OTC: Kansas Rolls Into Alamo Looking Like Santa Anna

(L-R) Marcus Morris #22 and Markieff Morris #21 of the Kansas Jayhawks walk towards the bench against the Northern Iowa Panthers during the second round of the 2010 NCAA men's basketball tournament at Ford Center on March 20, 2010 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.“The Kansas Jayhawks are in the Final Four in Houston. Just pack your bags and get ready to go.”
Frank Boal, on the number of upsets that have left Kansas a seemingly easy road to Houston, TV 41
GH: Kansas fans may cringe to hear such bold talk but almost everyone expects KU to roll through San Antonio this weekend like they were Santa Anna at the Alamo.

“I think this year’s NIT bracket might be tougher than the road Kansas will face to the Final Four.”
Sean Callahan, of Rivals.com, Twitter

“KU sure seems to play better against ‘name’ teams in the NCAAs which should prolly make KU fans worry a bit heading into this weekend.”
Gary Bedore, of LJW, Twitter

“Ohio St probably has to beat Kentucky, UNC & Duke to get to championship game. Kansas? Richmond, Florida State and Florida. What a difference!”
Dirk Chatelain, writer for Omaha World Herald, Twitter

“Ohio State and Kansas are the best teams, and Kansas is playing the best on both ends of the floor.”
Jay Bilas, on selection Sunday, Twitter
GH: Ohio State has looked better than Kansas through two games but all that matters is to survive and advance. I expect these two teams to square off for the title and if it should happen, they might as well close down Jackson and Johnson Counties on Monday, April 4th. The Kansas Jayhawks basketball team is this city’s third pro franchise. Like it or not (and there are more than a few who do not), this town will be rockin’ from Kearney to Gardner.

“The whole way (the Morris twins) changed the way they play basketball has changed more than anyone I’ve ever seen.”
Greg Gurley, 810 AM
GH: It is almost difficult to remember what a non-factor the skinny Morris twins were when they arrived in Lawrence three seasons ago. It has been said before for a marvelous job Danny Manning does with the KU big men but these two are his crowning achievement. They play with grace, speed and total confidence. The fact that Bill Self got two of these gems from the same bedroom should almost be an NCAA violation.
"The Marcus Twins.”
Marv Albert, opening the second half of the Illinois game, TBS
GH: Does Marv know Dwayne Bowe and The Clarks?
“Only bad crowd moment (in Big 12 tourney at Sprint Center): The pathetic ‘one more year’ chants for juniors who are obviously NBA ready. Reek of desperation.”
Gary Bedore, LJW writer, Twitter
GH: Depending on what NBA draft website you check, most list both Morris brothers as a first-round pick. Interestingly, The LA Times recently projected Marcus and Thomas Robinson going in the first round and Markieff as a second-round pick. Losing all three of those big men would perforate KU’s hopes for an eighth straight Big 12 conference championship.

“Farokhmanesh is doing nothing and #kubball is #winning.”
Bob Fescoe, Twitter
GH: Fescoe is the most annoying Kansas fan I have ever come across…because his IQ appears to be lower than his radio Q. It is tough to fake intelligence.

“(The attendance at Oklahoma’s Lloyd Noble Arena) has been crushed by the (NBA’s) Thunder. I’ll tell you, it would be interesting to see what would happen to Allen Fieldhouse if they put an NBA team here in Kansas City.”
Soren Petro, 810 AM
GH: Here’s what would happen at Allen Fieldhouse if the NBA moved into Sprint (which ain’t gonna happen this decade). They’d sell 16,300 tickets to every Kansas home game until the Jayhawks became mediocre – in other words, Missouri. Kansas City is not an NBA town. It’s an NFL, MLB and college basketball town. It is not a great college football town but it’s catatonic when it comes to the NBA or NHL. 10,000 hardcore NBA fans doesn’t make a successful franchise. And I doubt we have that many with jobs.

“March Madness: In 4 days, I’ve gone from hating the ‘Napa Know How’ commercial to…LOVING it! The customer/patient dude makes it.”
Nate Bukaty, Twitter
GH: Ivan Foley of The Platte County Landmark tweeted that the NAPA guy in the commercial looks like “a young Barry Switzer.” He raps like him as well.
“Only 3 days until the Sweet 16? They should wait 36 days to kill all momentum like the super-awesome BCS.”
SportsPickle, Twitter

“Roy Williams spent 15 years at Kansas. He never did have Jayhawk blood! He really didn’t. The first chance he got he was gone.”
Jack Harry, TV 41
GH: How did Roy leave KU “the first chance he got” and deliver his infamous “I’m stayin’” speech? I thought Roy was an arrogant little shit who thought he needed to be treated like a king. But the guy loved Kansas. He loved his players like no one I’ve ever seen. He loved the tradition at Kansas and he loved the people. He just loved his home and North Carolina more. People sometimes leave home and grow. This would be one boring ass place if we blocked off the metro borders and refused all transplants.
“If (Mike Anderson) is messing around he needs to tell everybody right now!”
Jack Harry, irate that rumors continue to swirl about Mike Anderson leaving Missouri for Arkansas, TV 41
GH: Why in the hell would Mike Anderson do anything but attempt to strike the best professional deal he can for himself and his family? Would Mad Jack call a press conference to declare his allegiance to KSHB if ESPN came courting? It is madness for fans and the media to make crazy demands of a coach who could be fired tomorrow or following his/her next losing season. Get what you can, Mike. You’re the only one who is looking out for your well being.
“If that’s Missouri’s goal, to win a National Championship with Mike Anderson, it ain’t happening. We’ve got enough of a sample here. …And I’m not criticizing Mike Anderson.”
Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
GH: So who is KK criticizing? Gadhafi? Love it when the media adds “and I’m not…” to their lie. Makes it so much more believable.
“If Mizzou had any sense they would let Anderson go to Arkansas and hire Bruce Pearl.”
Bob Fescoe, 610 AM
“Don’t know if Mike Anderson is worth 2mill a year but do know this: he ain’t worth the insanity spreading among panicky MU fans. This Anderson story is making people lose their minds. I could see it if he was Coach K or something. Sheesh.”
Bernie Miklasz, of St. Louis Post Dispatch, Twitter

“To fans, it doesn’t matter if he’s the best, it matters that he is THEIRS.”
Gabe DeArmond, of PowerMizzou.com, Twitter
GH: Interesting take – and very true. We treat coaches like girlfriends. We can’t stand the thought of someone else’s hands all over our squeeze – even the bad ones.
“What do you think of Leslie Visser’s face?”
Steven St. John, on the longtime CBS courtside reporter’s apparent plastic surgery, 810 AM
GH: The name Gollum comes to mind.

“Barkley totally getting under Pitino’s skin. Love it.”
Kevin Kietzman, after Charles told Rick Pitnio that the Big East is overrated and correctly predicted FSU would knock off Notre Dame, Twitter
GH: Barkley is funny. I am not sold that he is as bright as some say but the dude is loose, rude and sportin’ a major ‘tude. He was a bit too easy on Pitino for my taste, adding that while the Big East is overrated they have great coaches. I’m still hoping for some restaurant table comments directed at the Louisville head coach.
“I do like that CBS lets ‘em just talk, we get caught up in doing better TV sometimes, handcuffs honest discussion.”
Doug Gottlieb, Twitter
GH: I thought this was an interesting comment from an ESPN analyst about the freedom CBS/Turner gives their analysts on screen. Gottlieb’s frankness is so much better than all the public coworker backslapping that usually comes from TV guys.
“I understand the economy is bad and I have stolen toilet paper from my job before, but light bulbs? really?”
Bob Fescoe, after arriving at work Monday and discovering someone had stolen light bulbs out of the Entercom building, Twitter
GH: Who knew the radio biz was this bad? Read on.
“I asked for a raise once when I was in college and they did not give it to me. I stole toilet paper to get even. I was satisfied.”
Bob Fescoe, Twitter
GH: Must have been one helluva raise. The next time Fescoe asks for a raise, he’ll take teepeeing his house instead.
“You fu, uh, you fucks… you FOLKS up in the northeast…”
Mike Thompson, Fox 4 meteorologist, via Howard Stern Radio Show on Sirius
GH: I heard this audio clip on Howard Stern’s show as I was driving to Omaha on Saturday. I was startled at first to hear Mike Thompson’s voice during a Stern bumper. But hearing our local weather guy accidently call the folks in the northeast, “You fucks…” had me laughing so hard I missed my exit. Anybody know when this blooper aired on Fox 4?

12 Responses to OTC: Kansas Rolls Into Alamo Looking Like Santa Anna

  1. Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

Bob “KU Fiasco” Fescoe continues to be a total moron
Is he really dumb enough to suggest that Missouri, who in the very recent past had a very ugly run in with the NCAA and spent time on probation for excessive phone calls to recruits, hire Bruce Pearl? The same Bruce Pearl who got Illinois on probation when he was an assistant under Lou Henson? The same Bruce Pearl who lied to the NCAA regarding some recruiting visits and got suspended by the SEC and now FIRED by Tennessee? Yeah, real brilliant Fiasco. Just what Mizzou needs..the NCAA sniffing around again because of an idiot coach. Just STFU Fiasco, and stick to something you know..like masturbating while covered in your own feces.

  2. Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

Correction….Pearl was an asst at Iowa…
and showed the ethics of a pirate when he couldn’t get Deon Thomas.

  3. Gavin says:

    Pearl and stuff
I can’t believe no one is talking about the fact that there is a very real chance that Pearl could be hit with a show cause order, which would make him damn near untouchable by any college program anyway. I will say this, though, for Fescoe: He’s only saying stuff similar to what Jon Sundvold said when Bib Huggins was on the market and MU didn’t make a play for him. Admittedly, Pearl is probably a bit more toxic right now that Huggins was after being fired by Cincinnati, but there’s good reasons to believe that Pearl would have a very short leash, assuming he can get a school tire hire him in the first place. I don’t know if Huggins would have stayed at Mizzou when the West Virginia job came open, but I think he would have been a great hire for Mizzou and I think Pearl is going to make someone a fine coach as well, as long as the NCAA allows him to be hired.

And I can’t believe I’m going to defend Roy Williams, but Jack Harry should shut the fuck up about Roy blowing town the first chance he got. Not only did he have that very famous first opportunity at North Carolina, he also had a practically standing offer from the Lakers and there were lots of other would-be suitors that lined up to try and get Roy interested. I remember once he had a non-productive conversation with Tennessee, interestingly enough.

Also, Greg, I’m not too happy with the comparison of KU to Santa Anna at the Alamo. Yeah, he won but it took a crap ton of Mexican soldiers to do it in San Antonio and the battle proved so costly that Santa Anna eventually lost another, more important and decisive battle somewhere near Houston. I’m sure you can see the parallels here.

  4. Cliffy says:

Fescue’s Farokhmanesh comment reminds of when Nebraskans just couldn’t leave Sal Aunese alone even after he was dead. Makes sense, though, as Fescue would fit right in with our mental giants to the north.

I like Mike Anderson a lot but if Arkansas wants him that badly — let him go. Coaching turnover is rarely a good thing but a bball program can rebuild pretty quickly. I don’t know about Pearl, though, Gavin. A bit too sleazy for me.

Looks like 1988 all over again for kU as the big names keep falling. I’ve got this feeling Roy Boy’s “keeds” are going to get a shot at knocking off the squawks.

  5. Gavin says:

    I get it cliffy
I agree that Pearl is a bit too sleazy right now and you guys would definitely have to absorb some shots about “putting winning above everything” (truth be told, I imagine I’d deliver a few of them myself) but I think whoever hires him is going to get a contract that is VERY friendly to the school and I also think that Pearl is going to behave like a choirboy. Obviously, I could be wrong and he could be just as recalcitrant as Kelvin Sampson, but I think Pearl would be more likely to get MU to the Final Four than Anderson and he’d do it for less money. And it’s not as if we ALL haven’t made ethical compromises to win at sports.

I also agree with you that if Arkansas really wants him that badly, you should just let him go. This guy keeps playing Mizzou for raises and extensions and, no offense, he hasn’t really done all that much yet. Yesterday Clinkscale/Kietzman posed the question of what do you do if next year he gets you a Big XII championship or to the Final Four? You have to give him even more, don’t you?

  6. DonkeyPunch says:

    Pitino
    GH sed:
He was a bit too easy on Pitino for my taste, adding that while the Big East is overrated they have great coaches. I

  7. Cliffy says:

Good point, Gav. But I think this year is somewhat unique in that it’s Arky trying to bring home the prodigal son. Now, if he were to win the B12 or make the FF as you suggest then I would have no problem with others making a run at him. He would deserve it.

  8. Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

    Gavin….
To answer the KK/Clinker question…. No. You don’t HAVE to give him anything more than his contract states.

  9. Gavin says:

    Guy Who says…
I understand that you don’t have to legally give him more than what his contract states but I’m also sure you understand that if Mizzou doesn’t give him more money after he actually accomplishes something, some other school will be glad to do it. You only have to give him more money if you want him to stay.

  10. Merle Tagladucci says:

I’d sure like to know where all these Missouri fans are that want Anderson to stay. They must all be hiding in the same place they go whenever MU plays a home game.

  11. bricem says:

    Marv Albert
Did anyone else find it annoying that Marv can’t say the word “Morris”? I hate watching the KU games and hearing over and over about “Marcus Marris and Markieff Marris”.

  12. Rainbow Man says:

    Canned Salmon
When an AD decides to can a coach… they don’t ask for permission. Coaches know their day will come and have to take paydays when they get em. There may be 5-6 jobs so sweet you can’t walk away… but that is about it.
