How was KU to know when this schedule was put together that UCLA, Cal, Michigan, Tenessee, Temple, and Memphis were all going to have down years? Last year when the schedule came out no one was saying this was an easy schedule. When the Memphis game was lined up Coach Cal was still at Memphis and a great recruiting class was headed his way. Things change…I am sure some Mizzou fans (and KK) think Lew used his $’s and influence to weaken future KU opponents.

At channel 41 they are under a Lezak Camera Angle Alert (LCAA). Because when a big winter storm approaches the camera men are not allowed to shoot him from the waist down.

    Merry Christmas everyone!

GH: I agree that it’s not KU’s fault that these non-con teams did not prove to be as good as expected. What I find fault with is guys like Lawrence who refuse to admit their non-con schedule is weak, especially when compared to Texas’ schedule.

“How was KU to know when this schedule was put together that UCLA, Cal, Michigan, Tenessee, Temple, and Memphis were all going to have down years?”

–This is clearly not the point. No one is accusing Lew of poor scheduling. However, boasting about the superior talent you’re playing when that is clearly not the case rings hollow and sets off the bs meter.

KU has no reason to be concerned about their non-con opponents. They need to continue to play well enough to win and get ready to get serious come conference time.

Up to this point, KU schedule has been lacking. That’s just a fact. I think we will know a lot more about this team when they play ranked opponents (Temple and Tennessee) on the road before B12 play starts.

But that’s Self’s MO – build them up and get them peaking in Feb/March. That’s really when we need to worry about who is #1.

Until then, bring on the B12 regular season. Should be a fun ride for the locals.

I agree with all that, Greg, but has CJ ever said he is unhappy? I can’t recall hearing that. Dude’s been nursing a knee injury too, so while he may be unhappy with the situation generally, I haven’t heard or seen any signs of disgruntlement and tehre isn’t a whole lot to be done anyway. He’d be riding the pine if he an Xavier were at Memphis too. If he can’t physically play, he can’t physically play. As for the redshirts, well, they might have preferred to play this year, but they made their choices but I still see them cheering from the bench when KU does something good. No sulking or pouting from them.

So, are you saying definitively that you KNOW these guys are disgruntled or are you assuming they aren’t happy? Have you spoken with them, heard someone else speaking with them or are you able to point to any actual sign that they are unhappy or is this a supposition on your part? Because if you have something, please share it with the group. If you’re guessing, well, that’s fine but just say that you’re guessing and don’t sell it as a fact.

    GREG…WRONG AGAIN.
this ku team has maybe 8 nba players on it.
(maybe more). The fact is that when the
tournament comes around ku will be pumped
up and beating everyone by double digits.
This team is one of the best ever in
ku history and in college basketball.
Texas is another fluke. They will fold like
always when the bright lights come on.

What’s with all the Texas schedule hype?
The Mich. State win was nice..great game. But other than that? N.C. has three losses already this year. What other win is so impressive?

While they made tons of mistakes, I found the Knight/Musberger team to be terribly entertaining (minus the 5-minute Derek Jeter speech).

I don’t really care if he calls Tyshawn “Sherron” and Sherron “Marcus.” I know who the players are. Makes it all worth it to hear Knight call Henderson-Niles from Memphis “The fat kid.”

    I agree with DPW.

Kansas’ schedule looked very respectable in October. If KU wins all their non-con games, I’d say it’s quite impressive. Temple and Tennessee….on the road as the #1 team….will be TOUGH and FANTASTIC wins if they pull them out.

I agree that Texas should be #1 right now. And if they are voted #1, that can only help Kansas when they get around to playing each other.

Bill Self’s history says that in the next couple months Kansas will crank it up a notch and be much more consistent. If that holds true, Kansas will give Texas all they can handle and more. What a game that’s gonna be!!!

GREG….curious about your thoughts on Rick Barnes. I think he’s a very good coach, but sometimes I question if he gets the most out of his teams. Hard to argue against a Final Four and 2 Elite Eights. But he’s bowed out early other years. He has only one Big 12 out-right title in 11 (98-99). He’s shared 2 others with Kansas. He’s never won a Big 12 Tournament Championship….lost 3 in a row to Kansas. I remember the 2 fantastic games of the Roy Williams Jayhawks when KU beat Texas in thrilling games.

Texas seems way too talented on a consistent basis to ALWAYS be second fiddle to Kansas. Even Barnes’ Final Four year was over-shadowed by KU going to the the title game.

    Nick,
I am a big fan of Barnes. While he has yet to win a national title, he turned what was a very forgettable basketball program at Texas (and still is by many of their fans) into a perennial top 20 team. Is he a great game-day coach? Maybe not as good as some but I think the guy does a great job recruiting and reloading each year. What he’s done with coaching up Dexter Pittman is remarkable.

I disagree with your hating on Knight. I can accept the occasional misidentifying of players and even the overblown praise for Derek Jeter….because 90 percent of the time he was talking about basketball strategy that you don’t get when Vitale is yammering on about something. Knight has an obnoxious core that is always there, but no one has ever denied that he was a great basketball teacher. I heard more teaching-type comments in last night’s game that I have in 30 years of diaper dandies and PTPs.

Robert Knight was flat out brutal last night!
Is he conducting clinic or what? How bout a little color….where is Billy Rafferty?
KU is a beast coming down the stretch…. they will take the spirit out of every Big 12 opponent. To much Morris,Aldrich,T-Rob for any mortal team to deal with up front.
Cal would of upset any other top 10 team last night…they just wilted coming down the stretch against that depth. KU runs the the Big 12….write it down.

jj…your wrong about Gill..he knows how to line em up. A winner is a winner is a winner. He’s got that Cornhusker mentality and knows how to pound the ball. Fuck what he did at Buffalo was Snyderesque.
    Watch and learn.

When they interviewed Coach Self after the game during Sports Center, I could have sworn Knight signed off calling him Roy. Seems like his “confusion” is not just limited to the players.

  19. Anonymous says:

    Gavin
SweetRelish, I think RMK was calling him “Boy.” Not sure what, if anything, that says, but he did seem to be acting affectionately toward Bill Self.

Are there 2 jojos? And what did Knight write down while Musberger was talking with Self? And should I have the KU-MU score from the last time KU won in my signature?

Knight was f’n awful calling that game with Musberger. Repeated lazy, detached, long winded breakdowns of replays that didn’t need to be broken down…there were minor elements of John Madden in there, minus the charm. And he did tell Self after the game, “You’ve done a good job with this team boy.”

The thing with Kansas so far – they always play down to their level of competition when they don’t feel threatened. When they know their opponent can’t beat them, they coast. At some point in the 2nd half they’ll go on a run or two and pull away to their usual 12-15 point win.

Once they hit the floor against some tough opponents, I think you’ll see their game raise considerably.

KU is one of if not the best overall basketball program in the nation today. They have the best coach, Bill Self proved to all of us in his title run, that he is outstanding…the crushing on N.C. and out coaching Memphis, with a lesser team, wow….he is better than Roy was. Roy didn’t win the national title here and that is all that keeps the media from giving KU the nod. he should have won at least two titles, he had the talent. Paul Pierce, please….enough said there. If Bill wins it all this year, he gets the crown as the nations best. P.S. its not an accident that Bill brings in 8 NBA players to this squad today, this team is tops for years to come, much because of Bill Self….he’s the best sports guy we’ve had in these parts….he is…

Thanks for writing this, I found it very informational. I was born in Memphis and still have a lot fond memories of the area. I am planning a visit back there this spring. Has Memphis changed much from the early 80’s? I am really looking forward to seeing Graceland again.
