Hearne on the Street: Dialing the Apples Out of Applefest

Missing in action at the recent Applefest in Weston…

Would you believe, the actual apples?

True story.

This year’s annual Applefest in nearby Weston, Missouri was well attended. Right up there with the town’s jam packed Irish Fest this past weekend. The family fun included art, crafts, music, children’s games, a parade and more.

How about the apples?

“Don’t ask, don’t tell,” quipped one Westoner. “The apple trees that used to line the town have mostly been cut down. There are a few trees here and there, but nothing like it used to be years ago.”

The dearth of locally grown apples at Applefest has sparked debate on whether the 22-year old wingding should be renamed and re-themed as more of a Fall/October festival.

Minus the apple connection.

We attended last weekend’s Apple fest. It was fun and quite crowded, but indeed bereft of apples. I ate an apple bratwurst and my wife had an apple dumpling then we went to Vaughn’s like pretty much everyone else and got our apples and cider to take home.

Weston’s “AppleFest” is a joke. Went there a couple years ago wanting to by a fresh apple fritter and some fresh local apple cider. No fritter stands to be found, and the only apple cider was from Louisburg, KS. I’ll be Goddamned if I buy cider made over in Kansas at a town in Missouri’s apple festival. Needless to say, I haven’t been back since. Fuck Weston MO, and fuck their shitty “AppleFest”.
