Starstruck: Mellinger Shines but Sports Daily Still Lacking Teeth

New columnist Sam Mellinger is taking Sports Daily to new heights in terms of column writing. But the section remains largely toothless when it comes to coverage of local teams and sports news.

Yeah, they get the obvious stories like KU athletics director Lew Perkins fall from grace and the KU ticket ripoff. But aside from that the section sets forth a largely unquestioning approach to teams and managements not mired in obvious scandal or disarray.

For example, yesterday’s massive headline: "The Royals REINVIGORATED."

Please…

Or today’s "news story" claiming unattributed that KU basketball coach Bill Self’s repeated meltdowns in the NCAA tournament say "more about the program he coaches than the coach himself."

Really?

Not being able to get Self’s highly favored, superior-talented teams ready to beat a bunch of nobodies when everything’s on the line says nothing about the coach?

There is one breath of reality in today’s Star sports section – if only by accident.

For all the Star‘s cheerleading about the lowly Royals, Rustin Dodd’s column about the "Ten Games Worth Seeing At Kauffman," kinda puts the season in perspective. Because out of an 80 or so game home season, Dodd could only come up with 10 that "may be worth a trip to Kauffman Stadium."

The operative words being, "may be worth"…

    Mellinger shines?
Hardly, Mellinger is JoPo light. He’s another safe, boring white guy who will have a long career in this city without ruffiling any feathers or making anyone think. He’s a mix between JoPo and Johnathan Rand.

I haven’t finished one column he’s wrote without falling asleep.

    Now Hear This
We have shitty professional sports teams owned by rich white guys that have zero, nada, zip passion for winning. All they give a fuck about is money. We have one college athletic program, KU basketball, that has any relevance on a consistent basis. Everything else is mediocre shit.

That’s all that needs to be said. I’m Huey Lewis and you just heard the news.

Let me get this straight; you stayed awake for Joe but find yourself nodding off to Sam. Too brainy?

    Kansas Jayhawks: 2008 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS.
I’m pretty sure KU had to beat some teams that year to be given the trophy – something Roy Williams never accomplished.

They’re Looking for Another Sports Columnist
How did you miss that The Star is looking for another sports columnist? That revelation would have fit right into this post. See this week-old listing on CareerBuilder:

(Or if that link doesn’t work, search CareerBuilder for “Sports” in “Kansas City, MO”).

    Bitter Hearne
The APSE has a different take about the Star’s sports page with several Star sports page writers (Babb, Mellinger, Kerkhoff, McCollough) rated in the top 5 or honorable mention for various 2010 Sports Journalism awards. Your complaining is sour grapes.
