Hearne: ‘The Point’ Most Listened to Station in KC August Radio Ratings

A pair of surprises top an otherwise sleepy August radio ratings book…

For starters, Entercom’s The Point 99.7 FM has come into it’s own and is now the most listened to station in the Kansas City market with a cume of 528,800 listeners.

“The Point has become a powerhouse,” says one radio exec not associated with the station or Entercom. “And I imagine it’s No. 1 in women listeners 25-54. It has the highest cume of any station in the market and that’s saying something. For two months in a row now The Point’s been the most listened to radio station in Kansas City.”

In terms of share, KFKF FM bounced back from its one month slide to retake the high ground.

“It looks like somebody forgot to turn their people meter on for a month, because something funny happened there,” quips the exec. “You don’t typically lose a share point and then gain it right back in the PPM world.”

images-1News-talk station KMBZ bounced back nearly a full share point from what may have been its lowest 12-plus ratings since switching to an AM-FM simulcast three years ago.

“It’s the time of the year news-talk stations generally go back up,” says the expert. “And you know, news stations get good books when bad things are happening and there are a lot of bad things happening in the world right now. The news-talk station in Cleveland for example went up from a 5.8 share to a 7.2.”

Similarly, KMBZ rose more than a point in adults 25-54 to a 7.1 share to capture the number two slot for its morning drive show. And from a 4.7 to a 6.4 share for its afternoon drive show, putting them in second place as well.

610 Sports slipped a mite – somewhat surprising given the Royals surge – but continued to outpace sports radio station WHB in weekly listeners 12-plus with a 3.4 share to WHB’s 2.4.

And last but not least, Paul Wilson‘s favorite radio station (and presumably, tax write off) KCPT TV’s The Bridge rose a whooping 25 percent from a 0.4 share to a 0.5. It ain’t much, but it’s a start.

Now on with the show…

Spin City from the Entercom camp. Especially the KMBZ rankings in #2 Adults 25-54 in their drive times…which are not anyone else s drive times.
The Points ratings are very impressive.
How about more 25- 54 numbers?

    • admin says:

Those are for the morning and afternoon drive shows specifically.

Not the 6 am to 10 am and 3 pm to 7 pm slots.

In other words, the morning show and Dane and parks in the afternoon

    • admin says:

      I’ll work on it.

As you probably know, radio dude, those can be hard to come by.

Unless somebody is feeding you just the positive ones for their particular station

I pray for the release that my death will bring. I long for it.

Thanks for the mention instead of turning to Craig for his analysis of ratings! I’m a LARGER than average donor to KCPT and The Bridge. I am, however, considering dropping all contributions since they put that reprobate beaner Tony on Ruckus!

    • CG says:

Come on Paul, I don’t get too involved in radio ratings. I have always questioned the way they come up the numbers.

I believe, like most things we grew up with, the internet world has taken another victim. Young people just don’t listen to radio much. They have their I Tunes cards. So the bigger numbers fall to stations playing older hits. Listeners are 30 and up, more 40 and up.

I believe 98.9 rules the roost cause of Johnny Dare’s morning show and that huge hard core KC audience that loves rock. Simple as that. Not the same in every city, Dare is almost unique. His rule will continue for several years. The 40 and 50 somethings will be around for years, so will Dare. Hey they have some younger followers as well.

Shows like KMBZ have a large following of baby boomers. They want to talk issues, hear whats going on in KC and America, family things and crime. Young folks, not so much. They are waiting to see how many likes they got on utube, so they are famous in their neighborhood of internet pals they never met. Way it is. I hate it. Wish the younger crowd went to movies, cared about our history and theirs, knew who the Beatles were and that the Chiefs were once the best team in the league. So much for wishing.

      I think there’s a story there. PW…

In fact I know there is.

And I suspect you are not alone, although I frown on your use of the word “beaner”

  4. Ron says:

Radio expert not associated with Entercom has spoken again. Come on administrator isn’t it about time to quit your silly games and call him by his real name of Robert Zueroweste? Everybody else does.

    • admin says:

      Easy, Ron…

You seem to think you – and everybody else reading KCC – know everything.

Frankly, I’m not so sure that anything close to a majority of readers even know who Bob Zuroweste is?

You obviously can’t spell his name right, so it must be a little foggy even for you.

So for those in doubt – Ron is referring to the former head of Entercom who is credited with launching and naming The Buzz, launching 610 Sports and a whole lot more.

However he is no longer involved in the KC market and works for another radio group in marketing.

I speak with Bob from time to time – he’s a new grandfather – but I also speak to a number of local radio executives.

Pretty much all of whom prefer to remain anonymous.

      Hey, that’s corporate radio 2014.

You accuse me of being a one trick pony, but based on my knowledge and interaction with a variety of sources, I can assure readers that it is you who are the one trick player in this game.

      • Old belinder guy says:

Correction: Cindy Schloss and Michael Keck launched 610 Sports. Not BZ. Also, when the Buzz was launched , it was top 40. It was nothing like the Buzz that exists now. he only thing that the3 same about the station is the name.

        • admin says:

Who do you think was running the show back then, belinder guy?

And who individually met with and hired the personalities on 610 Sports? And who oversaw the changes at The Buzz?

  5. Old belinder guy says:

I worked with Bob Z over at Belinder. He may have started some of these changes, but he wasn’t there long enough to see any of them through and he left the subsequent management team a mess to clean up. Neither of these stations appear to be anything near what the launch stations were. But yet, I ran into Bob at Cumulus last year ( he was pitching some sales system) and he introduced himself as “the guy who invented the Buzz.”. I mean really? He was a blow hard when I worked with him and it continues on today. Everyone knows (he’s in denial) that he was run off by Entercom ( given 90 days to find something else)and replaced by Schloss. He was run off by CBS/Wilks ( not sure of the timing) here in KC as the DOS, and then run off by Clear Channel as the GM in Dayton. Now matter how you slice it , that 0 for 3. I guess those credentials are good enough to comment “anonymously” in your columns as the industry expert. I suggest you expand your pool of experts.

    • admin says:

Geez Belinder guy, it must be nice to hide behind a silly, made up name.

Especially when YOU ARE DEASD WRONG on almost all counts/

      Seriously.

Zuroweste resigned from Entercom for health reasons that I won’t go into here but was fully aware of as is Entercom management.

He named the Buzz after his son’s baseball team and it started as an alternative rock station but initially was closer to Johnny Dare’s kingdom which did not make JD happy.

It evolved, but Zuroweste was there when it went full on alt, had Afentra and Lazlo and went thru the Pitch’s “Save the Buzz” campaign.

He practically single handedly put 610 Sports together, but it was far from his fault that guys like Whitlock and Bill Maas emploded.

Cindy Schloss didn’t clean up jack.

How long did she even last? Not two years as I recall.

He also launched WDAF FM Country which is doing quite well to this day.

      Did he have an ego?

You bet your life, but if you were an Alpha Dogg with the track record Z did you would too. Comes with success, ya know?

He left Cumulus here on a a rash of depression economy layoffs with a last in, first out employee policy.

I suggest you get over you little guy complex and try and view the world thru in focus glasses.

My name is on my comments and I stand by them

      You?

      Laughable.
