no way ku wins it all. Collins is tired and
worn out.Cole can’t get his game together and
he’s going to have to face some guys his size
for the first time this year. They really
arent that deep but they probably get to the
elite eight or final four but they don’t win
    it all.
K state…still believe they are overrated.
I can’t see them going deep but since franky
martin is my favorite coach it would be
spectacular to see him coaching in the finals
and for america to see the “soprano” coaching
    squad on national tv.
MU…well being an mu fan you need to get a
large prescription of anti depressants and
mood enhancers. When you think its good..things
go bad…when its going bad..boom they do something good. We’re waiting for the football
season and a top 5 ranking and next years
basektball recruits to come in and bring back
some good times on the bball court.
Still great time of year. Royals/NFL
draft…this time of year…HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL
    FOR EVERYONE…EVEN US MU FANS!

I remember that feeling in ’97 when KU lost and I have really never let myself get THAT emotionally attached to a team since. Oh sure, I watch every KU game but I don’t live and die through them anymore because I know more often than not, the end comes with a loss, like it does for all but one. As a sports fan, that was the biggest kick in the nuts I have every been a part of.

I have to say that this year’s Texas team reminds me a lot of Arizona in 97. I think that Zona team went 19-11, finished mid-pack in the Pac-10 and were considered underachievers all year. Now, Texas’ collapse has been more pronounced but I still think they may have some fight left. Either that, or wishful thinking they will take out UK early.

    Hey Greg,

Any chance you can set up a OTC tournament bracket group on Yahoo or ESPN? Would be curious to see the picks of that group.

GH: I like this idea, Glow. Here’s the link:

This is the first sports elite program for the KC area, if KU wins it all, thus two titles in three years. This area has never had that, ever. Though KU has always been a strong program, nobody ever said it was THE PROGRAM. Now they will. Of course the Chiefs and Royals were never close to that. Ever. Even with Super Bowl and World Series wins, their time on top was short lived. KU is now on verge of being a dynasty. Cool. Finally someone from here.

Bill Self is a good person and the best coach KC area has had since Hank Stram, in any sport from here. Thank you Bill and next year KU will also be a top notch team.

Good call on Doug Gottlieb. I’d prefer Rich Zvosek over Knight as well.

Sundvold’s knowledge is decent, but I find him boring.

That ’97 Arizona team is the perfect example of why people love the NCAA Tournament. Arizona nearly lost their first 2 games against 12 and 13 seeds, held on to beat #1 KU, won in OT in the Elite 8 game, then won 2 more for the Championship.

As a Kansas fan, my only wish is that the Jayhawks don’t run into this year’s buzz-saw.

GH, since you like talking about commercials, it’s too bad you missed the tv coverage of the Big 12 tournament because those of us at home got to see the same 5 commercials over and over and over and over until we wanted to puke. They shoved them down our throats repeatedly and mercilessly like some kind of CIA mind experiment.

The annoying blond-haired geek in the green shirt filling up his car in the Phillips 66 commercial, where the gas pump keeps jumping out of his tank and he shrieks like a little girl? Yeah I saw that one about 500 times. I want to strangle that f’n guy so bad, I can feel my hands squeezing down on his neck. I believe this is the same idiot who walks into Taco Bell and asks for Denise. I would cut Dog the Bounty Hunter a check right now if he’d gather up his posse and go find this chumpstain so we could have him incarcerated for annoying he hell out of me.

Holy Shit Greg! It’s GOODFELLAS! GOODFELLAS! Goodfellows, where in the hell did that come from? One of the greatest guy/mob movies of all time and you blow it. Back in the day when the Civella’s ran the city that kinda mistake gets you a Sicilian necktie. Capiche?

For once in his life Bryant Gumbel is right about something. Guess there is still hope for Big Sexy.

Big XII means BIG DISAPPOINTMENT in this tourney. KSU in the finals against KU? Keep that shit up and Hannibal Lecter will move to KC and eat for free for the rest of his life.

    ___

GH: Goodfellows is the Manhattan, KS version. Thanks for the fix.

Gumbles an idioy. Whoever said Jordan saved the NBA? It’s pretty universally agreed that it was Magic & Bird. And agreed on Gottlieb. Coach Z is verrrrrry borrrring. Gottlieb has strong opinions and knowledge! And a particular knowledge and interest in the Big 12. That’s what we need. KK would never suggest Gottlieb as he is a guest on Petro’s show. Not gonna come outta KK’s mouth.

Greg, what do you think the Nick Wright moving to the 2-6 spot? Personally I give him the rest of the year until he’s fired.

    ___

GH: Word is that 610 Sports will announce that Nick Wright is getting the afternoon spot starting on Opening Day. I hear that Nick doesn’t want to start his show at 2 PM because he doesn’t want to go up against KK’s monologue. If Nick gets the gig (and I think he will) I expect him to get a decent shot at improving the show

Boy Greg, is Hearne gonna be pissed about you giving all the kudos to the Star coverage of the tourney.
    But you’re right.

Normally I avoid cliches like the plague, but it depends on which Missouri team shows up. They can be very good but they can also be very bad.

I don’t see K-State getting out of the Elite Eight. Three games into the tournament they’ll no longer be a relative unknown. Coaches will know they’re soft at the post and depend on hot-shot guards.

It would be great for K-State, Kansas (the school and the state), and the Big 12 if the ‘Cats and ‘Hawks met in the Final Four but I just don’t see that happening.

But thanks to DonkeyPunch, I have drawn up a new bracket, with Beaver College joining the ranks of the Killer B’s against Kansas.

    Think of the ratings potential!

Draw schmaw!!!! Who cares who we play ,,BRING EM ON!!!!
KU IS IS GOING TO KICK ASS!!!
We are going to win this whole mthrfkr!!!

We are the best team ……. but if we dont win, if something goes wrong, it WILL NOT scar me or make me like them or the game less….

Not winning is (sometimes) part of the fking deal, if you can not take it, then take up knitting you pussies.

To EXPECT/DEMAND your team to win it all ….. and cry like bitch if they lose is lame as fk.

NEVER discount that there are other really good teams out there. Kentucky and Syracuse and other teams are good teams, and if KU has an off day, and the other guys are hitting threes while we dont, well
….. that is why they play the game.

By gosh, why dont you just watch for fun, see what happens, and stop bitching.
It is not as if you were the one who did the all the actual work. JUST SUPPORT YOUR TEAM, and be just happy you are not a UCLA OR UNC fan ….

As far as brackets etc etc, I am playing one, it is free to enter, and you could win a million dollars. i am NOPT associated with it in, I juts found it.

    http://kansascity.collegebasketball.upickem.net/collegebasketball/brackets/mens/1.asp

The cool thing is after you make you picks, you can print out your bracket, and then they are supposed to give you live stats, as it goes on. I do it for fun, and this is all VERY FUN …. YIPPEEEE!!!
KU IS GOING TO WIN IT ALL!!! AGAIN!!!

As a KC Star basher myself, I’ve always said the sports page has been consistently good for a decade. the KU coverage is quite good, but over the years the Star has been soft on KSU (prince contract debacle, player crimes in 90s) and MU (STL papers killed the star on Ricky Clemons saga). Still pretty good beat writers.

For the star to have such nationally known columnists in JoPoz and Whitlock is remarkable. Even the Royals coverage has been solid since Dick Kaegel left. Chiefs coverage has been good for years.

It’s the publisher and edit board that ruin the product. Duiguid… ugh! Any wives of publishers get any DUIs lately?

Utah … that’s hilarious. Was Star coverage NOT soft on:

-Academic fraud in KU’s football program
-Darrell Arthur never graduating from high school
-Collins wagging his weenie on the elevator

The list could go on ….

It’s amazing how Bryant Gumbel can go from the absolutely laughable worst NFL play-by-play guy of all time to what he does on Real Sports. He may rub some the wrong way and he seems as cocky as many of the athletes he talk about, but man he can do an interview. He’ll ask any question to any person and call their bullshit if that’s all they have to offer. He’s usually really spot on in his monologue too at the end of the show. Really like that show and I’ve become a BG fan when I was completely the other way on him just a few years ago.

GH is right. I have never been a KU, MU and KSU fan at the same time like I am right now. They are all very unique teams. I predict that possibly for the first time in history, KU fans and KSU fans will actually be rooting for each other in Oklahoma City.

nice call, I wdwont wanna admit it, but yeah, it is hard to not like that crazy KSU coach and his team. The way he allowed his kids(players) to make fun of his mannerisms on TV the other night, in the middle of the Big 12 Championship, was great stuff.

For all the K-State kool-aid-drinkers…I hope you can get to Sweet 16 or Elite Eight. Remember you have ONE NCAA tourney win since the 1988 team…ONE!!!
