Greg – nothing about 810 being down for an hour or so this morning? They couldn’t even be bothered to even Tweet to let listeners know when they’d be back on. Poorly handled by 810, Nate, Steven, Jake and Aaron – all of whom have individual Twitter accounts and could have done it.

    ___

GH: Good point on using Twitter to let the listeners know what’s going on while 810’s signal was down. I was jogging this morning and at first thought my headset radio was just having an issue finding 810’s signal. For all the money that blowtorch station supposedly makes, you’d think it could keep a full-time engineer on staff to make sure the station is broadcasting during daylight hours.

Pretty thin line between human error and covering the spread. NO REASON instant replay should not be in place in baseball. Baseball should also enlist some technological help in establishing a consistent strike zone and calling balls and strikes. These pantloads behind the plate each have their own “zone”. That’s bullshit! When guys are throwing 90 plus with velocity and “mojo” on the ball it takes a pretty skilled person to make the right calls consistently.

What if the refs in the NBA could raise, lower or tilt the hoops every trip up and down the court?
Lew Perkins is probably gonna be like herpes at KU. He’ll never go away and will have nasty flare ups two or three times a year.

The fact that the KU administration, faculty, student body, student athletes, city of Lawrence, state of Kansas or Board of Regents hasn’t crushed his balls in a vise and sent him packing with NO SEVERANCE yet is indicative of world class ignorance and stupidity and a lack of character that makes Charlie Sheen look like Mister Rogers.

Armando Galarraga, after seeming to have caught it as a snow-cone, quickly shook his glove hand to drop the ball down into the pocket. It gave the appearance that he might have slightly bobbled it.

Maybe that slight movement made Joyce momentarily think Galarraga didn’t fully catch it until the runner stepped on the base.

If Galarraga WOULD HAVE gotten the perfect game, the center fielder should have shared the glory with his SPECTACULAR over-the-shoulder catch near the fence. Wow.

    ___

GH: One of the lesser but still unfortunate tragedies of Joyce’s blown call is that Austin Jackson’s Mays/Wertz-like catch will be quickly forgotten. Wow is right.

How is Joyce’s call “not as wrong as Dekinger’s”? The Denk play was inches difference, Joyce’s call was off by a step and a half.

    ___

GH: Denk’s call cost the Cards a WS title — no matter what you hear from some Royals fans.

If you remove the umpires, who’s going to get dirt kicked on them when the video replay goes kaput or some doofus reading the display makes an error? Are NFL replays foolproof? Players aren’t foolproof. Professional sports are entertainment. Blown calls by humans are part of that entertainment. Leave it alone.

Shut up Jojo. The only thing that could set a NCAA big boy back is the death penalty and they don’t do that anymore. KU will be fine if they announce BS and the team each murdered a hooker on last year’s L.A. trip. Now if Mizzou got in trouble, the NCAA would probably gut you like a fish to make an example to real programs. Sucks to be you.

I still don’t understand where the talk on giving back trophies originates. Now if jojo is correct and there are players getting paid and what not, well that’s one thing. But even if Lew was stealing tickets and funneling the proceeds directly to himself, even if he was the one giving Rodney Jones instructions on how to run a corrupt Williams Fund, where is the competitive advantage to be gained from this? The competitive advantage is where the NCAA gets involved and hands out sanctions, isn’t it? If a school makes too many phone calls or texts during a dead period, you can see how that presents an advantage. If a school lies about a kid’s grade to keep him eligible, that means something on the field of play. But how does KU Athletics LOSING millions of dollars, even if it was done by a corrupt AD, lead to a competitive advantage on the field? You’re telling me that by LOSING money KU got ahead?

I’m not saying there is nothing there, mind you. At this point in the death bo 1000 cuts KU fans are dealing with, you’d have to be stupid to say you know what’s going on or how it’s going to play out. And I guess it’s possible that somehwere in there is some proof that KU actually cheated in a way that would interest the NCAA. Who knows how this whole thing will spiral? Certainly no one on this board, jojo and his “sources” notwithstanding. But before we talk about giving back trophies, please explain to me how the NCAA finds that KU “cheated” based on what we know right now?

  16. Anonymous says:

Based on “what we know right now,” I think you’re right, Gavin. But I do think the NCAA will do some poking around once the FBI completes it’s investigation.

Stevo is very worried that jojo is right.

It appears to me that Lew is acting like a wounded man. As I said earlier, at his impromptu news conference the other day he looked and sounded like a confused, doddering old fool. I think he’s extremely worried at this point. Time will tell.

Okay…what do we have here? Jojo is a Mizzou fan screaming that the sky is falling in Lawrence! What a huge surprise. Here’s the worst case scenario: KU has been paying players and Dent has inside knowledge of that fact. That is the worst case scenario right? The one unforgivable sin that is never overlooked in the NCAA? Well, let’s say its true. Is the NCAA going to listen solely to this Dent guy who has been…fired from his job, convicted of beating his wife, charged with a felony (blackmail) if someone else doesn’t corroborate?
Look, am I worried about my team? Hell yeah. But don’t doom and gloom when you have one rogue dude launching a vengeance attack on KU. This guy is a bigger loser than Lew. I called for Lew’s job after reading the full report and the full supporting exhibits. His lack of oversight is reason enough to fire him.
If KU broke the rules in terms of players, then they should pay the price. Bill Self has a lot of capital built up from winning the NC. It would have to be very bad for him to be in danger and I’m not even close to going there yet. The truth is KU has let big donors get too close to the program and exercise equipment vendors as well.

  25. Anonymous says:

But don’t listen to JOJO hedging his bet by saying KU is going to get nailed soon. If he wants to make such claims, how about some supporting fucking evidence? Then I’ll be the first one to listen.

I can’t believe I’m going to do this, but my ability to avoid actual work apparently knows no bounds. To get away from this dramatic pile of stuff I get paid to handle, I’m going to engage jojo.

jojo, you say you have never been wrong. First, some of us have been waiting well over a year for you to race Greg Hall. Hasn’t happened that I’m aware of. I don’t guess this proves you right or wrong about anything, but it does sort of tend to add color and texture to the proceedings.

More to the point, though, you haven’t been proven right about MU going to the Big Ten, have you big fella? Now, maybe it will happen, but you can’t go around saying that everything you have written/posted here has been correct when, as far as I know, MU is still a member of the Big XII conference and hasn’t yet even announced its departure. I know, I know, you have sources. You know lots of very important people and you make ten times my salary and you’ve even had sex with a woman (TWICE!). But the way you prattle on and on saying “I’ve been right about everything I’ve posted” when the thing you run your mouth about the most is, at best, something that won’t happen for at least months (if it happens at all) is the most annoying tic of your whole truckload of annoying tics.

I am confident, no, I am certain that if I ever actually read one of your posts from beginning to end I could find at least 5837 more errors you’ve made since Christmas, but as you only want your posts to be read by people who lack an understanding of basic grammar and sentence structure, I haven’t bothered to finish. Still, the grandaddy of all your drivel is “Mizzou to the Big Ten LOSERS!” and until that actually happens, you can’t claim the statement that “[you’ve been right about everything [you’ve] posted.” So unless you’re willing to name names or give something more than vague, badly-typed chatter laced with cryptic references about how important you are, can you please give it a rest, you middle-aged bedwetter?

I know, I know. I’m a loseer, or looser, or loserr or however you’re misspelling it today. Got it. I shall go fuck myself immediately.

Since hitters strike out in clutch situations, pitchers hang curve balls for three-run doubles to lose games in the ninth and sometimes fielders perform Keystone Kops acrobatics while chasing down a blooper, they should all be replaced by video images which perform flawlessly.

With umpires replaced by some instrument, you can call it what you want, but it won’t be baseball.

Vincent Van Gogh was a loose ear.

MoCrash, can you honestly say you wouldn’t enjoy baseball more if you knew that there was absolute CONSISTENCY in the way balls and strikes are called.

Given all the elements a fatass homeplate ump has to deal with; fans, heat, humidity, glare from sun or lights, etc it’s like asking a surgeon to operate blindfolded. If the technology exists, and it does, to make the most important part of the game almost perfect, why not do it?

  35. Anonymous says:

    Stevo
    Jojo: Sources? Evidence?

  36. Anonymous says:

    MoCrash
Yes, smartman, I can honestly say that I don’t want an electronic eye in the sky calling balls and strikes and safes and outs — even if the technology exists, which I doubt. Oh, I don’t doubt there is technology to make this calls — I know there is, and the reviews are mixed. It isn’t “almost perfect” and doesn’t provide “absolute consistency” — mainly because it has difficulty with the three-dimensional aspect of the strike zone and can be effected by variety of factors, including rain and glare. There is no technology for calls in the field.

No, I’ll take the human game of baseball, with all of its faults and foibles. Players and managers do not possess “absolute consistency,” nor are they “almost perfect,” and neither are umpires. It is the human drama of the game, including its mistakes, that makes it compelling.

I’m not opposed to using replay in some situations — although not ball/strike calls — which may be invoked much like it is in football, and I wouldn’t be opposed to Selig reversing Joyce’s call and giving Galaragga his perfect game. But keep in mind that all we’re taking about in this case is a personal record, not the outcome of the game — which wasn’t effected by the call. And while personal records are nice, it is a team sport where the most important thing is team wins and losses (ask Greinke if he’d give back his 2009 Cy Young Award for a World Series ring; Zack’s a strange duck, but I don’t doubt the answer would be yes).

I’m sure Royals fans wouldn’t have minded Denkinger’s call in 1985 being reversed the next day, and Game 6 of the Series being replayed from that point onward. After all, two years earlier Kansas City benefited from a similar Commissioner’s decision in the “pine tar” game. (Actually, as a diehard Cardinals fan, I wasn’t that upset by Denkinger’s blown call then or now; it’s part of the game, and the Cardinals did enough on their own to blow that game and the Series — although one can speculate the outcome may have been different had they gotten that out.)

Sorry, but I’m not one to demand perfection, or allow the lack thereof to lessen my appreciation of human endeavor — be it sport, art or politics.

    The Truth
Maybe I’m biased because I’ve listened for so many years to 810, but it is the hometown station. We get so into our “hometown” teams and then we listen to a bunch of guys in philadelphia telling us what makes good radio in kc….some thug from syracuse who wants to be black and some kid from maryland who can’t talk and a guy from new york who’s as big a homer as i’ve ever heard.

The fact that 810 was down for 2 hours i think just shows they are still the locally owned guys who are from kc and are the ones running it, not being backed by a conglomerate in philly to send a check.

One last thing GH: You are joking when you say the call by Denk cost the cards the Series….it was a 7 game series….not first one to touch first base….The Royals won 4 games including game 7. Orta was out at 3rd AND WAS THE ONLY OUT OF THE INNING….just so you know…
