Valentine: The Curious Case of ‘Deadbeat Congressman’ Emanuel Cleaver

Cleaver

Original art by Mark Valentine

Kansas City’s very own Congressman in Washington D.C., The Honorable Rev. Emanual Cleaver is having his wages garnished…

I’ve never heard of a sitting U.S. Congressman allowing his reputation to be tarnished like this. Since it would be so simple to avoid it.

And I always thought Congressmen were good at back room deals. Cleaver could have worked out a payment plan with Bank of America. It would have avoided the label  Dead-beat Congressman.

Well, he’ got a payment plan now.

I should be shocked at the ineptitude on display here.

That we’ve got a Congressman so ignorant of how to do business that he agreed to a deal that left him personally responsible for a failed car wash. If he’s that bad with paperwork, I can only imagine what deals Kansas City messed up or missed out on when he was mayor.

bank-of-america_genericIt makes me wonder if Cleaver even reads, let alone understands the laws that he votes for on our behalf.  I cringe to think what easy prey he must be to the sharks he is among.

I should be stunned at the arrogance on display here.

Cleaver has a pattern of thinking the rules don’t apply to him.  When he was elected he owed back taxes. At first, he said they were paid. Then he was forced to admit that he’d been lying. I suspect the fact that he was elected anyway just added to that arrogance. I doubt that he feels very sorry for the rest of us who must pay taxes and bank loans.

thinkerYet even though I should be shocked and stunned, I am not.

When the last two paragraphs spilled off my keyboard, they seemed routine to the point of being cliché. A Congressman who has shady finances and questionable skills is hardly an earth shaking story. But one who is having his congressional paychecks garnished by creditors takes it to an unusual place.

So yes, I confess that I smiled.

      actually…..valentine…really nice art work…really nice!
maybe you and Wilson can have a merger and acquisition and
      you paint wilsons crates!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hahahahaha

  2. paulwilsonkc says:

This is all so surprising to me…. I would have assumed he just put the car wash on lay-away!
Actually, I”m still stumped over the fit he threw when someone spit on him and called him the dreaded N word…. but the video showed it wasn’t possible. How did that die a fast, quiet death?

  3. Hot Carl says:

I find it hard to believe that a guy who lied about being called the n word isn’t a reputable congressman.

  4. chuck says:

    Very dissapointing.

In my mind, I had hoped Manny Cleaver would empty out the Bill Changer and lug huge bags of quarters into Bank of America and dump them out on the manager’s desk every month. Or, even better, insert “Free Car Wash” coupons in the after hours “Deposit” slots with 30 day expiration dates and a picture of the former mayor, pants pockets turned inside out, head cocked just a little, hands turned towards the skys while shrugging his shoulders.

Bank of America has T Rexed American buttholes for years, so I gotta believe they deserve each other.

  5. John Altevogt says:

As amazing aas it is, there is actually something and someone lower than BOA. Never thought I’d see that day.

  6. CG says:

He is the most popular area politico in 50 years. Go figure. He sounds good, he may mean well. His follow through was never there. Even as Mayor. Its a tough job though and KC is so far gone its even tougher. The city is way gone. The only things that work are those privately held up like the Plaza and Brookside/Waldo, not much else, Westport could be, Manny never gave a crap I was there. With him and the stories, nothing more done…a city was left a drift, still is, not just by him, by all involved. We now need a dictator, a fact, to fix all this, if even then.

  7. balbonis moleskine says:

He has mastered the art of giving his district just enough pork so they don’t rise up and toss him out but not enough so that people won’t feel the need to go through the minister-industrial complex on the eastside to get anything done.

If God is real, there is going to be such an awesome place in hell for these charlatans that steal 10% of minimum wage paychecks.

    • hot harley says:

      NO BALBONEI….
his district is huge minority vote share…and he’s democrat and
      people love this guy….
he’s like millions of other americans whogot hammered in the
.ast couple years….if we didsome research we’d find he’s not the
      only deadbeat in d.c.
      McCain….Kerry…..they’re smart….they married more in
5 mintues than they could make/steal in 50 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. hot harley says:

I think many of the people on here are very naïve. Or they just don’t get it.
Cleaver is no different than any of them. He just got his paycheck hacked.
    happens every day ……..
he could have probably gotten some money for a vote…taken a donation…
or done what all the rest of the crooks in in kc and dc do.
    don’t youget it.
CHUCKLES THE SAD CLOWN IS DISAPPOINTED!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
tears of a clown! chuckles they’re all doing the same stuff…don’t you get
    it.

Christie and his gang of thieves….jail and kicked out of office when its all over…
how about walker/odonnell/scott (2 billion dollar medicare scam)….
    guy in west Virginia…..
    don’t be stupid….being a rep is costly…you get what $170k a year…need 2
living spaces…in district and in dc…some live in their office….
    they’re all taking from us……
valentine says “I’ve never heard of a rep allowing his reputation to be
tarnished like this?” this comes from a musician? do you not read the paper…

    • chuck says:

Harley, were you in the FBI before or after you wrestled for the WWE?

      What a life.

You are the man that matches those mountains, living, literally, the great American novel.

      • hot harley says:

      • paulwilsonkc says:

I dont know of any reps “living” in their offices. Could we get an example or two, for my own, personal edification?

        • Stomper says:

Wow, went online to check. It is not a short list.

        • Hot Rod says:

My brother-in-law Rep. Lee Terry NE(2) has slept in his office on an inflatable mattress since 12-01. Showers at the House Gym.

        • hot harley says:

          AGAIN…I HAVE TO SCHOOL A FOOL….
said. Those dozens and dozens and dozens and dozens of U.S. senators and representatives are trying to stretch their paychecks further. Rank-and-file members are being paid $169,300 this year and are scheduled to receive a cost-of-living increase in their paychecks next year. They receive no housing allowances and are responsible for making their own living arrangements in a city where rents are notoriously high.Other right-wingers who sleep in their offices include Pete Hoekstra (R-MI), Denny Rehberg (R-MT), Lee Terry (R-NE) and John Sullivan (R-OK) but Tim Walberg (R-MI), who used his office as a dorm and lost his seat, told reporters last year that, “based on what he saw in the health club each morning, as many as 40 other congressmen sleep in their offices. Members and their office staffers aren’t so keen on giving out names, and no offices would confess to knowing who or how many are asleep near their desks.”Chaffetz paid $44.89 for his new cot, which he bought in a local grocery store. He brought it to Washington wrapped in a garbage bag. they have to have a residence in their district and in
dc to live. Its been going on for years…they can’t
          afford 2 houses plus a family….especially when
housing in dc is so expensive.
So they sleep in their offices…use the house
          gyms….they even get makeshift closets…..
its not new….they get 170k and to keep 2 houses…
pay kids college like flake from Arizona….have
to pay expenses not covered by government…
I’d say theres dozens of us reps…maybe even
senators living literaly in their offices on cots/
          air beds etc.
          SO WILSON….YOU’RE PROVEN WRONG AGAIN…
          PLEASE STOP DOUBTING HARLEY….THIS
IS GETTING OLD ME HAVING TO EDUCATE YOU
          ON THE REAL WORLD…….
          PLEASE PLEASE STOP…….

      • hot harley says:

        • In Spain says:

Harley was also a fixture for many years at our yearly festival, “The Running Of The BULLsh*t”.

          • hot harley says:

            hey in spain…Harley was also
rightagain. When Wilson tried AGAIN to
doubrt th3e “wizard” he was taken down
like rufus r jones took down bob geigel.
If you have something intelligent to say..
            say it….otherwise you’re just another

            anything.

            Harley wins again!!!!!!

  9. CG says:

Guess you have to give the man credit for not raising money from others to pay his bills. I”m sure he could have found a legal way to do that. So he accepted his fate. Not a bad thing.

  10. peculiar guy says:

Haven’t you heard? He wants to be the second coming of Jesse Jackson! Rev.??

  11. Jack Springer says:

I’m guessing his garnishment is $15/month.
