OTC: Does KU’s Bill Think His Team is Selfish?

“I don’t know that (Jacob Pullen) kid well but he’s got 38 playing on national TV against a team that doesn’t deserve it but is ranked number one in the country and their arch rivals – and he defers not to shoot the ball to get 40. Class! That kid had it going on tonight. … When everybody else on our team would have gone and hunted their shot.”
Bill Self, in his postgame interview after the loss at K-State, Jayhawk Radio Network
GH: I was stunned by how Bill Self tossed every player on his team under the wheels of the Jayhawk bus that left Manhattan. I don’t know why Self would choose to paint his team as a bunch of selfish individuals who care more about their stats than their team – but that is what he did. Did the KSU loss really transform KU from a team spouting their new “Family Over Everything” slogan to a bunch of me-first jerks? I sure don’t think so but the better question is why does Coach Self?
“I love Self…but they’ve got some turds on that team. Maybe that’s one of the things that’s not allowing them to get past that invisible ceiling the past couple of years. You look at Tyshawn’s issue with the football team, Mario’s issues off the court, the (Morris) twins and their thuggery on the floor, the (Elijah) Johnson dunk and the stupidest T of all time. They’ve got some guys who have to get in line in terms of their character because when you get in the tough battles in March, that does play a part.”
Doug Gottlieb, ESPN college basketball analyst, in an interview with Soren Petro, 810 AM
GH: So we’re back to the Bill Clinton question; does character matter? Gottlieb dismisses Kansas recent good play to playing “a lot of bad teams in the Big 12.” Is Bill Self a lot more unhappy with his 24-2 Jayhawks than it appears? Just when we thought KU was peaking, a blowout loss to rival K-State appears to have opened a lot of old wounds.
“Based on what I saw (Monday) night (at Bramlage), I would have to make Missouri the favorite (over Kansas) in Columbia.”
Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
“I see how it is. When the grass is cut the snakes will show.. F.O.E it’s "us" against the world in my eyes.”
Marcus Morris, Twitter
“I think (Kansas) is good … I think they’re in that group of six or eight teams you could see in the Final Four. But you could also see them losing in that second game very, very easily.”
Doug Gottlieb, 810 AM
“I’m gonna say yeah, I do (think they’ll be back). Depending on who advises Josh Selby and the Morris twins, I think they’re all back (for next season at Kansas).”
Greg Gurley, when asked by Petro if he thinks Josh Selby and the Morris twins will return next season, 810 AM
GH: Gurley added that this could change if Kansas wins the NCAA title this April. This will be interesting to watch. Except for his first two weeks, Selby has shown little of what was expected of the best player Bill Self recruited to Kansas – but that matters little to the NBA. The Morris twins’ propensity for physical play may make them even more attractive to NBA scouts. All three are projected to go in the first round by multiple NBA draft websites.
“Maybe – certainly – this is just me, but at least 10 times during The King’s Speech, I thought: Bill Self was King of England?”
Joe Posnanski, Twitter
“If I could tell you just a speck of what this guy was telling us you would shudder. Never envy Bill Self’s job.”
Kevin Harlan, on what he has heard about college basketball recruiting from an insider, 810 AM
GH: I would like to hear some of K-State’s director of recruiting Dalonte Hill’s recruiting stories. He has got to have some whoppers to earn that $500K salary he gets for sitting next to Martin in almost complete silence.
“I think Kansas State could still make a run to the Elite Eight. They might look back on this and say it was a heck of a year.”
Nate Bukaty, 810 AM
“Kevin, with all due respect I really don’t care what people say or think!”
Frank Martin, in an interview Tuesday with Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
GH: Before I could jot down Martin’s above comment, he refuted it with his next statement. Read on.
“For a team that people say we play bad offense, we sure have had some guys have some special moments. I find that kinda funny.”
Frank Martin, in almost the next breath after stating he doesn’t care what people say or think, 810 AM
GH: Martin is a complicated man who likes to tell us how real he is while hiding his insecurities. He obviously cares a great deal what others say and think about him. He’s a young coach and he’ll eventually learn how do better deal with criticism…or he’ll become Roy Williams. Read on.
“Absolutely not!”
Frank Martin, when asked by Nick Wright if he had reconsidered and thought he was overly emotional in responding with terse, “Ask your source,” responses to legitimate questions last week about Curtis Kelly, 610 AM
GH: Doug Tucker of the Associated Press asked one of the most professional questions I have ever heard in a presser last week when he artfully asked Martin to comment on the reports in two legitimate newspapers about Curtis Kelly. Martin refused to answer the question and repeatedly responded with his now famous, “Ask your source,” reply.
“First of all, Nick, ‘upset’ was never part of my (emotions at last week’s press conference).”
Frank Martin, when Wright asked Martin if his anger and frustration during last week’s presser stemmed from the fact there was no truth to the Kelly story, 610 AM
GH: Click on this link and view the video of Martin’s “Ask your source” presser. You decide if Martin is upset or not.
“If you write a story using some other source (than me) to write your story, then don’t ask me about it. Don’t ask me questions about a story you already wrote. I got no time for that. I think reporters who use sources to discredit a young man should never be allowed to report again. … The source should be named. If not you shouldn’t be allowed to write a story. I got no respect for that.”
Frank Martin, in his interview with Nick Wright, 610 AM
GH: Frank’s got no time or respect for Woodward or Bernstein.
“I’m an educator.”
Frank Martin, 610 AM
GH: I would love the K-State J-School to invite their MF-bomb dropping educator/basketball coach to debate the merits/perils of printing stories with unnamed sources. I would buy a ticket to that show.
“I’m not going to do my show for morons. And if the morons get left behind, so be it.”
Soren Petro, while arguing with a caller who wanted Petro to explain why he has chosen to be so critical of Mike Anderson the past two weeks, 810 AM
GH: Petro refused to acknowledge he has made the Mizzou basketball coach a personal target of late. I can’t imagine anyone buying this line but maybe Petro’s personal posse. I don’t have a problem with Petro ripping Mike Anderson and his recruiting/coaching decisions. I just don’t understand why he refuses to admit he’s decided to go after the head Tiger on a regular basis.
“No one else locally has this…”
Nick Wright, pimping some information he was reporting on the ongoing NFL labor situation, 610 AM
GH: Wright is waging a one-man radio rampage on 610 Sports to paint the NFL owners as greedy villains and the NFL players union as defenseless victims. This story makes for incredibly boring radio, news copy and television. The NFL season is more than five months away. Who cares what the billionaires vs. millionaires are doing while they wait for their deadline?
“I would rather read a mock draft than that crap.”
Steven St. John, on his revulsion for ongoing reports about the NFL labor discussions, 810 AM
GH: St. John has his pet sport of boxing as the subject he chooses to force feed his listeners. But even SSJ’s Friday morning fight fest talk isn’t as mind-numbingly bad as Wright trying to score points with Chiefs’ players by being their radio marionette.
“Listen, this shows not great but this show is the only thing between you and four hours of cookies, NASCAR and grilling.”
Nick Wright, 610 AM
“It sounds very Kietzman of me to say; ‘Some people think they (the Kansas players) are punks. I don’t think they’re punks.’ I think this is the least likable Kansas team I can remember. I just don’t think it’s a likeable team.”
Nick Wright, 610 AM
GH: The KC Star’s alternative weekly, Ink Magazine, has been working on a Nick Wright cover story to be published this week or next. The crux of the story has to do with whether or not Wright’s show can do what no one else has — topple WHB’s popular Kevin Kietzman. Looks like Nick is getting a few shots in at KK this week to promote his upcoming pub.

    Come On Nick
NICK….Dont throw stones when you play the NASCAR minute, traffic, weather, this week in Shawnee Mission South basketball or anything else Mark Miller can make a dollar off. Quiet on the rating recently I notice…wonder if they will be in the INK article. Werent you supposed to own football?

  3. CMac says:

Nick took a couple of solid and well-deserved shots at Kietzman.

    Another thing
Thanks Greg for calling a spade a spade (or a wanna be spade a spade) in regards to why Wright is on the side of the players in the NFL battle. Trying to get them to hang out with him.

Words should stand on their own
Yeah I agree, real names are not needed…… the words should stand on their own….

Post a comment…. toss out an opinion and move along. There is no need to flame war and insult. I have to come to like reading the comments sections of news stories almost better than the story. There is sometimes mor e truth in the comments, but there is also a lot of trolls and trouble makers and BS…. oh well, it what it is…and I like it

One just has to seperate the good from the bad, and quite often I read things from anons and then do further searches, and it leads to good info.

  9. P says:

    Did KK just give….
MU the kiss of death with his “I would make Missouri the favorite over Kansas” comment?

    Frank is right
Sorry, but if you aren’t man enough to name your source, then you have to take the heat. Especially in the internet/twitter era where everyone makes stuff up and is trying harder than ever to get the scoop. I saw from numerous sources online and on Twitter pronounce Morgan Freeman dead a few weeks back. And don’t compare random college sports blogger/losers with Woodward and Bernstein.

Funny how GH will pile on KK for ‘anonymous sources’ citing MU to the Big 10, but it’s cool in GH’s eyes for other journalists to make sh-t up.

Oh, and about the J-School in Manhattan…I’m a grad of that school and wrote for the school paper for the year. Rule of thumb was unless you have two, independent sources verify something, it doesn’t get printed. So what Frank said would have played just fine there.

    The Hornets to Canada?
Hey Greg, did you hear about this? It looks like the owner of the Canucks wants to buy the Hornets and move them to Vancouver. My question is are we this undesirable of a city that we may loose the Hornets to a city that the NBA failed miserbly bearly ten years ago?

  15. Canucklehead says:

Vancouver is a real city, with real owners
Of course the team will move to a real city like Vancouver.

Face the facts that Kansas City is a small town with small town ideals and cheap ass sports ownership. Just look at the cheap ass fucking faggots that own the Chiefs and Royal, those mother fuckers have no desire to spend the money required to win a championship, they only spend enough to continue to fleece the hay seeds that live in KC.

Glass and Hunt are cheap ass pieces of shit, they should be called out by the other teamowners *Steinbrennr, Jerry Jones etc) for adversly affecting thier enotre leagure by being such cheap ass pieces of shit…and YEAH. It pisses me off

SO DOUG GOTTLIEB WANTS TO TALK ABOUT OFF THE COURT ISSUES?
During Gottlieb’s freshman year at Notre Dame, he stole credit cards from a roommate and fraudulently charged over $900 to those cards; subsequently, he was expelled from the team and eventually convicted of misdemeanour fraud.

    …SO WHO HAS ISSUES DOUG?

  18. Cliffy says:

    My God, Hearne.
Please do something about this mutliple posting crap.

Gottlieb is outspoken. That’s why he gets the attention. Don’t take it so personally. He’s pretty much looked upon as a boob. Doing commentary from the directors truck during the Mizzou game last night was irritating. Just show us the damn game!

Petro too. Boob. Loves to hear himself talk. Talks more than his guests are allowed to. Asks questions that are ten minutes long. Annoying. Stump the Chumps is the worst radio in the city. Worse radio than Fescoe and that’s saying something.

Was Posnanski saying Bill Self and Colin Firth look alike … or is it the stammer?

  19. Rainbow Man says:

Martin is an taller, more Cuban Huggins.
He is on Rome Thursday. They love this guy. They can go deep again in March. Make no mistake…. Martin is an taller, more Cuban Huggins.

  20. Merle Tagladucci says:

    Nick Wright
Terrible radio host. Always trying to convince people of something. Incapable of being laid back and never able to conjure up any humor. It’s pretty bad when Danny Clinkscale is funnier than you are.

  21. Chet says:

    Hi Pot…I’m Kettle
“Petro refused to acknowledge he has made the Mizzou basketball coach a personal target of late”

Isn’t this what you’ve been doing with Frank Martin Mr. Hall? Would you like to acknowledge it now, or do you not hold yourself to the same standard as you do Petro?

  22. Potts says:

    simply mean spirited
It is isnt that gh has targeted anyone in particular, it is simply that he hates everyone. He is unhappy and mean spirited. It appears to be a classic case of “needing to get laid” or as whats his names said……

“gh is more in neeed of a blow job than any many in the non-muslim world”

  23. JP says:

    Leave GH alone
Hey I may not agree with all of GH’s stands, but I will applaud his yeoman’s work in getting this information out there. Showing us the quotes of these so called “experts”. A couple of comments.

  24. Canucklehead says:

The amount teams pay for their squads is ranked and listed for public viewing online. LLOK IT UP….. You can sss where fkn hunt and glass pay waaaaaaaaayyy (60- 150MILLION DOLLARS L ESS THAN REAL TEAMS) less than the competeion.

Why do hunt and glass even own teams? It is BS.

Cheap ass fucks like them owning pro teams hurts the league they play in and they should be told so by NON CHEAP owned. Jerry Jones should corner that fkn pussy hunt and read him the riot act for spending 60 million LESS tna Joners does. The Steinbrenner family shopuld take glass to the wood shed and berate him for being so cheep, spennding 150 million less than the Yanks……

I do not wanna hear about economics of small town teams. Look at the Twins, they are in a small market ,YET THEY KEEP GREAT PLAYERS LIKE JOE MAUER, while pussy ass faggots like glass allows a player like Zac Greinke to leave.. FK THE ROYALS!!!

I am so pissed off I cant see straight. I have rooted for and watched my Royals for my entire life (excpet whne I boyoctted for 5 years due to them striking back in the 90s) , but now?? FUCK THE ROYALS!!! I AM SICK OF LOSING GREAT PLAYERS, THE ROYALS ARE THE FARM TEAM TO THE REST OF THE LEAGUE….. MAKING THE ROYALS LOSERS!!! FK glass AND FUCK THE ROYALS, THEY ARE THE LOSERS … BUT NOT ME ANYMORE…. I LOVE deBaseball…… so this year I AM ROOTING FOR THE DODGERS!!! FUCK YOU GLASS, YOU CHEAP ASS PIECE OF SHIT…

    PS
and I will tell you another thing, if these millnionaire billionaire NFL muthafuckers do not play next year, I will boycott the NFL until 2117……you wanna fk with me????? …fuck me????? NO….FUCK YOU!!!….

    PPS
    i need a drink, 🙂
