OTC: KSHB’s Amy Hawley Tangles With Sour Lew On His Job Status

Question upsets Lew PerkinsAmy Hawley, a reporter and weekend news anchor for KSHB TV 41, and her photographer stopped Lew Perkins for an interview at a golf outing Monday afternoon. I first heard portions of the audio of Hawley

You were proud of her work? I didn’t realize you had something to do with it that would allow you to take pride in it. Well done, Greg!

I don’t think Hawley was quite as poised as you make it sound, but I thought the line of questioning was fine. I think she, understandably, she was caught off-guard by the questions Perkins posed to her. I guess she handled it OK, but she kept saying, “The blackmail, the blackmail.”

I do agree that if it had been one of the regular sports reporters, he wouldn’t have challenged the question like that.

But what’s with coaches/administrators using this BS “I respect what you

Amy Hawley, a KU grad, was being fair. if Lew Perkins does not want to answer questions, then don’t appear at public events.

As for Bob Fescoe, he is embarrassing himself on the radio. He is performing fellatio daily on ku athletics and it is really getting disturbing. Just take one step back and try to look at it a little bit objectively.

And Amy is right…points systems for seat assignments should not be cloaked in secrecy. It should be obvious to you that if you want these seats and you donate this amount, you will get those seats.

Don’t forget, Bukaty also works for the Jayhawk network, in football and women’s bball capacities, as well as some spot work on the men’s TV broadcasts, Greg. He was probably shying away from the topic…because Lew is also one of his (many) bosses.
I’d feel uncomfortable in his shoes, too.
If he felt a conflict of interest, it would serve well to recuse himself from the room for that moment and let the rest of the jury talk through the Lew topic until it’s done.

    ___

GH: True, Doug, and a point I should have made in my column. But Nate feeling uncomfortable aside, he needs to be a journalist first and a part-time KU sideline reporter second.

Lew Perkins is terrible with the media. Some people are just smooth talkers, and the ones who aren’t bumble like Lew does.

When you take a guy like Lew who’s really clumsy around reporters and throw in 2-3 sensitive storylines (two of them scandals) in the span of two weeks, and you’re going to get situations like this.

Lew is about 6-foot-6, 350 pounds. He’s got a big, big ego. He’s a bully. Kudos for Amy to stand up to her, but I also believe Lew when he says he’ll never talk to NBC again. I bet Jack Harry won’t be too happy.

Although I still have doubts, Greg, that you did anything warranting pride in Hawley’s work, I will say her questions were fair. The biggest point to be made here is that Lew should not be doing media appearances. Sometimes he has to, like the press conference regarding the ticket mess. But he should, whenever possible, avoid actually appearing before the media. He needs a professional PR person to be his press secretary. Dude has never been good with media. I still cringe whenever I think about how he denied that Mark Mangino had been fired and instead stuck with “coach resigned.” And he didn’t handle Hawley well, either.

But this is not another log on the “Shitcan Lew,” bonfire. Maybe, MAYBE, the subject matter of Hawley’s questions will do the guy in, but the fact that he is shitty with media and does his damndest to be imperious with a reporter is not a reason to fire the guy, no matter how much he is hated, especially by anti-KU people.

Again, let’s se what the Chancellor’s review of his conduct reveals. If it’s bad, he is probably gone. But I am pretty sure that most KU people realize, with all the conference realignment talk, that we want Lew Perkins on that wall. We NEED him on that wall.

dp, I’ll take the over. Obviously, the real question is what the Chancellor’s investigation finds. If he is dirty, he probably has to go.

Cliffy, I was typing the above when you posted, but I’m sticking with Lew. He’s had some massively bad stuff happen on his watch, no doubt. Any my season tickets were ones that took a huge hit because my Williams Fund contributions aren’t all that big, so you could say that his policies have hurt me personally.

But some of the stuff that happened on his watch are: The doubling of funding for athletics. That’s Perkins. I fully admit that MU got hosed in the 2008 Orange Bowl and while I won’t apologize or even really feel badly about it, I understand why Mizzou is pissed and has every right to be. Still, I’m delighted we got to go to an Orange Bowl and that was all Perkins as well. We got a beautiful new football practice facility that Dennis Dodd (an MU grad, if I am not mistaken) says compares favorably (if not not quite evenly) with Texas. That was Perkins. Same for the new hoops practice facility. He works his ass off to make sure all KU scholarship athletes get the best possible EVERYTHING. Those things are all Perkins doing.

Dude is imperious, can be mean and is undoubtedly thin-skinned. But I don’t want some interim AD trying to navigate the conference realignment mess. I want Lew. I’m not condoning all the ugly stuff that has happened on his watch, and maybe he gets the axe after he finds us a soft landing in some BCS conference or fails to do so, but today? I’m with Lew Perkins.

I’ll take the over only because KU doesn’t think it can afford to axe an AD at this time. This is a perfect fucking storm. AD’s do nothing, NOTHING,but fund raise and schmooze. The next year, maybe two weeks who knows, is going to be like a game of chess. This is going to be the most tumultuous time ever for a KU AD and I bet he makes it to guide KU through this. You can’t fire him right now and do a AD search can you? I don’t know maybe that would help. Gray-Little needs to wipe the dumbfounded look off her face, get on the phone and find out whether Perkins still in his job is a detriment or a positive in the realignment process.

Okay also just wanted to state that this Hawley is exaggerating a little bit I think. People who have donated millions are getting moved back? I highly doubt it. For that ticket scandal to go on that long, they weren’t pissing off the highest of the highest…the people the AD’s office actually had contact with.

jojo, I appreciate the advice. I wonder how it is that KU has the National Championships, the BCS bowl appearances and Final Fours (I know, I know, cheating, right) while MU has neither of those things when MU has access to your world-class advice. Your offer of assistance is sincerely appreciated even if the best comparison you can come up with is to a FUCKING FICTIONAL TELEVSION SHOW!!!!!!!

It’s been my experience in life that most of the time, people ultimately get what they deserve. It looks to me like Lew is about to get what he deserves and if jojo is right, KU is too.

I get the concept of being a hard-nosed businessman, but you also need morals and values. I really think Lew lacks those and obviously surrounded himself with like-minded people.

I find it humorous that KU folks were so proud of Lew getting them a bowl bid they didn’t deserve … and now their chancellor is calling MU begging them to stay in the Big 12.

    Gavin
Cliffy, to be clear, I’m not proud of getting a bowl game we didn’t deserve. I’m proud of the fact that our AD was able to persuade the Orange Bowl that we were a better team to invite to their game. Deserve’s got nothing to do with it. We went 12-1 and beat Virginia Tech. What I’m proud of is that season. And when people have forgotten the circumstances of how the invitations were issued, KU will still be in the record books as winning the Orange Bowl. I’m not “proud” of the way we got that bid, but I’m not ashamed of it either. Did Perkisns outmaneuver Mike Alden? It looks like it. Blame the Orange Bowl, blame the Big XII for having a rule that allowed this and why don’t you blame Alden for getting outmaneuvered while you’re at it?

  23. Anonymous says:

    Cliffy
If I understand the situation correctly, Alden played by the rules. Perkins did not. And the Big 12 commissioner stood idly by.

I do not think less of Alden for getting “out maneuvered” in that situation.

What it looks like to me is a bona fide news reporter coming in there and showing these blowhard sports talking heads a thing or two about real journalistic practice. How else can one explain that the only real defense of her work on the local sports talk scene (at least from the quotes I read above) came from a non-journalist, Gary Lezak, who works with Hawley? Particularly pathetic was the blast from Danny (“I’m inclined to not necessarily disagree with you on that, Kevin”) Clinkscale. Although, that he would have a problem with assertive journalistic work comes as no real surprise, frankly. Finally, as to Hawley: Cute and blonde? Give her 6 months, she’ll be at Fox News.

As for Lew himself, what gives with this quote: “I’ve had a couple of people done that to me. That’s not repeated.” What’s worse here, (1) Lew’s grammar or (2) his apparent ignorance of the meaning of the word “repeated”? And what’s with the trite little threats about never talking to KSHB again and his “old what for” finger wagging (nice line by St. John, BTW)? How does this man still have a job? I know he has supporters at KU, but I’ve also heard that he’s sure rubbed plenty of important people there the wrong way as well. But regardless — not my school, not my fight.

And finally, you were in rare form in today’s column, Greg. “Cletus”? KK’s “special spin”? The one non-soft object on Lew’s body? Good stuff.

  25. Anonymous says:

    Gavin
Fair enough. Your understanding of the situation is probably better than mine. I’ve never heard anything beyond speculation that Lew Perkins didn’t play by the rules. I’m sure you have some source that proves otherwise. I simply don’t have access to the same information.

    Greg,

Totally disagree on your Hawley take. I thought it was bush.

It’s SO obvious Hawley was trying to push Lew’s buttons. She panicked when Lew turned the question on her, so she threw out the word “blackmail” 3 times in her 2nd question. She knew what she was doing.

Ooooohhhhhhh, way to go Hawley. You made a college A.D. angry. Congratulations.

Yes, Lew handled it very poorly and he’s being a PR pain in the ass for Kansas. It’s been a rough, stressful 2 weeks for Lew and he’s clearly getting ruffled, but there’s no excuses. He can’t act like that.

But glorifying Hawley in her amateuristic, bating style of reporting is a crock of crap.

Gavin … If memory serves, it was inappropriate for Perkins to have any contact with Orange Bowl officials. So, if I’m not mistaken the “persuasion” he applied that you said you are proud of was inappropriate. But the Big 12 allowed it to happen, so shame on them too. It’s water under the bridge.

Nick still has his blinders on. She didn’t bait Perkins. She asked legitimate questions of a unversity official who has a lot of explaining to do. She didn’t panic. She had to use the word blackmail three times in order to get her question through all of Lew’s grunts and groans. It was a HUGE mistake for Lew to try to turn the question on her. It blew up in his face big time.

My memory is also that it was inappropriate to have any contact. But, as far as I know, he DIDN’T have any contact. I’m sure you know about something specific or can point me to al ink where Lew or Orange Bowl officials said that they spoke, but when I referred to “persuasion,” I was talking about helping to build KU up to be a good enough draw and getting enough fans to travel to make the point to the Orange Bowl that they should invite KU. I also have to believe that even though Mizzou beat KU that year, Mizzou getting drilled by Oklahoma in the championship game couldn’t have helped MU’s chances. If there was any contact, I’m not aware of it.

And I agree iwth you that Hawley was doing her job and doing it pretty well. And Lew should not have tried to bully her. But, again, this is just proof that Lew needs a media flack, not that he is corrupt. There may be proof that he is corrupt, but you won’t find it in that interview anymore than Mike “I’m a man! I’m Forty!!” is proof that he is a bad coach simply because he can’t play nice with the press.

Cliffy, you aren’t asking like a dick and I won’t answer like one. Honest answer: I don’t know. Maybe. If Lew was dirty, obviously he had to know. But there is a school of thought that a CEO’s job is to be a big picture guy. He isn’t supposed to get involved with the moving parts. He hires people he trusts and puts them in position and empowers them to do their jobs. Clearly Lee, at a minimum, misplaced his trust in all those ticket office people, but it strikes me that if his job was to fight for funding, get donors and oversee the big projects (like the new practice facilities), then it certainly seems possible that he wouldn’t know, especially in a business that is so cash-intensive about a good that is so difficult to track. Doing my best to leave my political beliefs at the door, our last President (of the US), was a firm believer in this style of management and I do think that some less-than-savory things occurred on his watch but probably without his knowledge. I realize the situations aren’t easily compared and that the relative importance of the two isn’t even close, but it seems possible.

At this point no one has shown me that Lew knew anything. Maybe he did and maybe he didn’t. I won’t deny the possibility but I’m the type of guy that likes to see something close to proof before I make a judgment.

hawley made it a point to say that she really wasn’t engaged in gotcha journalism. it seems to me that approaching a guy at a golf outing and asking him his thoughts on his potential termination is exactly that. then she goes on radio to talk about “the incident”. feels like she is trying to inject herself into the story and be the news as much as report report it.

there are a lot of reasons to question perkins’ viability as kansas ad. to me this isn’t one of the reasons. it’s more of a tv station and reporter piling on.

  48. Anonymous says:

Good job by Hawley, a lot better than a lot of more seasoned reporters — of any media. It’s especially difficult for a reporter to both maintain composure and stand firm when one-on-one with a cantankerous subject playing silly word games instead of answering the friggin’ questions. She handled Perkins’ attempt to put her on the defensive with relative aplomb (if that is his interview strategy, he needs better consulting).

So now Lew can take the Dick Cheney approach and book with Fox … er, 610 for a soft-soap chat with Fescoe or 810 for even more creampuffs from Bukaty — or a fawning KK followed by a post-interview KK rip. They’ll be glad to let Lew rip KSHB — as long as he doesn’t diss Mad Jack to KK — and won’t get any closer making him accountable for the recent controversies at KU.

One thing, though, Hawley put the boys to shame. One of the all-male sports-talk stations should look at getting her aboard in some capacity — maybe teaming her with Nick Wright, who could use the help (the longer he flies solo, with no interview or sideman, the worse he wears). If she can snag interviews and conduct them as directly and unapologetically, it will be fresh air in a stale market.

Sorry, Barry, but I think you’re wrong on all counts. It’s not a “gotcha” to approach a public figure at any public venue and request an interview, which that figure may voluntarily accept or deny. Perkins accepted, probably much to his regret. That’s his problem, not the journalist who was out working a story. Perkins’ discomfort is and should not be a factor in a reporters’ going about doing his or her job. If that was a consideration, there would be no free, independent press; it would be shackled by artificial boundaries.

Since the interview created controversy, Hawley did the right — and admirable — thing by not hiding, but quite fairly and dispassionately discussing it. Who expects a person who makes their living in the media to be publicity shy? However, it doesn’t appear she was out front in tooting her own horn; rather, she was reactive.

That you don’t see the recent controversies as meriting Perkins’ dismissal is one point of view. However, you cannot deny that others may have a different opinion, and hence Perkins’ answer to that and other questions may have held far more interest to them than it did to you. Because you don’t consider it an issue, should you deny others of a different perspective the opportunity to have their concerns addressed? I could give a crap about golf, but I’m not demanding that it never be discussed or broadcast.

Sorry, Barry, not trying to offend. However, as a working reporter myself, I sometimes feel it part of my duty to explain the function and standards of journalism when it appears there is some misunderstanding. Lord knows there’s enough lousy reporting going on, at the highest levels of the profession, that one who does it well — like Hawley, in this instance — should be defended.

I was just getting on to link that now. That blog has been the closest to being ahead on these expansion rumors the entire time. It’s not some dude in his mom’s basement posting drivel. Based on the number of comments on his entries, in the thousands, he’s not some small-time guy. And he hasn’t thrown around his “inside sources” until now. I’m inclined to believe that NU, MU and ND get an offer now, just as I was to believe MU wouldn’t in his previous post.

    jojo..blogfather indeed…funny as shit.
Sounds to me like Lew is failing on the conference realignment? Sounds like these deals are already done?
Lew was knocking $150,000 at the height of his career…enter Lawrence and you now have $4 million paydays..haha…this shit is getting embarrassing..like watching some recent Lotto winner meltdown. Lew was an ass in that interview…Holy Shit the guy has 0 Political Capital left…he is spent.

  54. Anonymous says:

    Gavin
bschloz, I disagree. I think Lew must have some political capital left. First, Anschutz has gone on record and said he doesn’t deserve to be fired, at least not right now. That is a TON of political capital right there. Second, there are a lot of boosters who are firmly behind Lew unless, of course, he is found to be really dirty (which, I have to admit, may happen). Hell, if you look at Amy Hawley’s comments above you can see that she said that some boosters were terrified of Lew. It doesn’t stand to reason that if Lew is really fatally wounded that people would be scared. Finally, the real issue is whether Lew has any juice left in any conferences or with other ADs. It’s speculative, but I’m betting he does.

mccrash, get over yourself. you are not the only one who has worked in the media, and the rest of us who have don’t need a lecture on journalism 101 from you. as far as who has the problem understanding, you might want to re-read the part of my post that says there are a lot of reasons to question perkins’ viability as the ad. how you decided that i “don’t see the recent controversies as meriting perkins’ dismissal” is beyond me.

if you don’t consider sticking a microphone in front of someone on a golf course and asking them about their possibly losing their job as gotcha journalism, then we just disagree. but when you feel like talking down to someone else in the future, you might want to consider the concept that you are not the only one in the world whose opinion on journalistic ethics might be reasonable and that others who (gasp) disagree with you might actually have as much or more experience in the profession than you do.

Gavin,I’m sure all the big donors want to keep things the way things are. They know where they stand…probably don’t want to start the process over again. Kansas is an elite school..Basketball Royalty…and Football on the rise. I don’t think Lew Perkins is going to be a difference maker one way or another in whether KU is in this conference or that. Right now he is a distraction for the program…can’t even walk to his car without getting “The 60 Minutes Treatment” Its like saying don’t think of a pink elephant….Lets get some KU family in there to run this. I am not in Williams Fund and I don’t know how the money flows. I will be paying tuition x2 next year and for the next 6 years.
How sweet would it be… KU to The Big East..we could win that conference in football and basketball. How cool… to have all those great hoops programs on the schedule. Frankly KU needs to leverage hoops..lets see Louisville UCONN GT SYRC instead of CO..NE..ISU.

Yes, Barry, you need a lecture in Journalism 101, because you apparently don’t quite get the concept of a reporter asking questions and a subject — in this case a public official in a public setting — answering them (sorry, if “getting over myself” involves ignoring the experience gained in 40 years as a working reporter, then it will never happen; that I defend fellow reporters who are doing their jobs well is a duty). Not all journalism is done in the staged setting of a press conference or an official’s office. If Perkins didn’t want to talk, he wasn’t obligated to do so. That he came off like a horse’s patoot is not the reporter’s fault for attempting to ask direct questions about the controversy surrounding the subject’s office.

“the alumni are afraid of retribution” by
    perkins.
Thats enough said right there to unload this
goofball. Sounds like the mafia to me.
Are those basketball tickets so valuable that
someone would be intimadated and whipped by
the guy to keep them. No class at KU>
I’d fire the dog just for wearing that outfit
in public. With 4.4 million a year you’d think
the guy could shop somehwere else besides
the Disney store. And that hat…how could hawley keep a straight face with the gorilla
wearing that thing on his head. Come on
chanceller…give the guy a clothing allowance
    when he’s out in public.

Hopefully friday this entire escapade can
come to an end…and then bebe will get
the heave ho and look for another place to
    work.
This whole mess could have been avoided with
some fair and honest deals between the
    schools.
Hopefully KU and K state will find a conference.
UMKC was looking to build a mid west conference
with some teams like wisconsin of green bay
and avila. That’s probably where the hawks and
    cats will end up.

grand jury convened….not good for ku program.
What conference would want to add a program
that was under fed investigation? Bill
Self has to be feeling terrible right now.
But as I said…the greed and arrogance of ku
is comeing out. I predicted this over a year
ago with my comments. So again I was right.
I feel sorry for the bball team. A dark shadow
will be cast over them when the whole ordeal
    is reported.
This is bad for KU> But most of the KU people
are not affected by this because they believe
that because they have a final 16 basektbll
team that they can do no harm.
    Wrong..when greed takes over…sh8t happens.
    BP/Enron/Goldman Sachs/Citicorp/AIG/ etc….
    the story is the same.
MU curators to meet thursday to decide on

THE FOLLOWING SCHOOLS FORM THE SUPER MIDWEST

hey jojo, that super midwest conference (without KU) has as many final four and national championships as MU!
I pulling my jojo now…..my sources are telling me ND is in and NU and MU which have not even been offer will not get offered. ND got the juice, not just mo tv’s national tv’s.
All the federal grant money MU and NU are looking at will be gone and not there, well because of a 13 trillion dollar deficit.
Unlike jojo I don’t have sources I look at what is happening in the world and what makes sense.
    Oh BTW mu still sucks!

ku alumni and their tony soprano wanna be (lew).
I hope everything works out for all the
schools….especially ku because they look like
    the outside guy wanting in.
and with your guty testifying along with all
the other people to a grand jury…i doubt
many coferences will want that kind of
    heat coming in.
but ku should be okay. If you can’t take it
    sean…don’t dish it out.
I take lots of grief on here and once in a
    while i dish some out.
    so be kool…hang tight…and i’m sure ku
and k state and even mu will all be oaky..
unless mu gets the invitation and the texas
andoklahoma schools split off leaving ku and
k state and iowas state…what happens
    then…thats the real work….
and thanks for the compliments….i always
love to get under the skin of a ku fan.

We are calling for Lew’s head? What about Beebe? Just like that … Poof… The Big 12 is gone. Someone really screwed up here. A conference that is VERY relevant in the two major sports on the national scene is done. They have several recent national titles in both. What a shame.
