getting worse.

Sure, some local media guys said, “We’d take a step back.” Maybe have an 8-8 or 9-7 year. But by preseason’s end I saw KC as a team looking to win a game or two maybe three.

And for the life of me, I couldn’t figure out why it was just me.

iStock_000009006179XSmallSO WHEN IT ALL CAME TRUE YESTERDAY – and it has, sorry – I GOT A BIT PRIDEFUL.

That was wrong of me.

BECAUSE THIS IS OUR TEAM.

And I should want the best for our city which I do. I’m just sick of the team’s owner and management lying to all of us.

There was and is no plan.

My columns explaining that this year would be a repeat of 2011 – that followed the fake out 2010 season – are on the dime.

Sadly.

Is there fault, fingers to be pointed? Yes. Owner Clark Hunt pulled the trigger on former Chiefs GM Scott Pioli way too late. Hunt is not a football guy like his father. He means well, but clearly coach Andy Reid and new GM John Dorsey are not the solution here.

help-wanted-kccGranted the cupboard was bare.

The Chiefs had no stars except Jamaal Charles, a very good Derrick Johnson and the addition of a solid quarterback in Alex Smith. The rest of the players were maybes or busts. I told you that Eric Berry, Brandon Flowers and now Eric Fisher are just no goes.

The crime is the front office had no cap money, which is their fault.

So they couldn’t buy anyone, which again, is their fault. And we might be the league’s worst drafting team in the modern football era. Dorsey can’t draft either. He gets an F twice now.

D Thomas looks good, but didn’t play. Dexter McCluster did, BUT FOR THE TITANS. RYAN SUCCUP DID, BUT FOR THE TITANS.

See my point?

We needed impact draft players, not projects.

How do we fix this mess? We need a young, think-outside-the-box head coach after Reid is released after next year (I hope its this year). Dorsey also needs to go.

They both seem out of step with the new NFL.

Again, maybe that’s not totally fair – they had very little work with – but they attracted ZERO stars here. And the players outside KC aren’t buying in to Reid/Dorsey. The 2-6 end to last season did that.

Screen shot 2012-06-28 at 8.18.48 AMAm I a sports expert?

For the small amount of time I put in, I sure am.

I put real money up on bets every week. I put my money where my mouth is and I predict games at a 70% win clip.

Yesterday I started out at 3-3 – I’ll do better. Nobody wins them all.

I’m not a fulltime sports guy. I have to run a business or two. Not just sports.

In college I once thought about being an on air broadcast guy and working my way up to the national level. That would have been nice. I’d have enjoyed that and been good at it with my humor and voice. I kinda regret I didn’t follow that path, but that’s spilt milk now.

target_on_my_back_tshirtSo again, I’m sorry for being a bragging jerk yesterday.

I was just so sure I was right about these Chiefs. And while most fans thought the Chiefs would have a tougher year, they never thought it would be this bad.

We need to find a young quarterback, a good young coach and staff. We need a complete rebuild of the team. What the Chiefs are doing now just doesn’t work. Hello.

So yeah, I’m not a full time sports analyst.

However much of what I say will happen. Yes, I was wrong about the Royals, they seem to be headed for the post season and I was a little under on MU’s football team last year.

Hey, it happens.

I’m always glad to be wrong if it means that our guys can do well.

you might be right craig… probably ARE right… but good grief it’s just the first game. come back when they’re 0-4.

  2. jimmy says:

Speaking of Succop, was anyone else smiling a bit when he nailed those field goals? I was actually really mad when Succop was released. I know they say they needed to make some room for the Smith contract. QB > Kicker…I get it. Still, who looked really good at their job yesterday and who didn’t? The new kid on the team looked shell shocked out there and Alex Smith didn’t exactly look like he was worth that new contract.

  3. harley says:

have not followed chiefs lately…beenbusy and been to many royals games…
talked sunday with an insider in thechiefs organization…theres problems that
are occurring now that were never thought of.
see glaze doesn’t get into the strategy/insand out s of the workings…I do…and
    heres what insiders aresaying.
    1. capology. the chiefs were hamstrung. not much money towork with because
pioli made some stupid ass deals that stretchedthe pay out into multiple years.
when a team has to let go a reliable kicker making 1.5 million to bring in a
rookie unknown…especially since kchas never had much luck scoring touchdowns
in the red zone….you know there’s problems. the insider said probably no one
realized the situation with the cap that would come up this year…hence giving
away starters from last years team who were huge players. the insider said probably
reid didn’t or wasn’t aware of the situation and was essentially forced to work
with subpar players like avery and cooper and smith….who could never really
be starters on another team…but because of money and cap concern he was
stuck with the players becauase of costs. seriously….dexter was the exception
getting a big contract with Tennessee….but the insider says and believes that
few players or coaches were aware of the horrible cap situation kc was left in.
actually…they were pissed….not only because they couldn’t improve their
team…but also because the money was there to bring in better receivers/
backs/etc. the chiefs go t caught in the cap web and its going to affect themfor
years to come. reid probably knew nothing about this…but we can thank the
ieeptitude of pioli and his crew in putting us in this money crunch.
    2. coaches….reid ran some pretty unorganized and “easy” camps this summer.
this team was not ready to play on sunday. of course major injuries and
penalties kept some important players out but reid is very lenient with players
and coaches. coaches get a full week off during the off season each mnth.
players were not pushing themselves in camp this summer…..too many
distractions….and with reid running a slow easy camp the players were not
ready for anyone on sunday….they were out of place….and their conditioning
showed also…injuries that usually don’t occur until the later part of the
season…derrick falling over his own feet….not pressing the players to compete
in training camp. This insider said it was he easiest camp he’s seen. Many players
were returning ….so they should have been working harder after 2013.
Coaches are treated easy by reid….even with severre breakdowns in the final
gamesof 2013 he made few changes overall. Drafting was a joke. Many draft
insiders considered ford being a bust…we’l wait and see.
    3. arrogance: making the playoffs turned the entire chiefs organization into
arrogant bastards. the insider said fans were upset that specific games had higher
ticket prices…a bad move considering they had just one good year under their
belt. promtions were hard to come by….long time ticket hlders and suite
owners were treated like crap……all after just one year.
the chiefs just were not rready for the little success they enjoyed in 2013.
it almost as if they rage they had after fans treated them bad for so many
years that they had a vendetta against those who paid big mney to be a part
of the team for years. Even on station was eseentially eliminated.

its more than just what happened on the field sunday. the chiefs as an
organization needs to regroup. the insider said that the situation could
remain rough for the entire year. And that means trouble for a fledgling
team with almost no players. Yes they had quite a few players as pro
bowlers…but to break up that offensive line was absolutely insane considering
you have the best runner overalo in football…few receivers with speed causing
smith to have to stand in the pocket 1-1.5 second too long for them to get
open…and and a cut and paste linevv that had never played togeterh butalso
    losing Stephenson for 4 games.
as I said to one of the former chiefs players ….”there’s still 15 games to go”
..they look at me and frowned…but they still have to show up to play the
    season.
also glaze…50/50 on openin weekend is horrible. handicapper make their
money in the first weeks of the season until the oddsmakers realize who’s
going to be good in the season and who won’t. If the odds makers gave the
chiefs 8-9 games before the season…that’s going to shift real fast…going
50/50 on the first weekend with all the really bad matchups could prove
disastrous for you this year. Amdn remember…we’re watching you.
Why not take some big games…mizzzou? that was a gimme….whenvdo
you show your guts and take the tough games like seattle/pats/etc.
…….overall you lose if you add in the vig….we’re watching.

    • Good God says:

Jesus LORD, you are an idiot.

      1) It took an “insider” to help you realize that the Chiefs had cap trouble? What else? “my inside says… that the team… whoscore many more points will win…” look moron, EVERYONE knows that the cap was in bad shape. to suggest that the head coach DIDN’T is hilarious.

      2) saying that Smith wouldn’t start for another team totally invalidates any other statement you might make. it’s the dumbest thing I’ve read on this site.

      3) you’re also an idiot for thinking that Succop was a loss. he’s the 16th most accurate active kicker in the NFL. so, exactly middle of the pack.

      • harley says:

        good god…you’re an idiot….
smith was sean smith…whoplayed last year..
how many pro bowl players did chiefs have last season..
        quite a few I’d say..maybe more than 90% of the teams…
everyone knew the cap was in bad shape in august..
but whoever was in charge of the cap over the pioli years
made the situation worse by pushing back dollars.
its was back loaded pay that hurt the cap…not the up front…
and lets talk about the players on the chiefs in 2013 who
were not on the team in 2014…pretty significant players
including some really good d backs and offensive
linemen who made the team a playoff team…
now good god…go back and study what I just taught you
and go back to trying to figure out that y ou’re the fool
        in the end.
look at the 2013 and 2014 rosters…any good players
        missing?
good god you fool…another phony in our midst with stupid
rebuttals to the always right Harley.
maybe next time you’ll not look like such an ass.
        thanks
        harley

    • Good God says:

      Oh, forgot this “gem”:

“…hence giving away starters from last years team who were huge players.”

      Seriously? Who?

Jon Asamoah? Sure, it’d be nice to have him now, but he’ll never be confused for a “huge player,” whatever the hell that means. Same with McCluster. Same with Tyson Jackson. you know nothing about football. just go away.

    • chuck says:

Harley’s idea of a “Chiefs Insider” is the guy in charge of urinal cakes from section 237 to 294.

      • harley says:

again…chuckles the sad old clown shows his colors.
any real facts or figures or even some stats to prove Harley
        wrong.
no…just another fool on the hill.
guys like you are a dime a dozen…idiots with no
        brains….
again….prove me wrong or go back to your lazy boy
recliner and fall asleep t 8pm like the old man you are.

  4. DSW-ESQ says:

You have absolutely nothing to apologize for… that was the WORST game I have ever witnessed- don’t know that there was even ONE exciting play from the Chiefs offense

  5. Kerouac says:

Don’t apologize, CG… you as I/select others may be more H.L. Mencken than Norman Vincent Peale, but with good reason.

Kerouac has followed this Kansas City Chiefs organization since day one 1963, so have seen and heard it all. ‘Fate’ certainly plays a part their now nigh on approaching half a century ‘also ran’, but perspective is everything (Jets have tread football waters longer, since ’68, and the Lions since ’57. MLB, the Cubs have been disappointing since 1908; the Royals 30 since ’85 seems moments ago, comparison.)

Green Bay has its Titletown, San Francisco and Los Angeles their cities of Champions. Kansas City? The biggest thing changed since the Chiefs arrived KC: once ‘innovators’ a football sense & elsewhere, no longer so. Toma’s beautiful field of dreams, the circle huddle, stack defense, tight I formation, success afield too. Today, their revolutionary (so I’ve heard) ticketing system & kudos a broadcast setup their linchpin. On the field?

Can you imagine them firing Stram today, as they did back in 1974? After he won two Championships, played for a third & had just 3 losing seasons in 15/only 1 his final 11? Not good enough. Fired due ‘what have you done for us lately’, all of 5 years since they won their last Championship. More$o due non-football bottom line: attendance down, fans grousing/spoiled past success, local busine$$ expressed unhappiness/perception advertising/revenue drop served get into the ear of Lamar Hunt: time for a change.

Flash forward 40 years: coffers full/Chief$ are worth a billion. Mi$$ion accomplished, an echoing trophy case tarnished/in need dusting something other. How much would Stram & his ego / resume be welcomed today? True, at the end his team had grown old & scouting post Klosterman’s departure never recovered. But, Hank was a trendsetter & innovator – he was also a ‘winner’, 3 years the most his teams ever went missing post season & owner the best coaching record AFL history & the most Championships won, a legacy that never has been replicated & perhaps never will be.

2014, KC has a good coach in Reid, but the Chiefs are no closer to being a winner.
In the same way some consider Schottenheimer to have been a winner, Andy and Marty are indistinguishableone another: only place it matters – 0 Championships.
Same for other ‘greats’ like Allen Rams/Redskins, Grant Vikings, Levy Bills, what separates them from Lombardi, select others – ‘results’ measured Championship/s, not did their teams ‘place’.

Today’s reality: fans age 43/younger have never seen an ‘winner’, Chiefs making post season one and done must suffice. The names as seasons change, but never the result. That they’ve not drafted #1 a young QB call their own in 30 + years as indicative their complacency as the rewards they have reaped, but that’s for another post.

K is right but people were saying that reeids personal life changed
his coaching philosophy…more on that later. thanks.
this team was not prepared to play…physically or mentally. you culd
see it from the moment they came on the field.
I happed to be watching carlos and he was kicking 60 yard field
goals before the game. when you have to sacrifice a pretty reliable kicker
to save money that final cut…somethings wrong.
especially since field goals aee what the chiefs bring from red zone
      possessions.
also…note the reason they didn’t give the ball more to Charles during
the game..very interesting quote that the titans shut down everything
the chiefs were going to do with him….that’s a quote from the
coach. Yet he had great games aainst teams who specifically defensively
lined up to take his running away…hes 30% of offense….why not
      adjust.
this team was not physically ready to play either…..one person who
sits right behind the chiefs bench noticed they were not physically
ready to play….heads down early in the game….
This team could recoup….but they need 4 or 5 games which could be
too late to save the season.
Reid knows receivers…yet our 4 outside receivers are probably
some of the worst in the league.
also… smith takes too long toget rid of the ball. can’t change that.
andhis receivers need 1-1.5 seconds longer than others to getbopen
which in the nfl is an eternity.
hopefully with bowe and some playing time together this can change…

  6. CG says:

HARLEY I think I covered the cap issues and no money being an issue. Reid is just gonna get paid and go. That’s all. Kinda like the KU coach, end game.

    • CG says:

      Charlie not Bill

    • harley says:

no you didn’t…you didn’t analyze that the pioli administration totally
screwed up the entire cap situation by back loading the money.
you never mentioned hat. everyone knew cap money was an issue but
that’s what was left from the previous gm.
the previous gm felt he needed a quick winner to garner support fast
in his new job. I will have more on this situation.
your analysis always are very simple…very easy to write about…but
I was with someone who knew and saw the future problems that were
created by the prvious gm. You never mentioned that.
Had the previous administration of the chiefs looked at it from a differenet
long term situation the chiefs could have had more to work with.
Whoever ran the cap numbers before reid got here was an idiot…whether
pioli or someone specifically assigned to handle it.
pioli was short sighted…but the blame has to be on hunt for not watching
      his dollars.
his dad watched every dollar…never let his wife take a cab to arrowhead…
lived at arrowhead….and if you were ever in his suite you saw the guy
was a very shall we say cheap man with his money.
      Clark fell asleep;\
I now wonder whether reid was aware of the situation after his first
season and whether he was able to identify that the team had screwed
up with the cap money prior to his signing.
I doubt it. My insider said that the team with the best “capologist”
has a huge advantage over other teams because it allows them
to bring in talent while spreading out the payments.
clark should have wached the checkbook!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HARLEY: *on the phone* “Faceplant, it’s me, any insider info on the Chief’s Cap Situation?”

FACEPLANT: “Uncle Jo Jo, I’m a part time janitor on game days out at the Stadium. I unplug toilets and mop the shi**ers. The only thing I hear is what a bunch of drunks are bitching about while they drain their weasels. What is all that noise in the background?”

HARLEY: “Shawnee Mission South is letting out.”

FACEPLANT: “Jesus Uncle Jo Jo, if they catch you out there again “upskirting” you are gonna do some serious time. Be sure and send me all the pictures you got today though.”

HARLEY: “Hang on Faceplant. *Leaning out of his Mazda 2000 Protege* Jennifer!!! Jennifer!!! Come here!!! *pulls his head back in the car* I think this little filly is finally coming around Faceplant.”

FACEPLANT: “Little filly my ass you freak, that’s my sister, your sister’s daughter!!”

HARLEY: “What a honey, I could tell she was gonna be a looker back in the 2nd grade, I got an eye for chicks and football my homey.”

FACEPLANT: “Uncle Jo Jo, I m telling mom.”

    HARLEY: “You still want pictures?”

    FACEPLANT: *click*

HARLEY: *to himself* “Now that is how ya do it Glazer. Good information. I am feeling the Chiefs this weekend, a big upset is in store. *cranks up “Creed” on the Pioneer Super Tuner and burns rubber out of the lot*
