All i can say is Mizzou is one lucky-ass school and has one lucky-ass fanbase. Has the geographic location of a university ever been so helpful in locking up a spot in the best conference in the country? Unbelievable. Well, congrats to MU as much as it hurts to say because, believe me, it does. Now will this catapult MU to the top of a conference or to a national power? No way. Football-wise you’re coach is going to have to re-learn how to recruit the upper midwest and play a much tougher schedule compared to the B12 North. Maybe it’s just wishful thinking, but i don’t think this move will shake out well for MU athletics. On the other hand, Nebraska football might come up quicker than anyone expects. They play a Big 10 style already and have committed to defense, not to mention the Pelinis are from Youngstown, OH. This is going to be the best thing to happen to UNL football in a long time.
I’m terrified to see what happens to Kansas. they have to find a way to stay relevant enough and on TV enough to not lose focus on their basketball program. I don’t see the B10’s propsosed teams to add as a game-changer for basketball. That needs to be KU’s focus. Let the football chips fall where they may.

Keitzman also kept mentioning that the Big 10 would be drawn to Mizzou in order to put its TV network in more homes. I don’t know about St. Louis, but, the Big 10 network has been on my cable system in KC for what seems like two years. Maybe he meant to say “make the Big 10 network more relevant/popular/watched” but, it has been in KC for quite some time.

I’ve had my doubts about the Big 10’s status as “the best conference in the country” since they added an 11th team. I mean, what’s the quality of math taught at those schools?

How do I hate thee KK? Let me count the ways! Douchebag, liar, jagoff, hack. So much for integrity and credibility, not that KK has been accused of having those attributes lately. It’s not earth shattering news. The rumor has been out there for so long that it’s almost fait accompli.

It will be a great day in the State of Missouri when KU and KSU have to merge. Maybe they can join the new WHACK Conference!

Hell, just consolidate both schools on the Sprint Campus and say FU to Lawrence and Manhattan.

At least you’ll still have NEBRASKA Furniture Mart and the Wizards on your side of the state line.

YEEEHAAA! I hope kk is right. After listening
to these hillbilly ku and ksu fans all these
years its time MU got away from this hayseed
    midwest mentality.

Guys like Stevo should be on that tv show
“YOU ARE DUMBER THAN A THIRD GRADER”
He’s still trying to figure this whole thing out. Had he taken a few minutes to read my
comments on this subject he would have realized
that this is not about strictly athletics.
As a faithful MU alumni (and yes it’s hard to
continue to have faith in our teams…but believe that our university is superior to
almost all the big 12 in other more important
areas) I’ve talked with many other alumni.
The big 12 has treated us like crap. The
fiasco with the bcs bowl that perkins bribed
the bowl to take. Last years snubbing during
bowl selection. Other programs that the big 12
has shortchanged mu in (too long to go into)
and the fact that MU felt that the future is not in the big 12 but tied into a “super league”
    and the big 10.
But money is the key here. Forget about football or basektball or how we’ll fare in recruiting
or playing michigan in ann arbor it’s still about money.
If you’ve read the paper (or the internet in
Hearnes case) you know that state budgets are
deep in the red. Education budgets are being
slashed. Kansas is 400 million in the red.
MU felt that the extra revenue and the tie
to academically superior schools would raise
their prestige and their revenues…and it
    will.
After paying the big 9 their penalty MU willbe
getting an extra 10 million dollars starting
    day one.
Take a map of the nation and circle the area
of the big 12 and notice how many huge media
markets and huge population centers are in there. By adding the 4 schools mentioned…the
big 10 schools cover a potential of 40 million
tv houselholds. (plus the advantage of notre
dame with a national audience that has reached
as high as 6 million viewers). With their
tv package that should add an extra 4-6 million
dollars per school. Tie that into the ancilliary
income that come from this super league and
overall just by moving MU is looking at
an extra 20 million per year. MU proably enlarges its stadium to 75-80K and thats
    bigger money.
That’s the start. The big 10 has that
consortium of schools that gets huge grants
and research money. MU has been waiting to
use money to increase and improve facilities and
build a nationally recognized university in
7 key areas. There’s nothing like this in the
big 12. The money is there. MU is now about to
explode onto the national scene with some of the
most innovative and high tech research and
developement projects which will bring in
millions of extra dollars. No big 12 school
offers this…no big 12 school even has this
vision. Watch for mu to become one of the finest
academic and research centers in the nation…
    and it can happen now.
To all those dirt dog KU and KSU fans who
    say “well mu can’t recruit now…they can’t
play well in basektball and football etc.”
    you idiots need to stfu.
    1. Football: “MU can’t recruit in Texas
anymore”. Yes MU has done well in texas but
they still only get 3rd tier athletes. everyone
knows the top ones go to texas/oklahoma/and other
texas schools. MU’s top players last year from
texas were 2 star recruit shawn weatherspoon
(a #1 draft pick) and danario alexander A BARELY
2 star recruit from texas. As hard as it is
to realize MU will do fine. Will they be a top
10-20 football school…possibly if the players
reach their potential…but that’s not all that
    counts. Look at northwestern…indiana…michigan…hardly
football powerhouses but they are considered some
of the top educational institutions in the nation.
    BASKETBALL: According to one
basektball expert…MU should dovery well in the
    big 10. Big 10 schools are slow…big…
gangly…whereas mu next year with the
#6 RECRUITING CLASS in the nation and an even
beter recruiting class coming up in 2011 should
do fine. Will they win a championship…probably
not…but they will be competitive in the league
and may surprise many of you ku/ksu fans.
I hope KK is right. He’s been a reporter for
yeas and hope he’s not getting burned this
time. Probably his report created lots of chaos
across the nation in every school.
MU needs to move on. This change is dramatic
and will benefit the university 1000 times over.
And it will spell the end of big 12/9 tourney
games in kc (football/bball) at sprint.
So KU and KSU fans…good luck. If MU and NU
bolts you win the north divisioin. Have fun.
But I have a feeling this is going to impact
your bball teams more than you care to admit.
Also…I seriuosly doubt that with the expanded
format in the big 10 that ku and mu will play
once mu leaves. The “super league big 10”
will probably not want to schedule a non
conference game where both schools in the
    league don’t receive the dollars.
I hope mu leaves. Its an incredible opportunity
for the university to grow/expand and become
one of the top schools in the nation.

not being an apologist for KK, but it would be interesting if he ends up being right. It is interesting how so many people are jumping on the “he’s wrong” bandwagon, especially the schools.

“Methinks he doth protest too much” – Nick, chill out. By berating the competition, you egg people to change the dial. If you build it, they will come. Just do a better job, and people will listen to you. Morton Downey, Jr tactics only work for a very minimal amount of time…stop jabbing people and do a better job.

Big Ten (with the 11 in the logo) goes from 11 teams to 11 States, so it’s still the Big 10 (states), plus one.

The more interesting thing, should this happen, is what happens with the Big 4 and the other Small 6 left over. Make no mistake, the league is run by the South now, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see the folks go after more southern teams like TCU, SMU, and recreate the SWC. I see Colorado moving to the Mountain West or the Pac10, KState and KU can end up in the new SWC, and Iowa State is left out in the cold (I am not a Cyclone fan, just noting)

Are KU and KState going to be more distant from a BCS bowl in a league without Nebraska or Missouri? No.

Are KU and KState going to be affected in any way in March Madness if MU and NU get buried in Big 10 bball? Not hardly.

Nebraska and Missouri FIT in the Big Televen because they are the two teams with an over-inflated self-image in the Big 12 and that visage fits in the League That Time Forgot.

KK’s machinations spun the media into a frenzy (again) Monday. If Nick Wright weren’t just so damned annoying to listen to, he might have a chance. But alas, he’s just another victim of the Male Cheerleader’s schtick.

Good point about DeArmond GH. Hurts your cred if you are talking down about an ‘internet report’ when the medium of communication you are using to do to is an internet report. I don’t like either of the DeArmonds.

Sorry for JoJo, but KK reporting this may be the kiss of death for it to actually happen. JoJo kills me though- ‘MU is now about to
explode onto the national scene with some of the
most innovative and high tech research and
development projects which will bring in
    millions of extra dollars.’

HAHAHAHHAA, that will happen the day after a Pinkel-coached team stays within 4.5 touchdowns of Texas or OU. And nobody says MU can’t recruit, Pinkel recruits just fine and as long as Anderson has more NBA-caliber power forwards as nephews and the sons of his college buddy are McDonald’s all-americans, the b-ball team will be fine. It’s not the recruiting, it’s the execution. Call us when you win a Big XII title in football or make it to a Final 4.

The Big 10 ‘wants’ MU b/c it has fans in KC and St. Louis, two Top-30ish TV markets. Not for any other reason, so don’t fool yourself into thinking MU is about to burst on the scene athletically and academically IF this happens.

MU isn’t the key, the key is the South schools. If Texas, A&M, OU and Okie Lite bail somehow, then KU and K-State could be doomed. As long as those big South schools are there, the Big XII or some slightly watered down version of it will survive. Losing Nebraska would be the bigger loss.

Keitzman wins again. He issues a non-story and not only gets national attention but even has the competition mentioning him by name.

MU will do just fine in the B10, Stevo, and the Texas recruiting angle is overblown. Hate on Pinkel all you want but the guy can recruit and this move won’t change that. The Pelinis are from Youngstown? Pinkel’s from Akron. So what?

To me, as a KU homer, I thought the most critical aspect of today’s column was about KU and K-State being inextricably linked in any conference or realignment. I keep hearing people who hear people who say that someone on the Board of Regents once said that the two schools are and will be forever linked, but why has no one ever come up with a quote from a Regent, a written policy or something that clearly states that position? It seems like everyone “knows” this, but no one can prove it. Can anyone point me in the direction of actual proof (or at least evidence) that this is the position of the State of Kansas or of the Board of Regents or someone with decision-making authority?

This would be a lot easier if K-State could stand up for itself in the cold, cruel world, but I guess that they can’t and they don’t mind if the world knows it. They know that they’re an afterthought in the world of college athletics and they have to have other people make sure they don’t get left behind rather than going out and making a name for themselves such that a big conference would want them without any strings attached. A possible new motto: Kansas State, Needing Protection Like Baylor, but with a Veterinary School Instead of a Medical School.

    Greg,

Now’s a good time to compliment you on your OTC columns. They’re almost always entertaining and enlightening and informative. But after days like yesterday, I think your columns should be a must-read for ALL K.C. sports fans….unfortunately I’m doubting KC Confidential is getting a ton of eyeballs. I hope I’m wrong on that. Good job.

Nick Wright is a gutty, ballsy kid. And I love anybody who stands up to the big boys at 810. But Wright may be getting in over his head on this one. KK is obviously jumping the gun on this one, but it’s my sense that what KK says is going to happen is almost a sure thing. As annoying as KK can be, his HUGE strength is the way he reports on stories before they break. 610 got burned on the Jim Harbaugh story. If KK proves right…which I think he will….Wright’s gonna look a little silly. Wright should just shut up about the topic.

I’m intrigued by a possible Big 12-Pac 10 merger….THAT could be a good thing for the Kansas schools.

Gavin- Please provide a few recent examples of K-State not being able to stand up for itself and needing the help/protection of KU please? I too have heard the board of regents has said the two schools are linked, but never heard or read anything from a board of regents official.

  16. Anonymous says:

    Gavin
    dp-

If all this is true about K-State and KU being inextricably linked then that’s pretty much proof positive that K-State needs to be protected, isn’t it? I mean, K-State is perfectly capable of telling the Board of Regents “We’re fine. Go ahead and let KU do whatever it wants. If it wants to try and join the Big Ten, we don’t think they’ll get very far, but let them try. We don’t need to be a part of that deal. And if KU is able to work out joining the Pac-10 along with the rest of the conference, we’d love to come along, but we don’t need anyone preventing KU from joining unless we can come along too.” But does anyone really think they’ll say that? Of course not. because K-State, on its own, isn’t any more desirable to a power conference than Colorado State, Iowa State, Wyoming or any other of a number of schools with a similar profile.

All of this talk of KU and K-State being joined at the hip is not for the benefit of KU. We all must realize that, right? It’s for the benefit of K-State, so they don’t get left behind in the apparently major realignment/armageddon that is about to happen. I’m sure I’m overestimating KU’s potential value to a conference like the Big Ten, but it would be a lot easier for KU to work a deal for itself if it didn’t have to bring along K-State, don’t you think?

But is there a K-State fan anywhere who would be okay with allowing KU to go off and do its own thing without bringing KSU along? No matter how much K-State fans hate it and resist admitting it, they have to have KU act as their protector.

I have two sources inside the Union Broadcasting building, one is a very good friend who works for 1510. Both separately told me this story has zero confirmation and is 100% rolling the dice speculation based on unfounded rumors. The description I was given was “run with it now and blame your source later for being wrong when it blows up in your face.”

My buddy at 1510 went on to tell me how many people in that UB building think Keitzman is a total douchebag, including other show hosts. A lot of guys in there are cordial to his face and laugh at him behind his back. One host in particular can’t stand him. Do the math.

KK has done what he always does which is stir up controversy and gets the jump on the competition.

Wright and Fescoe need to pay attention to their own shows and forget about KK. So far the ratings are showing that KCSP is falling further behind rather than catching up with 810 and the Royals aren’t helping them out with their performance.

I would love it if all of this fell apart and KK looked stupid but he would just say that I told you I was only 95% certain it was going to happen and act like he was right even if it doesn’t occur. He will never admit he was wrong.

Gavin, football rules this talk of realignment, and Kansas would at least have to have competed for a Big 12 Championship to warrant any kind of elite status regarding their being a desired goal of any realignment scheme that would split land grant universities. Therefore, if the powers outside the Big 12 came for anybody from the state of Kansas, they would have interest in Kansas State.

I have no doubt that KK made all this up, and if he did, it makes what everybody in the media did yesterday all the more hilarious. It’s the perfect ploy — have an unnamed source that cannot be confirmed or refuted for two months. Two months later, if MU and NU bolt – BINGO – you heard it here first. If they don’t bolt, well, forty lashes with a wet noodle for my “unnamed source.”

Ok, got it Gavin. You have no examples of K-State not being able to stand up for itself and needing the help/protection of KU. If K-State ever does throw a big stink about not being included in some re-alignment, only to be saved by the fact it’s in the same state as all-mighty KU, I’ll come back and tell you that you are right and me, along with all my fellow K-State alums, owe everything to KU and their fans and maybe even a little to the great Phog Allen Fieldhouse.

But, until then…you don’t know what you are talking about. Nice work on the ill-informed, absent of anything factual post aimed only at trying to put K-State down and make yourself feel better about being a KU homer.

  23. Anonymous says:

    Gavin
Ptolemy, 10-15 years ago you’d be absolutely right about K-State being the preferred partner if football were the driving consderation, but if you think that’s still the case (and assume that TV households in the market aren’t a factor), you’re delusional. KU has more students (and therefore more alumni), a bigger endowment, is the flagship school and has been at least the equal of K-State over the last five or so years. Add in basketball and it’s no contest.

I don’t have a problem with K-State and I hope any realignment helps preserve KU’s rivalries (with both K-State and Mizzou) but why is it that, if K-State is the desired partner, it’s everyone saying that KU can’t go anywhere without K-State and not the other way around? I promise you that Lew Perkins would like to be free to negotiate a deal free from any entaglements to K-State. can you say the same thing about John Currie?

You can say all you want that K-State is the desired partner for a big conference. You can even want it to be true. But that doesn’t make it so. But I would encourage you, if you really believe it, to contact John Currie and encourage him to publicly state that KU is free to pursue its own conference affiliation without worrying about how K-State might fare.

  24. Anonymous says:

    Gavin
dp, I was responding to Ptolemy while you were barking like a wild dog, so I didn’t get a chance to respond to you.

Look, guys, it’s very simple. If K-State doesn’t need KU then why not just publicly say that and ask the Board of Regents to free your school from KU and pursue whatever conference affiliation it wants without linking the two schools? I’m not afraid to admit that losing Nebraska and Missouri to the Big 10 will hurt KU, why are you afraid to admit that losing your mandatory tie to KU will hurt you?

Greg I think what you missed is the media outlets that credited this story. I was STUNNED at how much free press K.K. got out of this. Jack harry on 41 reported “810 reports”. Al Wallace on Fox 4 reports “810 reports”. I mean what a masterful move by K.K. Slimy but masterful. I went to bed last night thinking about how much local coverage he controls. he has Jack on his show. Him and Soren did Chiefs stuff for KCTV 5. I mean the dude is a one man media machine. All this being said…..I still can’t stand him!!!!

Should have checked back much sooner to let Jojo know how much of an idiot he is. Jojo, look: we all know you want to tout your academics at MU as a reason to get into the Big 10. Truth is it has nothing to do with it above the fact that MU’s academics meet the minimum requirements of the B10. How much better is Mizzou than KU??? LOOK AT THE U.S. NEWS AND WORLD REPORT’S LIST…THE PRE-EMINENT LIST FOR RANKING SCHOOLS IN THE UNITED STATES.
    http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/national-universities-rankings/page+5
That link will take you to page 5, where Misery is ranked the 102nd best college in the country. To see KU, you’ll have to go back to page 4 where KU is ranked 96th. That’s right! For all the greatness that you swear Mizzou has oozing out of it, they are indeed ranked behind KU on THE LIST that EVERYONE uses to judge schools. Now is it anything to brag about…being 96th on a list? No, not really but being 102nd definitely isn’t either. Why don’t you just be happy and content that a bolt of lighting has struck Columbia and brought with it an invite to a very desirable, forward-thinking conference because of your geographic location. You don’t need to feel sorry for it or rationalize why you got it. You got it and it’s going to be great for your school. In five or ten years, you’ll probably be able to make the case that MU is a “better” university than KU because of the new affiliation in the B10 and no KU fan will realy be able to argue with you. But…if KU was located in Columbia they would most certainly have the same offer on the table. You’re lucky, JOJO and that’s all! But with fuckhead moron fairweather fans like you after the Missouri spread is pissed on by Big 10 defenses and MU fans quit going to games, I bet you’ll quickly fall back to mediocre athletics…with a better research department.

Gavin? Gavin? Time to pay attention now. Kansas State is the better football program between KState and KU in terms of attractiveness to other conferences. True to fact, KU narrowed the gap a bit the past 5 years — BUT YOU RAN THE COACH THAT BROUGHT YOU EVEN!!! Football runs this deal. If it didn’t NU and MU wouldn’t even be in the discussions. Now, am I saying that KState is the equal of Nebraska in terms of national football appeal and recognition? Of course not. But we’re more appealing that Kansas on the football side of the coin.

(You see that above there, Gavin? Those are called irrefutable facts.

What the hell is a flagship program anyhow? The only thing KU is the flagship for is NCAA Tournament Faceplants.)

Ah, Stevo. You are a very, very bitter person. If Mizzou thrives athetically in this new conference it is going to eat you alive.

“If KU was located in Columbia they would most certainly have the same offer on the table.”

But it’s NOT. IT’S IN KANSAS. That’s been one of my arguments all along. You are in Kansas and because of that you’re either the butt of jokes or nobody cares!!

Paraphrasing Drew Gooden’s quote, “I’ve lived in Kansas. That’s about as bad as it gets.”

Believe me.. I lived there and know people in the know. Nebraska has always hated the Big 12. Tom Osborne has always hated the Big 12. Believe me.. Nebraska is GONE. GONE. GONE.
