Hearne: Life After Kanrocksas — Imagine Dragons June 28th @ Starlight

imagine-dragons-hrh-542-x-480Six down, sixty some to go…

The reapportioning of the rock festival formerly known as Kanrocksas continues. This time out Live Nation will present headliners Imagine Dragons, Capital Cities, twentyonepilots, Family of the Year and Churchill at Starlight on Friday June 28th.

Crossroads KC already snagged Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros late last week to headline on Saturday June 29th, on what would have been Kanrocksas second and final day.

Make no mistake, the Dragons bill at Starlight – a mini fest in its own right – is coup for both the theater and Kansas City music fans.

Still hanging fire however: The more than 60 acts Kanrocksas had booked before it flamed out last week.

Possible wildcard venues that could pick up some of those acts include the Uptown, Midland, Crossroads, Harrah’s and Sandstone.

Then again…

“The trouble with that is, you pick up a bunch of those bands and put em in five different venues at the same time and everybody loses,” says one concert insider.

So let’s take a fun look at the likely suspects from the slagheap that was Kanrocksas.

mgmt-2013Friday June 28th:

Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Fun., Avett Brothers, She & Him and Grouplove.

Saturday June 29th:

MGMT, Tiesto, Passion Pit, Kendrick Lamar, Polyphonic Spree and Camera Obscura

MGMT and Fun. were penciled in earlier as headliners at the Crossroads before Kanrocksas swooped in. So there’s that.

fun+PNGFun. has a date in Milwaukee June 27th and nothing else showing until July 6th, so anything’s possible there if the band wants a KC play date.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs are in Milwaukee June 26th and Chicago June 29th, so that Friday or Saturday in between could work at either the Uptown or Midland, but seems unlikely.

MGMT is touring on a new album and probably wants a KC date. Their last listed concert before the cancelled Kanrocksas gig is June 23rd in Dover, Delaware. But hold it right there.

crystal-ball-615x492If any of these bands want to play KC, they don’t have to do it June 28th or 29th. Now that Kanrocksas is dead, they could route it back through here at a later date.

It’s all a little confusing, but that’s roughly how things are looking gazing into the murky future at this point in time.

Stay tuned.
