Star Search: Thumbs Up to FYI & the Case of the Missing Correction

Don’t look now but the weekend is approaching…

Today’s paper feels just about right, coming in from the driveway. But after you remove the Sports section and ad inserts, it feels more like News Light again.

Not that everyone is going to write off sports. But aside from its columnist offerings – mainly Whitlock – there doesn’t appear to be much more there than one can glean from combing the Worldwide Web the day or night before. Maybe it’s me – cause I’ve kinda gone from being s fairly sports intensive guy to doesn’t interest me much. Still it seems like most of the content in sports is filler. If somebody truly cares that much about the stats and trivia, it’s hard to imagine them waiting an extra day for the Star to get their fix.

I’ll commence today’s exhumation of the Star with the FYI Weekend Preview.

The cover story about musicians who perform in local theater is kind of a nice touch. Not going to appeal to a great many locals outside of the people being written up, their friends, families and theater insiders but…

The weekend

Perhaps you are in too big of a hurry when you are typing this Star-hating drivel, but you comment on the Sanchez commentary caught my eye:

    “I don

Wow, the Attack of the Thin-skins! Hey, if you’re really that passionate, why not sign your real names? Thought so.

Hearne, I wanted to comment on you receiving 4 NFM inserts….on Sunday I received 4 Jo-Ann inserts. These materials are inserted all mechanically on what I could only guess would be brand new equipment. I don’t think that there is someone dumping inserts by hand into the paper…no way. I would say that those machines are very hard to calibrate…going from a Kohls catalog to a Cabella’s tab I’m sure is tricky. NFM plans for this and will send them 3% to 5% overage. Trust me, Box stores love The Star and The Star loves box stores.

Buddy, I totally get these posts….Its kind of funny that its making me examine the amount of time I spend with the paper and why? I guess if I really counted it would probably be about 30 mins per day x 30…so a lotta time there. The Star is a big deal.

Looking forward to your new website design. When is it coming?

Kicking the old dog again. The theme is repetitive, you used content to reference the Dave Mathews mistake. In the law, there’s a rule against trying someone twice for the same crime. Who cares if Derek eats and writes about it. He has enough integrity that if someone has a gripe about that, he will be careful and report it. And at least he is better at restaurant reviews than the late Shifra Stein, who single-handedly closed 125 restaurants by attacking their french fries!! And this is my real name! I agree with bschloz–concentrate on YOUR new website, and make it searchable, and make this comment box visible so we don’t have to stumble into it with a white cane. You might as well delete “Website” in comment section, nobody uses it, just put the box or say: start comment next line:

And make it SEARCHABLE!!~! hOW MANY TIMES do I have to tell you??

And yes this is my real name!

And yes, for the third time, this is my real name!
(See how annoying and boring that strategy is?)

I know it hurts, Hearne. But this is pathetic, even for you.

    Amen, Tracy Thomas.

Hearne, you are so much better than this. Focus on quality and not quantity. The core talent pool of you, Greg Hall, Brian McTavish, Mark Edelman, Adam Murphy, Jack Poessiger and Jennifer Janesko is enough to carry this site. All due respect to Tony Botello but he’s just a Latino version of your buddy Mike Hendricks. Plus he’s got his own gig on TKC. Larry Hovick is an entertainment production guy, a great one at that. He’s not a journalist. Let him blog on the Midland website if he’s got a writing jones to scratch. You could slide in an ocassional opinion piece from some of your other contacts. Forget about the Star, get ’em out of your head. Stop letting jojo screed and rant. I’m all for free speech but his personal attacks are unwarranted. Most of his comments don’t advance the dialog of the issues being discussed. If jojo wants to attract flies, make him use honey and not manure. He does make some valid points from time to time but they lose impact when he goes off message with the whole loser, faggot thing.

If you’re serious about monetizing your effort here you need to raise the bar.

Yeah I just noticed this week that they are no longer putting in the column in Preview on “Whats going on in KC Tonight” stage and theatre. That is really bad, people like to see what choices they have at night and who is where and when, not a great idea to drop that listing.
