Sounds Good: Split Lip @ Granada, Sandbar Block Party @ 8th and New Hampshire

OK, so I’m a little biased…

I’m a Lawrencian, or an LFKer, or whatever (Sandrat?) — I live in Lawrence.

And yes, I’m more indoctrinated than recent transplant HCJ, who sees KU Basketball more as a cult than a pastime (which is blasphemy).  I mean, I have a degree from KU – I have family in Lawrence – you get the picture.

What I’m saying is that this is a great weekend to take the little jaunt down K 10 or I-70 and spend a little QT on Mass.  Much like Libertarianism, it only feels dirty the first time….

Split Lip Rayfield and many more at the Granada in Lawrence

Featuring not only Kansas’ most revered speed-grass band, but also The Midday Ramblers, MAW, Drakar Sauna, Prairie Acre, the Sunflower Colonels, and others, this deal is a benefit that starts at 7:00.  The cause?  Lawrence local luthier and musician Leo Posch was recently involved in a bad bike crash that ended with him being Life Flighted to Topeka.  I understand that he’s still in intensive care, and obviously is racking up some serious medical bills.  So not only do you get to feel good about helping someone in need out, but you also get to boogie your ass off to A Little More Cocaine Please and Used to Call Me Baby.  Win-win.

The Sandbar Block Party in Lawrence

If you’ve never been inside the quaint and tropical enclaves of the Sandbar, then you’ve never experienced an indoor hurricane, never dumped shark’s blood into your fruity drink, never danced on the bar dressed as a mermaid, and never watched Bill Self down margaritas while affably posing for pictures with just about every lady in the joint.  What I’m saying is, now’s your chance.

This year the party in the street features music from local heroes Cowboy Indian Bear, followed by a performance from the Fabulous Thunderbirds.  Yes, those Fabulous Thunderbirds.  Weirdest pairing ever?  Perhaps.  You Tuff Enuff?

Hey, Matt, thanks for the tip on the Block Party as I’d like to see the T-Birds, but I’m a bit confused on the details. Sandbar website says the concert is free and open to all ages, but it also says something about needing to buy tickets for beer garden or VIP area. Been to the Sandbar several times, but have never attended the outside block party. Am I right to assume that me and my kids can see the show for free sans outside beer/alcohol consumption?

My understanding is that the event is all ages and free, but you pay for tickets to get into the roped-off beer garden and VIP area. I have a call out to the Sandbar people and will update when I hear back.

The Sandbar got back and confirmed that it is free for all ages to attend, but you need to buy a ticket to get into the beer garden. Have fun!

    Thanks, Matt! Appreciate the info.

Great event, Matt, thanks for pimping it, wouldn’t have even known about it otherwise. The Fab T-Birds, well Kim Wilson really, were on fire that night. Great setlist with a lot of the T-Birds pre-MTV stuff and unlike with their latest album from this current lineup, Kim really took the lead on his harp that night. Have seen them maybe a dozen or so times now, with about half of those shows with the classic lineup and the other half after Jimmie’s departure and as far as the post-Vaughn shows go, this was second only to one I saw with Kid Ramos at the KC Blues & Jazz Fest 15 to 20 years ago. Kudos to The Sandbar, although don’t tell them I snuck into the beer garden.
