Greg fun read as always. I think Nick has offically taken the three spot behind KK and Petro at least for now. Thats a nice jump in a year or so..Nick has always been good to me on his show. I have not done it as much lately, he is ‘bigger’ in the market and needs to be his own man, and he is now. We all stumble now and again, no matter what is said about the interview with Jason, HE GOT THE BIG INTERVIEW. Period, thats a nice win for Nick and 6l0. You stay after them Nick.

Jesus, Glazer. Is it possible for you to hang from this kid’s nuts any more?

The fact that you have to keep telling us how good he is may just be an indictment on how bad he really is.

No sir. 610 got the interview. It just so happened that it was aired during 3:00 – 6:00.

Hey Tiger guy, so I’m an ass cause I think Nick is doing a good job? I don’t need to suck up to him, I do enough radio as it is, I think he’s a young guy who is moving ahead nicely, if you don’t agree fine. Sorry.

I find it quite hilarious that Glazer thinks he was keeping Nick afloat when he was on the air with him, but now that he is pulling his own weight he doesn’t need Glazer on his program anymore. I think Glazer has a more inflated ego than Jason Whitlock!

I heard it and I thought he did a great job
for a young journalist. I should know…I attended the greatest J school in america.’
Wright was faced with a guy who wanted to talk and talk and talk. For a 3 hour interview it was
pretty good. Could KK have done a better job…
maybe but he didn’t get the interview.
Give credit where credit is due. Wright was good
although he needs to stay off tv. I think that
he will get better and we are seeing a potentially really strong broadcaster develope right here in kc.
It wasnet perfect and it had some unusual moments but he will learn how to handle these
types of situatioins in the future.
And let me tell all you people out there…
610 is doing very very very well with listeners.
I will go into further details later but regardless of what the ratings or ppm’s are
saying the station is on fire! They are getting
listeners who are tired of whb run down worn out
    sound…….i’ll have furtehrr proof later.

Don’t listen to Wright, so I don’t know how well he does day-to-day. But his contribution to the Whitlock Explanation was pretty weak. The best part of the show was Whitlock’s monologue, which by definition had zero involvement by Wright. When Wright started asking questions, it was as if he wasn’t listening to the first 70 minutes. (Never mind all that stuff about what’s going on at The Star–what’s the deal on rap music, Jason?) The sign of an amateur interviewer is someone with a prepared list of questions who is unable to deviate from it, even when the interviewee utters something that cries out for followup.
Maybe this guy will succeed in the long run, but so far, his ego far outweighs any actual accomplishments.

In my experience, people who have to repeatedly tell you how successful they are typically are not nearly as great as they would like you to believe and come across as insecure people.

Nick “The Shituation” Wright crashed and burned. A real hungry stud would have gone Hannibal Lecter on Whitlock and broke him into pieces.

It doesn’t take long to realize this guy doesn’t have the basic tools to be a successful sports talker or interviewer on radio or tv.

I’ve asked friends across the country to listen to him on the internet. They all agree he’s painful to listen to. I remember when Petro came on the air in KC. He hit the ground running. From the first day you had the sense that this guy was the REAL DEAL. For my money Petro is the best in KC and is as good as any other guys or gals in the Top 10 markets. Nick is a gifelte fish out of water.

by the way…for those who have never done a
    live interview…
its really hard to bear down on a guest like
you losers say nick should have. You’ve been
given permission to interview the guy…but
to get nasty with him reminds me of the
old talk shows. An interviewer like wright can
ask questions…and some of them were very
insightful…but in no way is it his job to insult or try to mangle his guest or to even make
his guest look like an ass. There can be
thoughtful discussions….even some heated exchanges…but never should the host try to
intimidate or harass the guest….theres room for
questions that are pointed but you losers wanted
wright to insult and basically spit venom at
whitlock which was not the point nor reason for
    the interv iew.
Whitlock did nothing wrong. He simply no longer
worked for the star. Why should nick attack him
like an caged animal for his choice of career
moves. This is not fox news where the interviewers goal is to insult and insinuate the
    guest is a loser.
Whitlock had a great career here. Made some huge
money and headlines. This was not an mma fight.
Greg and the rest of the whitlock haters wanted
screaming and yellling and if you want that watch wrestling or shawn hannity or bill oreilly. Nick had no bone with whitlock. It
was a show which obviously got peoples attention to let whitlock explain himself. For the 3 hours
that people listeneded…nick got big big
numbers and everyone talked about it (especially
here and at sporting events)…so stop calling for a fight…it was cordial…open…frank…
and it gave whitlock and nick a chance to talk about whitlocks career and stay in kc.
Nick did a fine job for a young guy. He’ll learn
how to od better…he’s going to be big time…
so stop acting like kids waiting for an after
    school fight to brreak out.
    Its just entertainment!

I don’t believe that conducting a competent interview means attacking the subject. But you should listen to what answers you’re getting and delve deeper when warranted. Whitlock was revealing all sorts of “news,” albeit inside-baseball KC Star stuff…and Wright, instead of getting Whitlock to elaborate or put it in better perspective, asked him dumb stuff like “what’s the deal with Tech9?” and “What was your biggest mistake?” Now that Barbara Walters has retired, maybe Wright can take ownership of the “If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?” line of inquiry.

C’mon jojo. Nick had his chance for a Danny Cafee, Nathan Jessup, “you can’t handle the TRUTH” moment and he wiffed. He had plenty of time to think this through and prep. If this was one of those on the fly deals like when they tossed the young Anne Peterson in front of Kemper when the roof collapsed I could understand his awkwardness. This could have been his Jim Rome versus Jim Everett calling him Chris Everett moment and he chunked it. He could have been a youtube star. Like Eminem said, the moment, you own it, never let it go, opportunity comes once in a lifetimne yo. Or something like that.

The only reason I think 810 did not get the interview is that Whitlock didn’t want to be under pressure to answer harder questions than rap music. For all we know, Whitlock gave Wright the list of questions!! Wright failed miserably. I can’t see Petro or KK holding back on some of the tougher questions at ALL.

you don’t have to buy his paper or turn to the

its simple… how many times has jim rome spit

so let the deal die…move on….its entertainment and nick was right in the way he

The reason 810 did not get the interview was because they would not allow the third hour (10-11 because it would cut in to Petro). Whitlock said as much when Nick Wright asked him why he was on 610. No mention as to why Whitlock didn’t ask to be on with Keitzman…my guess is he knew Keitz would have killed him. Say what you want about Keitz but he is pretty good in those high stress situations.

Sensitive much Glazer? You have to admit you are constantly on here championing Wrights cause. Not sure why, but it’s quite laughable.

“c” hit the nail on the head. Whitlock didn’t want to go on Kietzman’s show because he didn’t want the tough questions and knew that Kietzman wouldn’t shy from them. Whitlock probably figured the young, inexperienced Nick Wright would shrivel in Big Sexy’s presence, and he did. Whitlock wasn’t interested in a great interview he was interested in telling his version of the truth. Wright’s show was the easiest way to ensure Whitlock could say what he wanted and drive the dialogue on his own. This was no coup by Wright or 610 to get the interview, if anything, it was indictment of 610’s pseudo-journalism.

I still can’t figure out what anyone likes about Nick Wright’s show? He’s not a stat geek, he doesn’t have encyclopedic knowledge of any one sport, he doesn’t appear to even have thorough historical knowledge of any of the local college teams apart from the average non-alumnus fan, he doesn’t have great insight to raise the bigger issues of life that play out in the context of sports in the way that Whitlock or JoPoz has, he doesn’t have the kind of personality like a Grunhard or St. John that draws people to you and makes them like you, he doesn’t even have a voice that’s well-suited for radio. I’ll give him credit that despite lacking these skills he’s managed to finagle a prime-time slot on local sports radio, but beyond that I’m at a loss. What do you all like about him? His faux street cred? The guy went to a super expensive private school across the street from Hallbrook and then brushed off local schools to get a loftier education at Syracuse. Stick 10 random guys in a sports bar to talk about sports and I bet he’d be the 5th most popular guy in the group at best.

So this cooler weather has just been explained…h*ll just froze over…Whitlock has admitted his arrogance, admitted he was wrong…and apologized. I’m sure most of it was for column fodder, and quite possibly someone else may have written it…but the shock of reading it today in the foxsports column was almost overwhelming!

    Wright blew it.

Whitlock even pimped smacked him during the interview. Called wright a Whitlock Wannabe and that he never listens to his show because he’s irrelavent. All Wright did was sit and grin.

Whitlock would of never done that face to face with KK, Petro and even Neil Jones.

I said it before and I’ll say it again. Wright is out of there by the end of football season.

Have to agree with John. I don’t see how Wright survives until Spring Training of next year. He’ll gain some listeners just because he’s the ‘new’ guy for a while but over time he’s actually got to provide something for the listener. I remember when Rome’s show was first on the air in KC how everyone LOVED his unique shtick with the clones and tour stops, myself included. Some time after the tour stop, which was a good time despite waiting in line FOREVER, I think the average KC sports fan’s interest in Rome began to wane. Petro’s excellent coverage of local sports hastened that shift. Over time Rome’s lingo and style just seemed tired — Nick Wright will suffer the same but to a much greater extent because, unlike Rome, he can’t pull in national sports figures for interviews. 610 desperately needs to pull someone else in the booth with Nick if they want any hope of his show surviving.

The most damning criticism that can be laid at 610 and Wright’s feet on this issue is that most of us wish that Kietzman had conducted the interview with Whitlock. That would have been talk radio gold.

Is it just me or is this the second time in just a few months that Nick blows it and blames it on the “powers that be”. First the Hillman firing, not this. Pure bullshit. A real radio host would not allow that to happen.

His lack of preparation and intelligence came shining through once again. The guy makes Chris & Cowboy seem like the good ol’ days of 610 Sports. Bring back Neal Jones!

Jason sitting down with KK is COMPELLING radio.
TigerVIP nailed it. KK would have disected Whitlock. Why did Whitlock pick the #2 station? Because he knew he would be bigger and stronger than the host, and would get to run the show. Nobody runs KK’s show but KK. Same with Petro. The KK Interview would have been MUCH better radio. The national guys get it… its why they are national. They will guest and host with people they hate all the time… Its all about providing intriguing radio. KK an Whitlocki the same room, being pros would have had double the audience.

When are some of you dudes going to wake up and realize that the only reason Wright is on the air is because Ryan Maguire’s ability to hire and promote is akin to Tony Pena Jr’s ability to swing a bat? Maguire gets a hit about 1 out of every 10 times he steps up to the plate. His hiring sucks and his choices of who to promote have sucked. Across the board. Wright is where he is by default and nothing more. His talent is nothing remarkable and is slightly above average at best. AT BEST. His insight is woefully lacking and his life experience is abysmal which cuts a huge chunk out of his already shaky credibility.

A huge reason his ratings are what they are is because so many people hate listening to Keitzman. That’s the same reason Neil and Marty had a breath of life in the ratings. Those dudes were so bad, once you got rid of them you could have put Ma and Pa Kettle on the air and the ratings would have spiked. All those numbers are skewed to a degree. Plus 9 times out of 10 when you turn on Wright’s show he’s babbling about the Chiefs. People would rather listen to him babble about Jamal Charles than listen to Danny and Kevin put everyone to sleep with more Big 12 talk or hear some guy drone on about bbq’in in the backyard. So guess what, again 610 gains listeners by default. The cycle continues.

    I like Nick Wright.

Most people here are glossing over how young and inexperienced Wright is. Considering all that, I think he’s great.

He’s got a good sense of humor (SORELY lacking in the KC sports radio market) and a distinct sound. He seems very sharp, especially for his age.

I used to just switch over to Nick during 810’s grill segments, racing boys segment, the times when KK and Clinkscale would give non-sports takes (perhaps the WORST radio this city has to offer) or talk about golf, or when KK was running his show solo. Those times are so often now that when I listen to sports talk, many times I turn it straight to 610.

ALSO, I think Whitlock stayed away from KK’s show ’cause he didn’t want KK to get the HUGE 3 hours, which it would have been. Whitlock’s not afraid of answering to KK. I just think KK is the last person Jason wanted to reward.

  41. Anonymous says:

I do have to agree…the racing boys and the BBQ talk have me searching for a new station PRONTO. But then I turn it to 610, and Wright is still wrong.

But I would put money on it that JW didn’t go on KK because he didn’t want his feet held to the fire.

Something interesting. Wright has the thinist skin I have ever seen. At least in the public. I looked on Bottomline Communication and Wright reported the site to Arbitron because they post the ratings.

Wright was tired of the site posting 610’s and Nick’s poor ratings.

What a prick. Wright, get better ratings and maybe the truth that no one listens to your show won’t hurt so much.
