That was a great interview and good job of getting your reaction up here so quick Greg. I thought his response to the CJ question was funny. There’s the door, young man. It doesn’t matter if he stays or not since he’s not on scholarship. It is now more important than ever to sign Lamb. KU needs a victory before November and this would be a huge one.

Not Lamb, though he would be nice too. Selby…it’s big to sign Selby.

Kudos to Petro for getting the interview and for GH for quickly covering it here, but I switched over to 980 after the first couple of questions because there is nothing to hear. You can predict every single answer Self offered. You can apply the same answers to almost every question asked of a coach or player. Gottleib’s segment was way more interesting. I’m in favor or avoiding player-coach interviews altogether (unless Neilbonics are in-play, of course). They are where they are because they can play or coach — not analyze and talk. Those who are talkers/analyzers for their livings are much more compelling and worthy of our valuable listening time.

I hope this ends all the talk about how you hate 810. You give credit when credit is due no matter past history. GREAT job Greg.

Keitzman is gonna be pissed. Props to Soren! Props to you too Greg for posting so quickly.
Good to see Coach Self getting back in the saddle. With that interview in the can he can pretty much avoid the media for a while.

Wasn’t Self also on 610 this morning? Heard Fescoe promoting it. But never heard since I actually don’t listen that often.

Petro is a very good interviewer and a very hard worker, and it took both for this score. He’s at his best when asking questions, not on a rant and not defending his own positions to a contentious caller.

I’m contunually impressed with Bill Self. If he sounded like a coach, well, he’s a coaching lifer. What the hell would you expect, Robin Williams? I’ve interviewed thousands of coaches over 40 years, and Self has always struck me as being true to his philosophy — hence likely to give familiar answers to familiar questions. Just like players have good games and bad, so do even the best of coaches or managers. What Self has done is suck it up, stand up and say he could have done a better job and explain why he made the decisions he did.

I like Gottleib, and many of the other analysts and regulars on 610, but given the chance to hear a first-person account of the No. 1 seed explain a second-round loss in the Dance, even if it’s nothing new or special I’d rather hear the guy who was in the arena. The yakkers can always enlighten me afterwards, and then I have a factual basis on which to also judge their accounts.

During Petro’s interview with Self, I projected what it may have been like had KK been asking the questions — if, indeed, they were questions. His fawning, pandering approach when interviewing real big shots is counter to Petro’s crisper style, although I much prefer KK’s extended commentaries. I don’t think there’s a sports talk host in KC who combines both elements especially well (and I’ll even include the syndicated Rome into that assertion).

At the end of the day Self has a lot more zeros in his bank account than anybody in Lawrence.
He should be doing 2 or 3 interviews a day.
Look at his peer group…Billy Donnavan Bruce Pearl John Calapari..Frank Martin..Rick Barnes…Rick Pitino..Jim “What was the take” Calhoun…..please convince me any are worth more than 150k….I have a feeling sweeping changes will be coming for the game. More compensation for the players. I say let the high schoolers go pro. 1 and done is not what NCAA should be about.

MoCrash…who are you? Maybe I’m the only one in the dark here but 1000 is a lot of coaches!

I’m with Ptolemy on this one … yawn. Nice get by Petro, I guess, but coaches interviews are practically always boring. Didn’t Self have a news conference this morning? Did he tell Petro anything new?

Bill Self is a stud. There is no better coach for KU. And I agree about the post-game blubbering by some coaches (like a previous one at KU). They need to grow up.

kk is an a-hole. Did you hear him talk about frank martin this afteronoon. As if martin
was the greatest coach in basketball history…
    the greatest coach ever.
I like martin but he’s a long way from guys
    like self…anderson…barnes….hell this guy
got his team to the final 16 ONE YEAR AND
KK MAKES HIM OUT TO BE THE GREATEST COACH IN
    ]THE BIG 12…NCAA!
Martin has some talent but how much came there
    when he was the coach.
    Sorry…anderson got a elite 8 team last year…
and kk never made him out to be a god like this
    martin guy.
Its nice vthat martin has had success…but
lets get real…when he wins something…anything then we can talk about
    him being a good coach.
Listening to kk the blow job king you’d think
martin won more titles than john wooden.

Bschloz– I do not normally call people out on here but you say these coaches are barely worth 150K? You have obviously never worked under a commission structure… They are worth what the market will pay them. While a lot of people making 150K are watching Celebrity Apprentice– I guarantee these guys are packing for their 5 am flight to spend an 18 hour day recruiting in ghetto USA, answering stipid calls from AD’s, and still attending the rubber chicken dinner for the Salina Kiwanis Club instead of celebrating their anniversary with their wives.

Good point rainbow man. It would be very hard to put a $ amount on what Bill Self actually is worth at KU…but it was worth it to build all the new facilities on top of paying him what they do. Coaching at a high profile like Kansas is NOT a thankless job, of course, but it takes someone pretty unique to be under the microscope ALL the time, to recruit nearly year round, to be the face of your program…and those are just SOME of the duties that all come after winning games. Bill Self (and a lot of other coaches)are clueless.
Frank Martin is on a roll and I’m not saying this is going to happen…but if he loses it for a quick minute and hits a player, say a little bit more than the love tap this year, he could be gone that quick and we’d be talking about his meteoric fall after the meteoric rise. I’m not saying that knock him at all. In this hyper-sensitive and highly reported sports world he could get run the next time he does something like that.

I heard KK say yesterday “It would be too easy for me to come on here and talk about KU’s loss and how much shocking it was”

He then followed that comment with “So what I’g going to do is provide a complete 180 point of view on this subject for you, are you ready? Here it is…”

And his idea of not talking about KU was…

“This is the first time in 21 years that Kansas State has been alive in the NCAA tournament after KU has been eliminated. TWENTY ONE YEARS!”

Well that was some horrible typing and syntax on my part. Here’s an amusing Tim Tebow story to make up for it:

Sevo, I’ve been a broadcast and/or print journalist since 1970. Although I haven’t made an official count of the number of coaches I’ve interviewed, I’d say a thousand wouldn’t be too far off the mark.

KK hasn’t had a whole lot to brag about in recent years, so his Martin pumping is to be expected. I’ve stated it here before, but I thought Martin’s hiring was a joke. I’ve changed my mind. He obviously can coach and the media loves him. It can all change very quickly, of course, as in KSU getting spanked by Xavier or Martin doing something stupid.

My question is if he can keep the recruits coming if Dalonte (sp?) Hill leaves.

Dexter its great to know the courage Tim has in face of adversity. My guess is Mr Shut The F*** Up wouldn’t of said that to Tony Dungy when he suggested the same thing. One man was brave. The other had a mob mentality where his courage will only be shown when 90% of the group agrees with him. I doubt if Tim will be a good football player. Its apparent he is already a good man.

  28. Anonymous says:

    Cliffy
I doubt Tony Dungy would ask a room full of strangers to pray with him. Don’t force your beliefs on others … it’s as simple as that.

    Rainbow—How does that saying go
    Those that can do
    Those that can’t teach
Those that can’t teach, teach gym.
KU won 50 league titles before coach Self.
I’m not saying he isn’t a great coach…just saying no way is he worth 3 million in salary.
    LOL…think about it.
Tough recruiting?…come on I’ve read your commentary for months you know whats going on…
There’s no work, no secrets just run it thru Sonny Vaccaro. His biggest obstacle in recruiting is not having enough basketballs and PT.
Is losing 6 or 7 hoops games a year and making a legitimate run in postseason not good enough? Do we need to aspire to be like KY UCONN. Hope not.
Front row seats for Porno Stars…Black Market ticket economy…hey the fun never stops

And I’m curious….how is ASKING a room full of strangers to pray with you forcing your beliefs on anyone? So Cliffy do you go off when the waitress asks you if you want a cup of coffee. (Bit*h don’t be trying to push coffee on me!!!) When the bag boy asks paper or plastic? It is just so weird how people are sensitive about God and religious related issues. I can be in line with you and ask should I get a big mac or quarter pounder and you wouldn’t think anything of. But if I said “Hey dude, you going to church this week you’d sh*t your pants. Doesn’t make sense.

And YES Tony Dungy and many other coach’s or sometimes the team Chaplin will ASK players IF they want to pray. It ain’t no thing. Just say NO.

It’s amazing. We are more ok with people pushing alcohol or drugs on our kids. But hey if someone PUSHES God…..we’re calling the school and our attorney. Just bizarre.
