Glazer: Woodside Health & Tennis Embarks on Mega Club & Pool Redo

Finally, after all the talk, an insane upgrade of Woodside Health & Tennis swimming pools, bars and fun has begun…

The cranes are tearing up the old and construction crews will put in the new, upwards of a $2 million poolside luxury upgrade. It will make what was already one of Kansas City’s landmark clubs and upscale hangs No. 1 not only here but in the Midwest.

“We will be much more selective of new members,” says owner Blair Tanner. “We are looking for that boutique hotel type crowd today. The former idea of as many guests allowed as wanted will be over.”

Over the past five years Woodside allowed members to bring large numbers of guests to tan, swim, and enjoy their favorite beverage poolside on weekends. The membership soared. But now Tanner wants a more quality crowd to attend his new, soon-to-be talk of the town layout.

“We’re spending several million dollars not just to make this entertainment pool area unique – with new everything, including a larger much more attractive bar, outdoor TV’s and expensive lounge area’s – we ‘re improving the inside. We remodeled the workout and bar areas a couple years ago, but I decided to go all out now with everything Woodside.”

In recent years Woodside’s become a Who’s Who destination for Kansas City’s young ,upwardly mobile. It’s attracted membership and guests from Chiefs players, executives and cheerleaders to national celebrities.

Blair doesn’t mind the eye candy but wants to establish the adult family side of the outdoor extravaganza as well. They’re in two separate but visible to each other areas.

“It’s not just a singles or young couples playground,” Tanner says. “We want the cream of the crop in all age groups to join.”

Tanner’s veteran staff includes David Freeland, Chris Bell and the very attractive Katie Mclean. The staff makes sure members and guests follow the rules.

The multimillion dollar upgrade will keep Woodside as THE place to be for the people on the move in KC. Some have compared it to the Power and Light’s three year old Jones pool area. But while both are packed on weekends, Woodside boasts four pools to the Jones one and is far largers larger in both size and scope.

Blair’s father, Don Tanner, passed away several weeks back.

Don was more than a man about town, he not only built Woodside with the Freelands, but owned Brookridge Country Club and a massive amount of property around the city. Don moved to LA a couple decades ago.

When everything is completed this Spring, Tanner will begin to focus on the planned huge new apartment and shopping complex on Woodside’s property.

It will change the face of Westwood.

For now if you don’t belong to Woodside and want to get a look at this West Coast style garden of beauty, you’d better call someone who can get you in. Memberships may be hard to come by when this baby opens this summer.

Does this mean they won’t allow you in to creep out the young nubiles anymore? 😉

Not at all, ‘eye candy’ is always a good thing. I also bring my male pals that include people like Pauly Shore, Dave Coulier and Michael Winslow so on…not just babe of the week…

If you’re bringing guys like that you must have already forgotten about Blair’s quote, “We are looking for that boutique hotel type crowd today. The former idea of as many guests allowed as wanted will be over.”

If everyone while outside this evening hears giggling and laughter coming from some place it will be from all the members of Kansas City Country Club, Carriage Club and Indian Hills Country Club all laughing their butts off at this story.

    • Craig Glazer says:

Not really this is a different type of club. Those are old school, this is todays happening place, less dough yet more for your money….makes a ton more sense.

  6. Rick Nichols says:

This Tanner guy would’ve fit right in with Star founder William Rockhill Nelson, who was eager to surround himself with “30,000 of the best sort of people.” In short, riff-raff need not apply for membership, right?
