Hearne: Dam Torpedos KC Radio Market

As party crashers go, new FM signal 103.7 The Dam ranks with the best…

From out of nowhere, the local active (as in hard) rock station crashed onto local airwaves last week – burning hard, loose and clean. With a leprechaun

Challenge Dare and 98.9 in any way….not likely and frankly not possible…Dare is the biggest name in KC media, period, that includes anyone on tv…sorry Larry…so that said..an underground station with no ads and no hype playing music that is limited at best…good luck.

It may have a nitch market and thats fine, but first lets see if they survive a year, there have been countless attempts at Dare and failed, and failed hard, even Bob and Tom show a national big name with big name guests got smashed by Dare and 98.9, the others didn’t even do that well. Like the Planet, and so on.

98.9 has about five concerts a year, thye all sell out including Rockfest which in just a week announced only on the Rock is nearly sold out with 50,000 plus people, nobody in kc, or in the nation has a one day outdoor concert that big. Enough said.

What goes up must come down. Not a matter of if but when. KC’s radio history is littered with talent deemed too big to fail. Even the Roman Generals returning from victory in battle had peasants in their chariots whispering in their ear, “all glory is fleeting”. Johnny’s day will come when he gets tossed on the scrapheap of life like a used condom.

If I understand correctly, KCFX will get the ratings bump for any PPM listenership this translator gets. Pretty smart for a very moderate investment. We’ll see if it works. At least they’re trying.

No doubt you can’t stay number one forever, but if Dare’s run ended tomorrow he would be far from a condom trash heap. He is wealthy and has his money saved. It is highly unlikely that anyone will ever challenge what he did in l5 years of being number one here and counting.

Agreed, and that includes of course the douche bag Randy Miller. Glad that little bearded freak is history.

    Just what we need
God forbid this town ever get a decent radio station.

You mean now I have 2 stations to choose from to get my morning dumbfuck talk show and my afternoon fix of nickelback and post “and justice for all” ‘tallica.

The closest we ever came to decent radio in this area was 105.9 in lawrence from 1990-1993.

Excuse me, I have to go make my bi-annual donation to KCUR.

    Dare is creepy
Dare is too old for what he does. It is kind of creepy the way he trys to act young and cool. He is in his 50s now, time to hang it up.

We’ll see if Johnny has saved up enough cash to make it through the rest of his life in the style to which he has become accustomed. He is a little long in the tooth to be doing what he’s doing. He never developed a political edge that would give him some cred with the AARP crowd like Howard Stern or even Don Imus. He never really established himself as a BRAND in a way that would give him some post radio legs. His voiceover work on the FULL THROTTLE SALOON tv gig was pretty underwhelming. It will be interesting to watch what happens when his time is up.

Man and thought you folks were down on me…Hey I have worked with Johnny Dare for l5 years…he and I have had our ups and downs…so I am not kissin ass here…I do his show at least once a week and have all that time…what makes him the star he is are three things..One: He interviews top national talent daily from Mel Gibson to Larry the Cable Guy and so on…no other radio talk show host has that opportunity daily…not only cause of his huge ratings, but he has a reputation even in the highest levels in Hollywood of being damn good at it, and the stars like him, his show, and the result…Two: He has loyal listeners beyond what anyone has done here, ever, far more than Mike Murphy did in the last couple decades…he gets and is on their level of the ‘working class’ and KC is largely just that, middle class, blue collar, you get it….he is their hero and has been, by the way Johnny is just over 40, I am the one over 50 not him…Johnny stays in amazing shape, works out daily, runs five miles daily and always diets, he looks much younger than he is, cause he works at it, by the way Howard Stern is around 60 and look at his numbers and career…its how you handle it…Johnny is drug free, doesn’t drink much, doesn’t smoke anymore, he is a healthy guy…enough on that…Three: His production Mgr. PD, Bob Edwards has come in several years back and made the show even better with massive hit concerts at a price, that all sell out, they have to push metal and rock which is depleted but they make it work…

Like I said nothing lasts forever, not even ‘flower pot bread’ but Dare has done the best of any KC jock of all time…give the man credit…

C’mon Craig, we’re just keepin it real.

Johnny is a big fish in a little pond. He has no credible competition. Just like Don Fortune before KK showed up. No one wants to pay up for talent to compete with him since there is no real ROI (profit) after you get into advertising rate wars.

He’s got a large blue collar male demo but they aren’t the most coveted audience these days.

Johnny is the Kevin Kietzman of rock. If he was a real ROCKSTAR DJ he woulda been out of here long ago, either to a bigger market or to MTV or VH1

So yeah, I’ll give him props for making a good living and doing his thing in KC but I sure as hell am not impressed with him. I listen to a lot of local market radio on the internet and there are lots of people far more intelligent and insightful than Johnny who can make you bang your head and get you to think about serious issues at the same time.

    UUmmm Flower pot bread
I still have VERY fond memories of flower pot bread, ummmmmmm whne one was feeling the long island teas a nice warm flower pot bread was juts the ticket.

but back on topic, Dare is too old to be doing the same old schtick, his days are numbered.

It should be pretty easy – if they want to outperform the Rock or the Buzz, they just need to tell their DJ’s to shut the hell up and play music.

I don’t think the Dam is out to steal away listeners from the Rock. I think they plan to bring back the droves of listeners who abandoned KC radio due to a lack of decent (and frequent) music.

The Rock only plays Metallica, Ozzy and Nickelback all day long. Not hard to best that by just adding a little variety and putting some tape over their DJ’s mouths.
