Star Search: Rent-a-Rod, New NFL Sudden Death Rules, Pets & Couch Potatoes

Got Health Care news coverage?

Who doesn’t? It’s hard to argue with the new health care bill as the top story on today’s front page. Then again, it’s also hard to imagine anyone other than the most feeble, clued out subscribers requiring this heavy a dose of ubiquitous, day-old news.

A couple nice pet stories today – if you like pet stories – and lots of people do. But is this why readers buy a newspaper?

Local: Enormous spending cuts or new taxes? That seems to be the question where Kansas $470 million budget shortfall is concerned. Whether to increase the state sales tax and taxes on cigarettes, tobacco and eliminate sales tax exemptions and/or implement cuts to state agencies (including public schools and social services).

*** Never would have thought of it, but an unnamed dude offed himself Sundayat Overland Park shooting range, the Bullet Hole. Seems the B Hole – which bills it self as “the largest indoor shooting range in the world” – is a convenient place to check out. No gun to buy, no waiting period, just rent-a-rod and go-see-god.

“In 1997, three people killed themselves at the Bullet Hole with guns they rented there,” the Star reports.

The Bullet Hole does not have the largest indoor shooting range in the world. Probably not even in the Top 50. I used to go The Bullet Hole and Show Me Shooters regularly to “punch paper”. I know that 99.9999% of the people that go to either range are responsible gun owners. Many take their children or spouses to teach them responsible gun handling and shooting technique. It’s the one jagoff that might wander in that worries me. One day someone is going to decide to shoot someone else before they off themselves. Until one of these places puts up concrete walls and steel doors between each shooting booth I won’t go back.

Re the Bullet Hole, you may notice that I wrote that it “bills itself” as the largest. I didn’t write it like that by accident!
