Greg, you also predicted K-State won’t make a bowl game this year and that Central Florida would beat K-State by 17. I sincerely hope you’re “right” about this one, too.

And I will be in attendance. Wouldn’t miss it for the world.

GH: OC, you had to be sweatin’ that CF game at least a little when the Cats hadn’t made it past the 50 after three quarters, right?

nebraska by 10-14 points. K state running
will be minimal. Pelini wants to bury
k state…and his defense will. Once
kstate can’t run they fall apart.

On Nebraska leaving the Big XII for the Big 10: if Kansas State (or any team that isn’t Texas) was offered the same opportunity (substitute SEC for Big 10 for the Big XII South schools), they would take it in a heartbeat. Hell, aTm may STILL take the SEC up on their offer (which still stands) if Beebe doesn’t pony up the promised $20 million to the school.

Nebraska honestly chose to discuss in public (and act upon) the elephant in the room.

Perhaps had the schools that are flinging venom towards Nebraska for leaving had thought about how their votes would mess up the conference (e.g. not rotating the title game to sites in the North, allowing Prop 42 kids) instead of bending over for Texas and their whims, there would still be a conference worth supporting after this year.

No. 4 rushing offense vs. No. 102 rush defense. Advantage: Nebraska

No. 1 pass efficiency defense vs. No. 103 passing offense.
    Advantage: Nebraska
Nebraska is just a better team. Through and through. Over and over. If the Cats are forced to throw the ball, they might as well have Nebraska’s defensive secondary line up as their receivers. This one won’t be close.

Venom directed toward Huskers has nothing to do with the players or coaches. It has everything to do with delivering one last kick in the ass to their arrogant and ocndescending fans. I heard those fans storming out of Memorial Stadium after a 38-9 ass pounding to Kansas State tearing up their season tickets declaring they’d never be back. Greatest fans my ass. Snyder’s get the red out movement is brilliance in manipulation of a fan base that hasn’t quite bought completely in yet. Pellini’s act would be something like belching on an old lady and kicking her husband in the balls for eating a purple popsicle.

I eternally love the idiocy of a fan/analyst that likes to say, “We may have lost, but we were/are still the better team.” You can’t have it both ways asswipes…as Berman likes to say, “That’s why they play the game.”

And GH, you do a great job, support of liberal asses like McCarthy notwithstanding (I AM surprised by that!), but you need to hire a researcher/fact checker. Snyder turns 71 on Thursday. We missed you at last year’s septegenarian fest.

    ___

GH: My bad on Snyder’s 71st BD. I’ll get that fixed.

In my days as a hired gun for politicians, I worked for a number of politcal powerbrokers and wrote for whichever candidate they put in front of me. It was a great way to view the inner workings of both parties — I once wrote for mayoral candidates on both sides of a race (unbeknownst to the candidates). What I discovered is that both parties are simply trying to trick the voter into pulling the lever left or right

Not only does Nebraska win this game, they win the North and then take the last Bevo 12 trophy with them (after a grueling contest with Oklahoma) on their way to the Big 10.

Nebraska’s depth wins the battle. KSU’s D. Thomas will run well and keep the cat’s on the board throughout, but the depth of the Blackshirts will be enough to wear down KSU’s offense by the middle of the 2nd half. The Huskers won’t have trouble putting up points either, but they will probably be giving up plenty.

    NU 42 – KSU 28

  13. Anonymous says:

Greg, dude, you act like the nubbers have some high powered offense or something. They have a QB who can’t throw to save his life and wasn’t even selected as the starter until the season started. Their offense is horrendous and if KSU manages to score 14 points, they will likely win. NU has a great defense, but that is it. Don’t pin your hopes on what you saw in the Washington game (horrible 2-2 team) and their drubbing of SDSU (0-4, NU scored lowest of all their opponents). the truth is they are likely somewhere in the middle. A QB who can’t throw and only capitalizes on turnovers. Simply don’t commit turnovers and anyone can hang with NU.

    ___

GH: We don’t differ too as much as you might think on the Huskers. I do think the offense is better than what you remember from 2009 but still headed up by a fist-year QB whose throwing motion reminds me of what linemen look like while playing catch. NU isn’t great but they are better than KSU. I have paid far more attention to K-State this season than Nebraska. Snyder has a lot of holes on both sides of the ball and NU is going to find them.

I don’t think citing ‘fabrication’ at the direction of KK is really that much of a stretch given his recent track record of being flat out wrong. Speculation and rumor fuels his ratings and he knows it.

I enjoy Snyder’s approach at removing all things red from Manhattan. I don’t think it inspires fear at all but maybe more so a deep seeded hatred for the nubbies.

I’ll be pulling for the Cats, and every other Big 12 team that faces the nubbies this year.

Gav … what GH is trying to say is if you beat Nebraska you’re all of a sudden relevant. It’s a typical Nebraska fan viewpoint and as you accurately point out, pure gibberish.

I’m a KSU fan this week.

    ___

GH: If unranked KSU beats the 7th ranked team in the country to go to 5-0, you bet they get relevant in a hurry. How is that Nebraska fan gibberish?

  21. Anonymous says:

Gavin, the point GH is making is that no one paid a lot of attention until KSU (and others for that matter) got over on Nebraska….regardless of how good or bad Nebraska was. When KSU knocks off MU, ISU, KU, etc. no one cares. When KSU knocks off Nebraska, it raises eyebrows.

Really Cliffy? We’re talking National media here. If Nebraska beats KSU tomorrow, KSU won’t be heard of for the rest of the season. Carry on with your piss and vinegar.

I will be at the game tomorrow night and I think it will be close. Nebraska 24, K-State 17 is my prediction. Lost in all the hype is that neither team can stop the run. Both give up more than 130 yards/game on the ground. Also, neither team can pass. Much has been made about NU’s QB, but he can’t throw at all. Carson Coffman has more yards, TDs and a better passer rating. Martinez is clearly the better runner and NU’s main threat. K-State had problems in their last game against UCF, but Nebraska turned it over three times and only had 15 first downs against a D-II school in their last game. So, it’s suffices to say neither of these schools are what they once were.

What I don’t agree with is Stan Weber’s prediction that Snyder has a bunch of tricks up his sleeve. Many KSU fans have this notion that Snyder has all these wrinkles on offense that he’s been saving for Nebraska. Maybe I’m wrong, but I think we’d have seen them by now considering KSU has trailed in the fourth quarter in 3 of the 4 games they’ve played.

I’m just one K-State fan, but I don’t feel any extra hatred towards Nebraska. I don’t think this game is any bigger/smaller than if MU or CU were in town, provided they were ranked. I do think NU’s fans are a little more delusional than your typical fan base. A few years back I remember NU fans talking about ‘Restoring the Order’ in college football before playing USC in Lincoln. The Trojans were up 30 after 3 quarters before they called the dogs off.

Hey Prince, when did MU start serving beer at their games?

Anyway, to answer your question. Yeah, I was really sweating during the UCF game, but I also commented before the game on this site that I thought it would be close. We’re not going to blow anyone out with Coffman as our QB, that’s for damn sure. But Nebraska fans are expecting their team to blow us out. I just don’t see it.

PS- Kyle Minnett of D-II South Dakota State gashed the Husker D for 112 yards on 4/yrds a pop. Not saying KSU will run over them, but don’t confuse this Husker D with the real Blackshirts of Grant Wistrom and co………

    ___

GH: Agree that the Husker run D isn’t anywhere near where it was w/ Suh in the middle. NU also lost their two best linebackers earlier this season to injury and are struggling there to stop the run. DT will get loose Thursday night and he is the Cats best bet to get a win.

  26. Anonymous says:

Olathe Cat, I tend to agree with you. Nebraska’s defense is designed to stop the predominant offense in the conference, the spread, not the ground pound. I don’t know how much stock I put into the fact that teams we never really expected to run in the first place put up some nice ground numbers on us. I guess we’ll find out tomorrow night? It’s no secret what KSU will do. I anticipate a 4 quarter tussle, but I also thought the UW game would be the same.

  27. Anonymous says:

    Gavin
Well, Greg, if an unranked team beating a ranked team = relevance, then I guess I want to thank you for recognizing KU’s relevance. And before you go say “FLUKE!” or “Georgia Tech isn’t any good!,” that’s got nothing to do with with it. If you’re setting the benchmark of “relevance” as beating ranked opponents, or, to be even more generous bad teams beating good teams, then suddenly about half of all D-1 programs have newfound relevance.

I’ve always had a hard time rooting for K-State, but I might find the necessary mojo for it this week.

    ___

GH: G, I seem to bring out the beast in you. Go back and read the OTCs and newspaper articles after KU’s upset of GT. Gill was being lauded and those of us who questioned his hiring were being panned. If KSU beats NU they get ranked. If they then get beat 55-7 by Baylor they will quickly become irrelevant.

  28. Anonymous says:

    Gavin
I don’t know about bringing out the beast in me, but maybe. It’s fun to get in a fight where I really don’t have much of a rooting interest. I’m sick of absorbing body blows over KU’s general suckishness abd being unable to hit back with anything but an unexpected victory over an overrated team so when I can mix it up and feel like I don’t have to defend my school, I get a little aggro.

Also, I’m still a bit cranky over the racism (ahem, “tweaking racial stereotypes” like a standup comedian would do) of the other day. But, as I guaranteed, I’m still here and a loyal OTC reader.

Nothing to see here. Carry on.

Hey, Greg, here’s a bone for you to gnaw on. Whitlock just tweeted “Sad to hear about 810 radio in KC laying off employees, including Gary Cash and Gabe, and difficulty making payroll. It’s a great station [sic]”

Go out and get us this scoop!

    ___

GH: There’s no story here, just sad reality. 810 is a great radio station. They changed sports talk and sports coverage in Kansas City for the better and have been my radio companion for more than a decade. I hate hearing they are having the same struggles that every radio, TV and newspaper biz is facing in this new economy. Gary Cashen and Gabe were part of the original team at KCTE 1510. Gary is a funny SOB who loves good radio and a good laugh. Gabe was a goofy kid who grew into a man with WHB. Firing your friends ain’t easy and I feel for Chad, Kevin and Todd.

The 12-point Vegas line would scare the crap out of me if I was a Wildcat fan.

If Coffman is QB the whole game, it could get ugly. I believe Snyder will try putting Thomas at QB some and bring in a yet-unseen QB to change things up.

I think this is a MUST win for Bo Pelini to maintain respect from Nebraska fans. A Cornhusker loss Thursday would be shocking and would piss off many Cornhuskers. If Pelini’s the real deal, it’s a game he SHOULD NOT lose.

About the response I expected from Greg. Ducking the issue. Based on his response, one can conclude that Greg believes everything that comes out of a coaches mouth in an interview. Especially a coach as notoriously guarded as Snyder. That’s as disingenuous on Greg’s part as KK saying that Nebraska should win by 100 tomorrow.

For others (Redfan, Collective Noise) – Of course one can challenge the crap that KK spews. My issue isn’t whether or not KK fabricates shit or not. The point is that Greg does the same damn thing when he accuses KK of lying without a real shred of evidence.

Call it for what it is – hypocrisy. Only difference between Greg and KK (or Nick or Petro etc) is that Greg isn’t as successful in the media as most of those guys. He makes up just as much shit and deals the same innuendo that isn’t supported by fact. In the end it’s all just analysis and opinion.

I have no clue how this game will come out. Under Pelini, Nebraska has played poorly in September and they have a tendency to turn the football over and play undisciplined, in general.

Regarding the run defense, I think everyone is making too big a deal about it. If you compare this season to last, the opponent’s rushing numbers, through the first 4 games, are pretty similar. NU hasn’t stacked the box and their safeties haven’t been crashing the running lanes at all. Given KSU’s difficulties throwing the football, I expect this to change. Look for NUs corners to play alot more one-on-one man coverage to free up the safeties for run support. We’ll see if it works.
