Hearne: Whitlock in Paycheck Stare Down with Star

This just in…

An unnamed source close to a pal of absentee Kansas City Star sports scribe Jason Whitlock says a salary dispute lies at the heart of the big fella’s two-month plus, unexplained absence from the newspaper.

“An insider at the Star told me that Whitlock texted another (national) sports reporter, saying he’s not at liberty to say this publicly but ‘I’m in a contract dispute with the Kansas City Star. Two years ago they cut my salary due to the financial issues the Star was having. I reluctantly accepted it, hoping it was for the short term. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.’ “

There’s more…

” ‘Furthermore, the Star asked me to write another column for the editorial section and I did so for two reasons. One, I sometimes enjoy getting outside the sports arena. And two, in the hopes that showing my loyalty and adding to my work load that would encourage the Star to reinstate my former agreed upon salary. I don’t think I’m being greedy or unfair.’ “

W’s bottom line: ” ‘Fair is fair, I’m not being greedy but I need to be paid fairly. That’s what this is all about and I hope we can work this out and I can return to the Star.’ “

There you have it, boyz and girlz. Back to you, Fitzpatrick…

Yes, that makes the most sense.

The Falling Star is always embroiled in one issue or another. If Whitlock wants fair pay for fair work, he may want to look for greener pastures to graze.

$alaries these days are an intersting topic.

How much does a person deserve?

Does the Chief of Police of KCMO deserve $165,000 per year??, when he really never risks his life and is merely an administrator?

How about the Deputy County Manager of JOCO being paid $159,000? while the top guy make $187,000!!!!..WTF ??!!!

Some government puke makes 2 million dollars every ten years for sitting on his ass??

And tell me how many Oracle Applications Technical Managers being paid over $100,000 do they need?

This is all while the many many people are hurting for cash and cant find jobs paying $8.00 per hour.

I understand some super salaries WHEN THE PERSON IS EARNING THE COMPANY, OR TEAM, MORE THAN THEY ARE BEING PAID!!!

I have AWLAYS been a “on commision” person. If I dont earn..I dont get paid. I MUST MAKE THE COMPANY MORE THAN I AM PAID.

Does Jason make the company more than he is paid?? …. Did Cameron Diaz used to guarantee a movie will bring in more than her 20 million salry?? …IF YES ..PAY HER..IF NOT.. DONT.

It is a simple question…….. Does JW make the Star money?? if yes pay him…if not dont.

Which brings us back to these fking millionaire, BMW driving, mansion living salaries of government workers…

look it up… I am VERY pissed off so many govenrment workers make so much money and dont bring in any money..WTF!!!

Right! We’re supposed to believe that it’s just a mere salary dispute and that Whitlock’s absence has nothing to do with the rumor that there were recently significant price hikes in the Star breakroom’s food vending machines. Sorry, but I’m not buying it. And apparently Whitlock isn’t either.

The sourcing is a little weak and the quotes aren’t exactly clear: Are they Whitlock’s texts or is it the source being quoted directly? And, if it’s the source (which I suspect) what is going on here is that the source is saying that someone else (not Whitlock or anyone involved with the Star) told him that Whitlock said it’s a contractual dispute?

Do I have that right? An unidentified source at the Star says someone else says that Whitlock said it’s a financial dispute? That’s not even hearsay. Not that we’re operating on a legal standard or anything, but Jesus.

And has Whitlock ever used the word “furthermore” even once? Those quotes really read like someone NOT named Jason Whitlock. At least clarify who is being quoted, wouldja?

HC: Check the quote marks carefully. I corrected. And yes, Whitlock has used the word “furthermore” in his columns.

Look up what is happening in Bell California right now…the city manager made 800k last year and was slated to get 1.5million this year until some smart citizens found out…

Hearne? Unnamed sources? Like “Jason will be back Sunday.” Yup, Jason sure was. There was a note to readers on page S-2 that he was on vacation. Great return prediction, Junior.

    john m,
That Bell California thing is what got me looking…and I THINK $180,000 IS TOO MUCH FOR GOVERNMENT WORK WTF??!!!!

These people are adminstrators who bring in NO money. They are government workers making 2 million dollars $2,000,000 in 10 years. WHILE THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT CUT BACKS!!!

How about trim those salaries back to $60,000 per year, and AGAIN….WTF is up with all those Oracle admins making $100,000 per year!!???

hard times??!!! not for government workers in Johnson county of the Chief of Police in KCMO!!!!

    SOMETHING IS VERY WRONG HERE!!

I would have thought Whitlock would be under contract, in which case the newspaper could not unilaterally change its terms without liability. If so, the debate about Whitlock’s worth is meaningless; legally, one is worth what a contract stipulates.

    This needs further examination.

The new Grad expects good pay right out of school, a house in Leawood, a set of Callaways, weekends at the Lake and Season tix at Allen. But they always want to leave at 3 on Friday, NEVER stay late, NEVER work weekends, and basically work 38 hours a week. When the economy rocks, they ride the gravy train on their fraternity contacts. Well, the system is correcting itself. There were too many lazy people making too much money. And now they are all getting fired. Show me someone who is making good money in this economy, and I will show you a hard worker.
I like Whitlock… but now is not the time for a staredown.

If Whitlock’s contract expired, then he is a free agent. I hadn’t seen that subject addressed in the many previous posts on Whitlock’s status.

As for investigating the case, I’m simply not that interested. I haven’t read Whitlock with any regularity for years, since I consider him a blowhard and buffoon (why I also don’t listen to Limbaugh and Rhodes or watch O’Reilly, Olbermann, Beck, et al; idiocy is bipartisan).

I agree with Not Happy. The salaries of some of these people is unbelievable.

How do we find out the salaries of governments workers in our own community? If someone knows, please post it here. We need to let the public know exactly where their tax dollars are going – salaries. It must stop now!

and…in the Wall Street Journal yesterday, and article titled, “Incomes Fall in Most Metro Areas.” The areas income ROSE, you guessed it, the areas with strong federal government ties. Hmmm…the federal government that has it’s own printing press. No recession for them I guess. We, the American taxpayers, get to pay the tab.

There was also an article about Bell, CA. That guy that was making the million bucks will retire and receive $600,000 annually. Also, in CA over 550,000 retired government employees receive over $100,000 each year. The government in CA is bankrupting itself.

The more I think about this the madder I get. These government workers had built in pay increases that rose through the good times.

IF HOUSING PRICES CAN DROP SO CAN THE SALARIES WE PAY!!!

SHARE IN THE BAD TIMES FOLKS!!

YOU WANT TO RAISE MY TAXES TO PAY YOUR $180,000 SALARY?? FK YOU!!!

here is one place to find the info…

To Kitty Crash, who asked where to find the salaries of all those government officials.
Try Info Central on the KC Star’s website. It’s all there.

I hope Whitlock would get paid what he is worth. With it, he might be able to buy one doughnut.

Secondly, if Whitlock leaves, and if they could dump Hendricks completely, I would resubscribe to the Star. Until then, no way!
