As a father of two daughters who are elementary school age and younger I have to say I was first disturbed and then perturbed by the ridiculous slut-ization of female Halloween costumes in the past 5-6 years. These “costumes” are now starting to trickle down into costumes for Kindergarten-1st Graders. Seriously?? Why do we as a society put up with this garbage? Why does the silent majority of people bothered by this creep towards moral anarchy not rise up like Parisian pensioners and demand something better? I can remember as a kid when we actually made our costumes – everyone did — and there were no 4th graders dressed up in french maid costumes. I’m sure someone will chime in and say “to each his own…. blah, blah, blah….it’s our freedom to wear what we want or to sell what we want…” Yes it is, but you know what, most of us can see how this is not good for our society long-term. How it’s not good for little girls’ self-esteem during their formative years when they’re working out (mostly subconsciously) how to determine their own self-worth. Yes, it’s the parents’ job to instill self-worth in their kids but, good grief, we shouldn’t have to live in a culture that is hell-bent on spewing out crap contrary to this formidable task.
It’s one thing to deal with this as a college student, it’s something altogether worse to deal with it in elementary school and middle school.
