If Dick Enberg should retire, it would be to open opportunities for younger talent, because he can still call a game. His smooth, effortless style, in which he can express excitement with inflection rather than volume, always goes down well. He’s not edgy or hyper, but listening to Enberg — even if visually his age is showing — remains a pleasure.

GH, got to disagree: K-State looked leg-tired from the outset of Saturday’s game. I don’t think playing Syracuse, and it’s 2-3 zone defense, took as much out of Butler as Xavier did in two OTs against the Wildcats. Of course, at this stage, champions play through the fatigue; K-State didn’t rise to that challenge.

Bill Self was merely an ornament for CBS: “Hey, we have the coach of the (defeated) No. 1 seed at our roundtable.” He added nothing insightful to the studio discussions. Self may be too nice a guy, with too little ego (relatively speaking compared to most big-time college coaches), to ever be a presence with a mike.

I think Gus J. made a few references to TEAM….on Saturday. When it gets to this point in the tourney it doesn’t matter how hard you scream and yell and how many mean stares you have…all that matters is teamwork…who is scoring off the bounce and who is scoring off the pass. This especially true coming down the stretch. Runners and teardrops will always lose to great ball movement. Final Four sets up to be a great Saturday. I’ll pick Duke over Butler.

As far as KS Athletics Inc……move along kids nothing to see here. Do we really want to see how they make the sausage?

Hey Greg….no mention of the screw job Baylor got from the refs in their game? That charge call cost them the Final Four. Duke was finished. Then CBS realized how awful the Final Four would be if Baylor was their 4th team.

    ___

GH: The charge call was a game changer (Baylor would have gone up 5 with about 3:00 minutes left in the game) and a bad to horrific call. But I don’t buy into the Duke conspiracy theory I have heard Jack Harry and others profess. Sometimes the refs just screw up and this was one of those times and unfortunately for Baylor it may have cost them a place in the FF.

    MORE CRAP FROM GREG HALL….
    1. Dick Enberg: Hall of Fame. Dozens of super bowls. Loved and honored as one of the great
sports announcers ever. A voice that is the most
recognizable in america. Great insight into the
sport he’s covering. One of the biggest philanthropists in any sport…AND LITTLE GREGGIE
HALL BASHES THE GUY. Come on little greggie
…your 20 comments on your plagarized and
often dull column is a disgrace when compared to
the magnitude of what enberg has done in his
    career. jealousy.
    2. JACK HARRY: you won’t forget this guy. The
lowest rated sportcaster in the market…and
without much competition. You knocked how
enberg got his first job…what about jack
harry. He got his job right before he was to
quit when the guy above him keeled over with a
heart attack. And this guy is the worst at
    analyzing/predicting anything about sports.
He’s tired old stuff and 41 should probably put
the old guy out and bring in frank boal who at
    least has a pulse.
    3. LEW PERKINS: The underhanded/swindling
con man. You bash him for getting 4 million while you’re making $25 a column. Again…
    jealousy.
    4. BILL SELF: YOU bash the guy for his
    uh’s…ands..etc. He’s a basketball coach and
one of the classiest guys coaching today. You
hammer him for his stuttering. What do you do….kick people in wheelchairs? Hall…what kind of person are you? You have no decency for knocking someone like that.
    5. Did you notice self’s look at the commentator
to his right who said the “villanova win in the
ncaa tournament was like Northern Iowa beating
Kansas”. I thought bill was going to scream
    at him.
    Now…lets finalize this season.
KU: Arrogance and lack of intensity killed the
hawks. Probably the best team they’ve had.
But they rested on their laurels and headlines.
KSU: spectacular run. Almost equal to the elite
8 run by MU last year. Frank Martin is the
man. NO tears…no frown…just owning up to the fact that the other team beat them that
    day.
MU: Down year. Hopefully Anderson will notice that almost no other team in the final 4/8/16/32 plays the “40 minutes of heck” defense. It might work for slow/dumb teams but to get into the
higher echolon of college bball it’s not going
to work. He’s got 2 great scorers coming in
this next year…they should improve but until
he lets his guys get some shots they will be
a sub par bball team in the big 12..maybe soon
    in the big 10.
BUT LISTEN UP ALL YOU KU AND KSU FANS…
BBALL IS OVER. SPRING PRACTICE IS HERE. GABBERT
AND MU ARE LOOKING SHARP AND READY TO KICK YOUR
ASS. GABBERT HAS SOME INCREDIBLE RECEIVERS
AND THE OFFENSIVE LINE IS BIGGER AND STRONGER
THAN EVER. THE D IS GETTING BETTER (WE HOPE!)
BUT GET READY BECAUSE COME THIS FALL IT’S
BACK TO THE REAL MONEY SPORT…THE BIG TIME
SPORT IN AMERICA…..AND YOU BETTER GET READY
TO GET YOUR ASS KICKED HARD IN 2010.
    Otherwise…have a nice easter!

It’s not what happens to you. It’s how you respond. Next season will tell us a whole lot about Frank Martin.
As I predicted, Big XII BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. Until BIG XII teams learn how to play smarter and tougher in the tourney it’s going to be a while before we see another champion.

Have to disagree on the KState being tired angle. Hell, I was tired and all I did was watch the game on Thursday night. My awake/sleep hours were unchanged from my normal routine. There is indeed something to be said for emotional fatigue affecting you mentally and physically. Having the NCAA move the game to later in the day would have had no effect either. 10 of the last 11 teams that have played OT games in the tourney’s weekend 2-game format have lost the subsequent game. KState was doomed when the Xavier game went to double OT.

I think K-State is getting off too easy. They had the Final Four right in front of them. Syracuse had lost and they were 15 points ahead of Xavier early in the first half of the Sweet 16 game. Yes it was a classic, but K-State should have taken care of business.

IMO, K-State couldn’t handle the favorites role. I noted KK’s show on Friday was simply a sickening tribute to a coming Final Four team. His lackey Curtis (the Bob Gretz of K-State sports) Kitschen and KK could not fathom K-State losing, that’s when I knew that K-State was in trouble. They are not Duke, UNC, Kentucky, Kansas, et al. They have to earn everything. Don’t misunderstand I love Frank Martin and they had a great team and run. However, K-State was always a better team with a chip on their shoulder. When they got comfortable (Xavier and Butler) is when they had problems.

UCONN women are great. Unwatchable, but great. The better teams always get the calls. As a Kansas fan, we’ve gotten our share of calls but that happens. Michael Jordan got the calls. But that charging call may have been the single worst call I have seen in my life!

As far as K-State being tired . . . Hell when I was 21-23 I could run up and down for 3 days. You mean to say these guys couldn’t do it for 3 hours, take a day off, and then do it again? I admit they did look a little fatigued, but I truly believe part of that is mental. Everyone tells them they are going to be tired and they don’t deal with it. It’s not like they are chopping logs or working the docks for 10 hours. Don’t buy the tired effect. You have to be able to get over the tired effect, like in the half-marathon. 90% of charge calls in ncaa basketball are blocks on replay. the baylor one was no worse than what we see every game.

JOJO…I’d love to hear your logic on how MU’s elite 8 run was more impressive than KSU’s. This should be real good and will likely start out with what a f-head I am.
Fatigue was definitely a factor, Greg. I thought you’d be the first to point that out! If you don’t want to call it fatigue, you have to call it something. I did think K-State was going to run into a game like this where Pullen and Clemente wouldn’t make ALL the shots and they would lose and it wouldn’t look too shocking. That’s exactly what happened. W/o Pullen performing on a Xavier-game type level, KSU wasn’t going to win.
For all the praise heaped on Frank Martin…and he does deserve a lot of it…he had no clue what to do in that second half. It was unconscionable that Curtis Kelly not touch the ball on most if not all possessions. He was the only player on KSU who Butler couldn’t smother in defense. He was a total matchup nightmare for Butler and plainly showed this to everyone watching the game in the first half. What game was Frank watching?
50 cops extra in Manhattan? What were they expecting the great white riots of 2010?
Is there anything worse than people like Dave Bliss who abandon all their moral and ethical duties when in leadership positions, then want profit from what they’ve learned from being a sleazeball years later? The guy has apologized to the coaches assn. but not Dennehy’s parents? I’m not saying he was most responsible for the kid’s death but he sure didn’t do anything to prevent it. Sleazeball.

Hey Greg. Nice work in the half marthon. you kicked some butt, for an old guy.
I was out riding the course on my bike. what a crap day.

    ___

GH: It started raining about 10 minutes before the race and never stopped. Some of the downpours were pretty intense. I didn’t run into any hail but I heard some runners got dinged. Imagine running 13 miles and getting hailed on! I was going to try and get to my truck before the race to get a visor to wear but I parked on the east side of Ward Parkway and there were just too many people to get through and get back in time. So I ran w/o a lid and got drenched. Good event though despite the deluge.

  30. Anonymous says:

    Stevo
Yeah I see your point Cliffy. I was probably thinking in my head that the impressiveness of the Xavier win and the margin over BYU was better than any Mizzou win from last year, but from a who-played-who perspective Mizzou’s run was definitely superior. I forgot they beat Memphis. Hell, they get an extra cookie for beating Calipari in my book.
Congratulations Cole! It’s hard not to like him and I hope he continues to improve on the next level. Good job on making the CORRECT decision. There’s a very decent chance he could develop an above average turn-around game, he’ll knock down his free throws and his potential on the defensive end is off-the-charts. Cole you are going to be a very, very rich man in ten years.

And remember…(for you ku fans) MU actually

Mike Anderson really had no talent. His

But then there was no kcc to sound the horns
for mu…no on air guy to blow the wins out
of proportion…no one in kc really talking about
    mu’s elite 8 run.
It was impressive…but here in kc where theeres
    100,000 ksu alumni…and 2 million basketball
fans (most on the kansas side) it wasn
‘t as big as ksu’s run. And most importantly
they beat calipari the con mans team to get
    there.
    Both were great runs.
Now…lets talk football and the ass kicking
ksu and ku are soon going to face.
YOU PEOPLE HAVE TO WAIT A YEAR TO GET ANOTHER

Oh one more thing about the Dave Bliss thing Greg…It seems like, whether it’s warranted or not, that all the coaches in this league think Scott Drew is dirty. KK was talking about it kind of vaguely last week and I wanted to hear what you thought about why all the other Big 12 coaches seem to hate this guy. Also, what would happen to Baylor’s program if Drew got hemmed up on major violations? They might just quit playing basketball!

    ___

GH: I don’t think the other coaches dislike Drew because he’s dirty or doing anything illegal. What has them pissed about Drew is that he recruits negatively

Scott Drew is not dirty. It is just that the only other coach on this planet he gives a crap about is his dad. I’m sure, as a young lad in Indiana, all he ever heard.. “Knight sucks, Keady Sucks, Phelps sucks, Crum Sucks, Henson sucks, Smith sucks… etc etc” The guy just does not care about being Bill Self’s friend, or anyone else’s friend. He just wants to win.

  41. Anonymous says:

    Stevo
No way Rainbow Man there’s more to it than that. There has to be. You can read in between the lines from any coach on what they say about Baylor, other coaches, on conference calls…they do not like this guy for a reason. I’ve heard the negative recruiting theory before Greg and that probably is it. There’s a ton of coaches that are jerks and that don’t kiss ass to the more senior coaches but they’re still civil to each other. It almost seems like Drew’s name is a dirty word for the other Big 12 coaches…and negative recruiting is probably the reason. I don’t think Bill Self enjoyed asking his question of Drew during the CBS pregame haha.

Self’s record against 7 seeds or better:

    (at kansas): 3-3

Self’s kU teams have played 7 seeded or higher teams 6 out of 21 games played.

it’s amazing how one title erases 3 horrible losses. Without that title fans would be up in arms calling for his head.
Personally I would like to see him go as during the regular season when the games don’t matter he is nails.

Also, glad to see K-State has come back to reality. Not sure why all the hype….KState goes to elite 8 = Powerhouse, Mizzou does it last year = Lucky. Mizzou had a better conference and overall record last year. Mizzou was challenged and defeated a 2 seed in the tourny. KSU beat a lower ranked and much lower seed in 2 OT’s. It’s clear to me who had the better run the past two years.
