OTC: Mizzou Gets Whitewashed By Painter & Twitter

“I’ve got sources telling me they’re not 100% sure, they’re 110% sure!”
Eric Blumberg, sports anchor/reporter for Columbia’s KOMU, while talking to Nick Wright about 2:15 PM Wednesday, on how positive he was that Purdue’s Matt Painter had accepted the Missouri basketball coaching job, Twitter
GH: Blumberg was one of the first respectable voices in the media to make it known via Twitter that Painter was coming to Mizzou. I was at Sporting Kansas City’s stadium tour when I saw his tweet and mentioned to the people there it looked to be a done deal. When I heard Blumberg on Nick Wright’s show make his 110% guarantee, I could not believe what happened next. Read on.

“Eric Blumberg came on the show at 2:15 and quite frankly got it dead wrong.”
Nick Wright, after learning that in fact Painter was staying at Purdue, 610 AM
GH: Blumberg came back on Wright’s show about 4:45 PM and admitted his error, as he had done on Twitter. I don’t know what Blumberg’s nickname was prior to this but he will wear “110% Blumberg” for quite some time.

Mizzou email I’ve seen: ‘Congratulations to Mike Alden and the Tigers for luring Matt Painter to be our new basketball coach!’…  Source says 100% it’s going to happen. Painter meets w PU players tonight. Mizzou will announce Painter as its basketball coach. Went with a source I trusted…”
Eric Blumberg, Twitter
GH: 110% Blumberg attempted to explain his erroneous report with this tweet. Was it enough to report 110% that Painter was coming? Obviously it was not.

“Painter staying at Purdue. I apologize to anyone who feels misled. I reporter what a source told me. Again, I apologize. To err is human. Hopefully a few will forgive.”
Eric Blumberg, Twitter
GH: Blumberg is not some guy firing out tweets in his underwear from his mom’s basement. (Why do we always place bloggers in their underwear in their mom’s basement?) He’s a legit TV guy smack-dab in Columbia with solid Mizzou sources. He screwed up and got this one wrong – way wrong. But he was not alone. Read on.

“If my information on Painter was wrong, then all I can do is wear it. Any or all criticism of me is justified.”
Bernie Miklasz, columnist St. Louis Post Dispatch, Twitter
GH: When I read Miklasz’s post on the St. Louis Post Dispatch website that Alden had received a phone call from Painter confirming his acceptance of the Mizzou job, I considered the information rock solid. Miklasz has been at the SPD since 1989. He’s JoPo with an attitude. News guys don’t come more credible than Bernie. But he too got the story incorrect. As Blumberg did, Miklasz was a pro about it and admitted his mistake publicly. You have to respect that, despite the rollercoaster these bogus reports had us all riding Wednesday.

“ Full props to my friend Bernie @miklasz ; we’ve all been burned, and he’s showing how to handle it. Classy.”
Mike Vaccaro, former KC Star columnist, Twitter
GH: Miklasz went back on Twitter before going to bed to once again lay himself out there and ask forgiveness. Read on.

“Before calling it a day, I wanted to thank everyone for their kind words of support, including regular readers, twitter followers, old friends, new friends, Mizzou fans, Purdue fans and my media colleagues around the nation. And the critics, too. Appreciate you. One more thing: I’m thankful for Opening Day. As for the next Mizzou hoops coach, well, I’m the last guy you should be asking. ;)”
Bernie Miklasz, Twitter
GH: Everybody screws up and Mizzou fans will eventually push this bad memory back to wear Tyus Edney lives. But it will be some time before Blumberg and Miklasz are completely forgiven for this one, though. This one was big. This one will leave a mark.

“I’m done! I’m done with all this social media! This stuff is exploding! It’s everywhere! With all this Internet stuff out there now, people make up what they want to make up! And we get burned. We do get burned! From now on, man, I’m telling you – this was it for me!”
Jack Harry, 810 AM
GH: Jack wants to blame social media for this comedy of errors that resulted in some respected journalists looking like fools. Why? Twitter and the Internet are not at fault here. They are simply today’s tools of communication. Yesterday it was television. Before that radio. Before that newspapers. Tomorrow it might be the “cloud.” The rules of good journalism do not change because technology changes. Just because Bernie and 110% Blumberg can type and hit SEND, doesn’t mean they should without checking their story. They obviously should have done more work than they did. The guilty party here is the person not the present form of technology.

“Before I ever go on the air again I will clear it with that person that I’m gonna use your name. What you just told me, I’m a reporter and I’m gonna use your name. I’m gonna mention your name. … I’m so confused over the whole thing! You have to change now, Kevin! I’ve never seen anything like this!””
Jack Harry, talking with Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
GH: Doesn’t sound like Jack is going to be cultivating any breaking news with that attitude. Getting a story from an unnamed source is fine – you just have to treat it as such. When Blumberg tells us it is 110% sure, that is just wrong. Use restraint in reporting your stories and you won’t have to look like a fool.

“I used to be pretty good at breaking stories. I don’t even want to try anymore. I don’t even want to try!”
Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
GH: Wrong attitude. Kietzman was burned last summer by his Mizzou to the Big 10 report. His problem was in how he presented it. He made the move sound like a done deal and then gloated over his scoop. When it was proved to be false, he pointed his finger at his still unnamed source and cried foul. Wrong. The source can only tell you what he/she knows. It is up to the reporter to determine the value of the information and how it is presented. Again, don’t blame Twitter, blame the twit.

“I said this last week, but IMO anonymous sources are not good for journalism. Too many good reporters/friends get burned by bad info.”
Chad Moller, MU’s Assistant AD, Twitter
GH: Anonymous sources have been around since Ben Franklin wrote under the name Silence Dogood. Again, it’s not the unnamed source who is the bad guy here. Information is good. It’s the reporter’s job to find out how good.

“They got played. My viewpoint on this is fairly simple. Missouri is the most naïve athletic department in the United States. They got played by Jim Delaney in the whole Big 10 thing. They got played by Mike Anderson. They got played by Matt Painter. I don’t know how you could look at it any other way. Three big whiffs on three important moments in the Missouri Athletic Department that their people thought was going to go one way and they leaked it to the Missouri media. It’s a disaster.”
Dan Wolken, of TheDaily.com, when asked by Nick Wright the national perception of what Matt Painter did to Mike Alden, 610 AM
GH: Wolken filleted Alden and the MU athletic department like no one else I heard on radio. It was a message that Mizzou needs to hear and make adjustments to their actions.

“I don’t mean to gloat, but I called this on Monday. You’re A.D. is a mark! How many people have to flat out play Mike Alden before somebody says, ‘Hey, maybe we’ve got some issues here.’ To me this felt like a leverage play the whole time.”
Nick Wright, on his prediction Painter would not leave Purdue, 610 AM

“Disagree with notion MIZ got played. A- Painter wouldn’t do that. B- Alden went for a big fish, and went hard.”
Dave Matter, of Columbia Tribune, Twitter

“I’m sick of reporters. I’m sick of sources. I’m sick of the whole thing…”
Kurtis Seaboldt, Twitter

“I absolutely feel horrible for the Missouri fans. The last ten days, as a sports fan…we all take it very, very seriously. We are all intensely wild and proud fans. I couldn’t feel worse for the Missouri fans. The exhuberant feeling they must have been feeling the last couple of hours until the last 40 minutes, must just be shocking and horrifying. I am so, so sorry for the Missouri fans in our audience.”
Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
GH: Somehow, I didn’t believe KK. It must be the reporter in me.

“That stuff happens to a lot of places. It probably feels like it happens to Missouri more because we’re here and we see it but that happens to a lot of places.”
Sam Mellinger, assuring Nick Wright Mizzou is not as snake bit as it seems, 610 AM
GH: I have to disagree with Sam. This kind of gut-churning stuff happens way more to Mizzou than just about anywhere or anyone not named Job.

  2. Gavin says:

    Mizzou Got played
This reminds me of the time Kansas City got used like a dishrag whore by the Pittsburgh Penguins. The thing is, if you want to catch the big fish, you have to put up with the possibility that you’re being played. Kansas City didn’t have to stick its neck out to try and lure then Penguins but if they hadn’t, the possibility of getting the team to move here would have gone from “really small” to non-existent.

While it seems obvious in retrospect that Alden got played and I can see why it’s a bit embarrassing for Mizzou fans, they should at least be glad Alden is swinging for the fences. He could have made a safe hire, like Iowa State did with Greg McDermott a few years ago (not that ISU is even close to being as good a job as Mizzou, but you see my point), but would that have really thrilled a starving fan base? It sucks for Mizzou that they got embarrassed like they did, but hwo many of them would be bitching right now if Mizzou hired Greg Marshall out of Wichita State for not being sexy enough? In the end, Alden may end up going with a guy like Marshall anyway, and that hire may turn out to be good, but if I’m a Mizzou fan, i’d at least be heartened that Alden was trying his damndest to get a hot name and not elevate a mid-major coach who is successful by mid-major standards.

Hopefully, for MU’s sake this will get them to shut up. It seemed like this search was leakier than a stone basement and Alden needs to get control over the informational flow. He might have an easier time in Houston this week where lots of coaches are meeting with lots of Ads about lots iof different things. Hiding in plain sight might be just the thing.

  3. Mark says:

    Irony
My goodness, Greg. Blumberg is NOT a reporter at the Columbia Tribune. Could you have taken 15 seconds of google time to verify that? “Legit newspaper guy”? I know you’re “just” blogging but damn, come’on.

  4. dp says:

    Sources say…..
That if you can’t name your source, I’m not going to believe it. At least for all the local hacks in KC and StL. Sorry but Bernie and Blumberg are hacks, plain and simple. The same way I view Mitch Album as a hack for the BS story he fudged at the final four a few years back. You don’t get to make your own facts. Everybody wants to call themselves journalists and be the first to get the story. Go read or watch All the President’s Men. Those guys were journalists. It’s not a fact unless you can get two, independent sources to verify. Or you have Matt Painter on the record which those dopes didn’t have. That’s what you are taught in J School. Stick to that and you might not always be the first to break a story, but people will believe what you write. If you are in the news business and you have no cred (KK, Blumberg and Miklasz) you aren’t going to be taken seriously.

  5. JayBee says:

    Jack Harry, cranky old turd…
    Jack Harry is a DOUCHE.

…and who feels bad for Mizzou fan? Aren’t the a “football school” anyway? Jesus, for the last three months that is all I have heard from Tiger fan when they could not win on the road, half assed the Big 12 Tournament and dodged out early in the National Tourney…according to Tiger Fan they don’t give a shit about hoop – FOOTBALL SCHOOL.

Actually…wish my alma mater’s footbal team was as half as good as MU’s, but anywho…

Jack Harry is a crusty old turd…I have flip-flops taller than that loud mouthed Tiger Homer. He hates social media? Bet he hated color TV when it came out too, or PAPER when it replaced stone tablets. STFU Jack Harry…

    Oh snap…Royals play today….

  6. Greg Hall says:

Thanks for the fix, Mark. My friends at the Columbia Tribune gently informed me that Blumberg is a television anchor/reporter at KOMU in Columbia. Got it corrected in the above copy.

  7. MoCrash says:

    Everybody must get played
Okay, so being “played” is the theme du jour. Maybe my connation of that term is different, but I can’t see how Alden “got played.” Anderson wanted to go to Arkansas, Arkansas made an offer, Missouri countered, but this didn’t become a bidding war since Arkansas stuck with its original deal. Since by most metrics — including money, facilities, market size and conference ranking — Missouri ranks higher than Arkansas, Anderson left because he personally preferred Arkansas. Alden wasn’t played by anybody.

Painter’s case was ultimately similar; he wanted to be at Purdue, providing conditions improved. Alden went after Painter — not the other way around — and made his pitch, but Purdue sweetened things enough for Painter to stay. Missouri fans should want their school’s AD to be aggressive in pursuit of the highest quality coach possible; doing so and failing is not being played.

As for Miklasz and Blumberg, they may have gotten played. That depends on what motivated their sources. What is more likely is that neither did enough to confirm what they were being told by their sources — and using the plural is probably inaccurate; usually when stories blow up this big, as KK’s did on Mizzou to the Big 10 last summer, it’s a case of a lone source to which the reporter in haste assumes to be more knowledgable than warranted. I don’t want to be overly harsh towards Miklasz or Blumberg; I’ve observed the work of both over many years, especially Bernie’s, and they are generally solid and reliable. They both took credibility hits, of which they are obviously aware, and I’m sure will work towards repairing the damage by the body of their work. I doubt either will soon project substantial certainly over stories which leave substantial room for doubt.

It’s difficult for journalists of a previous generation to come to grips with the dynamics of new media, less so for those whose background is broadcast — where near-immediacy is the norm. Part of reporting has always been its competitive nature, even if “The Front Page” archetype is overstated. That rapid pace offers little time for verification and reflection, which are fundamental journalistic values. Which is why social media should be viewed circumspectly; beyond the truth that one cannot be as sure of the authenticity of its source as with a phone call or face-to-face, there’s also little consequence to complete fabrication. Jack Harry has it wrong: the solution is not to spurn new and social media, but for the reporter to apply rigid standards regarding its use — in both Send and Receive modes.

  8. jjskck says:

I wouldn’t say Mizzou got embarrassed. They identified their candidate, made their best pitch, and he stayed at his alma mater after they upped the ante. There’s no shame in that.

They aren’t the ones who reported that Painter was a done deal. Those folks are the ones who should be embarrassed.

  9. Cliffy says:

I, too, don’t see what Mizzou fans have to be embarrassed about. Painter actually reached out to Mizzou first from what I understand and who can blame Alden for going after the big fish. He made a great offer and it didn’t work. Sucks, but hey …

The MU athletic department contacted Bernie immediately after he issued info from his unfortunate sources and told him it was false. He insisted on continuing with it anyway. I like Bernie’s work but he fucked up big time. Blumberg? Well … young, tv, you know ….

Fuck it. I’m going to the Royals game.

  10. Cliffy says:

Oh … and by the way … somebody who deserves some major praise is Gabe Dearmond. I spent quite of bit of time on his site yesterday afternoon and he showed tremendous restraint in waiting for confirmation before reporting. It’s a disappearing trait in the news biz these days.

  11. P says:

    Misery
kicked square in the groin again…imagine that.

  12. Laughing says:

Look in the mirror mu morons, you need to grasp that mu is the worst school in the country and no quality / respectable coach will coach there. We now know the defintion of shameless,

Shameless(clueless) is defined as the mouthy mu fans who just cant grasp that the whole country is laughing at them. They got played by NU and the Big 10, they got played by their coach and arKANSAS , now they got played again by Purdure and Painter, and all the the mu dufuses can say is “don’t see what Mizzou fans have to be embarrassed about”.

That is the defintion of shameless (clueless) mu morons are so stupid they dont even see that there is problem. KU only pays Bill Self $3,000,000 and you idiots offer this guy $2,300,000 … and he say no?…… omg, that is so sad (really so funny)

I suppose this explains how mu morons keep on rattling and talking shit when they have NEVER done a thing….except.. throw cotton balls on black students, name arenas for cheating college girls etc etc….. How pathetic. How funny.

  13. harley says:

    F*CK YOU ALL…MIZZOU DIDN’T GET PLAYED!
MU went with a top coach…and just like in life you don’t always get the hottest girl (unless you’re
glazer looking for a one night stand) or the best available coach in the nation.
They didn’t get played. They made an offer just like any other business in the country makes
offers and it got turned down. Happens every day.
But the fools who believe the shit the liars and wanabees on the internet say and post
    is pure crap.
READ MY POST. I PRESENT IINTELLIGENT ARGUMENTS ABOUT EACH SITUATION KNOWING
THAT REALITY WILL SET IN AND THERE’S SOMETIMES DISAPPOINTMENT.
DESPITE WHAT THE NON EXPERTS SAY…MU BASKETBALL IS NOT A DESTINATION
COACHING JOB. KU/N.C./DUKE/ ARE. FEW JOBS ARE FINAL STOPS FOR ANY COACH.
    SEE CALIPARI.
So what does MU do now? Get real and understand that they can still be a viable bball program
even with a coach who has other loftier jobs in mind. But you have to take the handcuffs off
the coach and let him recruit his kids. MU wouldnt do that with Anderson and he left
MU wants squeeky clean program…and that means dealing with any of the top flight recruits
in the nation because they come with baggage.
HERES WHAT MU SHOULD DO NOW.
Reach into the pool of former NBA coaches with great track records. Start with Larry
Brown…and realize they offer a high school bball star the coaching to play in the nba
some day. You don’t need current college coach…..hey…maybe LARRY DREW…
I’LL FIND MORE….BUT THEY NOT ONLY OFFER A PROSPECTIVE PRO PLAYER
THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY NBA BALL BUT THEY GET PREPARED
FOR THE NBA STYLE OF PLAY.
Its the best way to go…and they’ll love columbia. and they won’t always be searching for that
next step up ….theres at least 10-15 coaches you could go after and with the pay structure
get them to come to mu.
Otherwise you shop around every 5 years for a new coach. I will report on prospective
coaches that fit this mold. It would make mu a powerhouse!
I’VE BEEN RIGHT ALL THIS SEASON….READ MY POSTS…THEY OFFER THE
    INSIGHT NO OTHER REPORTER/”EXPERT” SEES.
I WAS RIGHT BEFORE…I ‘M GOING TO BE RIGHT HERE.
IF ALDEN FOLLOWS MY ADVICE…THE BBALL WORLD IS TURNED UPSIDE DOWN
    IN COLUMBIA…………..

    see ya in november thugs!

  18. Tony says:

    Hey Harley
You’re a football school? Didn’t you losers get rolled in your last two bowl games to nobody schools? Kansas choked in the elite 8 this year, but at least they made it to the top 8. That would be like you making a BCS bowl game, which has never happened. Nor have you ever won the big 12. Get over it. You are neither a football nor a basketball school.

  19. The Real Cash says:

    The Real Cash cow
    Harley,

You need to read something beside the large print Readers Digest. The most Money that the NCAA brings in is from what sport? Look at the Billions of dollars Basketball contract and then tell me what the real money sport is.

    IDIOT

  20. BIG TIME says:

    #1 vs #2 = KU in the N.C. game 1/2 the ttime
If NCAA basketball was played like NCAA football, how many National Championship games would KU have played in the last 20 years, you know?….. #1 plays #2 for the title…… It would be fine by me……actually that is not true…. I like the tourny…… I LOVE IT…… NCAA FOOTBALL should have a 4 week tourny….

    ps
mu sucks ass in football too, heck, I think we all agree that mu pretty sucks at everything, tmu is pretty much the ass end of the world…… spitting out turds like harley.

  22. JP says:

    Missouri’s place in the world
If there is a banana peel on the floor, you can bet Missouri will walk on it and slip on it every time. I remember all the gloating from KU’s loss, and once again KARMA rears it’s head and Missouri leaves with egg on it’s face. It is so predictable.

One sidenote, Greg you missed Petro’s show when they were all celebrating Painter coming to Missouri. They acted like it was a done deal and Painter would be able to get McLemore to come to Missouri instead of Kansas (as he’s been projected as signing with). Today, they were all humble, talking about how good of a job Missouri is. Petro when questioned, stated that the Painter hiring was based on reports. I didn’t recall hearing that on Wednesday. If 810 didn’t learn their lesson from KK’s Missouri to the Big Ten story, they are NEVER going to learn it.

  23. Rainbow Man says:

    Teflon Alden Strikes Again
I am an idiot from KCK and I knew Anderson was gone two months ago and I also knew there was NO WAY Painter was leaving the Boilers wihtout sparking the biggest controversey in Indiana since Knight was fired. Here is how AD Rainbow Man would have handled it….
“Yeah screw you Anderson. I know you are playing me and I do not believe a word you are saying. Let’s agree that you are done after your last game. I am shopping. You are done.

“Cuonzo… Anderson is gone at the end of the year. I will pay you more than anyone else and you get to stay in Missouri. We need a guy from in-state right now. The Big 12 is a basketball conference. The SEC is not. You are our man. If your value goes up in the next three weeks… I will pay you more. But I need your commitment now. This is between us.

  24. KU RULEZ THE BIG 12 says:

    fizzou gets played ….. again
All of the jrBig 12 schools, like mu, should bow down and lick the shoes of all grads of KU. Heck if a person just says they like KU then every mu fan should lick the dust off off their shoes. EVERY year the little mu fuckheads state for a fact (mighty predictors like the loser harley and dumbman) that KU cant do it again, but GUESS WHAT?????

OOPS KU DID IT AGAIN. 7 BIG12 TITLES…. SEVEN IN A ROW ……..

BOW DOWN TO THE MIGHTY KU ALL OF YOU mu SWINE, YOU ARE LOWER THAN WORMS IN THE DIRT, WHILE MU IS THE WORST SHITHOLE ANYWHERE, EVER, IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE…….. EVEN GOD HATES mu….. mu is the butt of all jokes…. mu is the worst… is is so pathetic…. PAIGE AREAN….. BWWAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHHA PAIGE WHAT???

  25. Killer says:

peace between KU AND MU fans
It is time for KU AND KU fans to stop the harsh words and come together in peace and harmony. After all, arent we all from the same area and shouldnt we ……… check the date.

  26. John says:

    I was right.
Greg, did you hear the rumor that Kim Anderson from UCM is being consiterd for the MU job? I was right, I knew MU wouldn’t get a big name.

    From March 24.

“MU basketball fans remind me of K-State football fans. They think their program is bigger then what it is.

When K-State hired Ron Prince many of my Wildcat friends thought why did they hire a no-name coordinator? What they failed to realize is that Prince was the seventh choice for K-State, no one else wanted the job. In fact if Snyder didn’t un-retire after Prince was fired the Wildcats would more then likely go the 1-AA route for a coach.

I say this because MU basketball fans are kidding themselves if they think they’re going to get a big name. Brad Stevens isn’t coming. All reports show that if he was to leave Butler it’s more then likely to Indiana or another Big 10 school.

Dave Rose from BYU, not coming.
    The Richmond HC…maybe.

My guess is that when it’s all said in done the next head coach of the Missouri Tigers will be Central Missouri’s Kim Anderson. I know that’s not what people want to hear but that’s just my guess.”

I think MU fans think the basketball program is bigger then it really is. If Anderson gets hired, that proves it.

    I
