I’m not defending the Pelinis, but in fairness I don’t think Bo “publicly” ranted. His tirade was in the locker room and its immediate environs. As you said, it was within earshot of at least one reporter (and that one report is the only one I’ve seen), so I suppose in that sense it was “public.” But it’s not like his meltdown occurred when he was shaking Brown’s hand or in the postgame press conference.

Totally agree with you that the refs made the right call, but given Bo’s volatile nature, I was not suprised he lost his temper … I was surprised he held it together as well as he did in what I would consider the “public” situations: on the sidelines after the call, during the postgame handshake, and the press conference.

Jeez I don’t remember a Nebraska coach who ever swore at officials. Oh wait… one time there was this Devaney guy. I think that was his name.

C’mon Greg. For someone who claims to have followed the Big 8 since the 60s and be a Nebraska fan it is easy to see Pelini is a lot closer to Devaney than Tom or Frank. I don’t think there is a thing wrong with it. Hell Devaney would probably be getting the same “negative” attention Bo is getting now.

Suh should win the Heisman. It will be a shame if he doesn’t. I’d like to see Texas beat Alabama or at least play them close. If the Tide rolls it’s a kick in the nuts for Big XII football. Had the Pelini’s not said a damn thing after the game in public or private it would have been a perfect night for the Huskers. They exceeded expectations this season. KK’s refusal to deal with the facts of the Pelini’s “breakdown” was a low point for him this year. His King D-Bag title is well deserved. Bill Maas sounded great filling in for C&C today.

I don’t mind Texas’ swagger. It’s their sense of entitlement that makes me loathe them. And, yes, as a KU fan I am fully aware of the irony of saying that. But UT fans know that their school has all the money, all the facilities and an enormous student body that all combine to give them dominance (or close to it) in sports they don’t even care about (like basketball) except to say “We’re awesome!”

The football team has earned its swagger, but University of Texas athletics are sort of like the New York Yankees. Their fans are, by and large, a bunch of frontrunning tools who think championships are their birthright. They make it easy to despise everything about them. Alabama is pretty much the same, right down to the racist history, but with worse dental hygiene and more functional illiteracy.

    Texas swagger? lmao.

If the Long horns are really swaggering over that last second field goal, when they were 2 TD favs, then that is funny. Compared to what Bama did to Florida, that Texas thing is a joke, nuthin but a lucky win. I root for the Big 8, but I am no homer. I would love to see Bama crush tethaz.

I am a KU fan, so it dont much maata bout da rest dem teams, but I do watch, and I saw Alabama play like a team with sawwger. The Tide rolled, over team they had to beat, by a proper margin, and they did.

That thing Tetaz did??? sure it was a win, but who cares? Mainly the money men care.

SOOOOooo are they saying kickers rule in down in tethaz?

I am sure NU fans will have fun watching Alabama kick the shit out of pussy ass Texas ….. fk Texas, ESP if they are all so proud of that last second kick win…lmao.

    Bill,
Bob Devany hasn’t coached in Lincoln for 35 years. Dana X Bible may have let fly with a few f-bombs himself but how relevant are they to Pelini’s act now? I also don’t remember Devaney being an embarrassment — ever. Nebraska was the Texas of Devaney’s time.

Complaining about officials is about as non-Nebraska-like as a deep run in the NCAA tourney in March.

Pelini brothers are white trash. For a program that claims Larry the Cable Guy as their most famous fan, I think they fit right in.

“Alabama is pretty much the same, right down to the racist history, but with worse dental hygiene and more functional illiteracy.”

Ha … Kansan talking about dental hygiene and illiteracy. Everyone knows Kansas to be a bastion of culture and refinement … rriigghhhtt!

Keep ’em coming, Gavin. I’m in stitches.

GH, saying “never happened” is about as much of an exaggeration of KK’s description of Carl Pellini’s tunnel-edge rant as was KK’s claim that he ran out onto the field. The point is Pellini was in earshot and sight of the crowd and press and was yelling at a bunch of college players celebrating their victory, which is pretty classless regardless of the amatuer level of competition.

Great column though (to keep Tony and Hearne happy.)!

    Greg,

You probably don’t remember Devaney being an embarrassment because media scrutiny was 1/1000th of what it is now. There was hardly any games televised, it was all radio and many of the reporters were good friends with the coaches. I guarantee if that had happened back in the 60s or 70s the writers would have sat on the story and had a good laugh about it around the table afterwards.

Times have changed, and so has the media that cover sports. I guess I don’t see anything wrong with what Pelini did. If one reporter (and still the only reporter to go with the story) hadn’t been there this doesn’t get blown out of proportion. If this thing was so bad, wouldn’t multiple sources have confirmed it besides the Omaha Weird-Herald?

People are different. Tom Osborne is walking through that door to coach again. Nebraska fans need to accept it and get over it. I like that Bo has fire and intensity. I am sure his players appreciate it too.

    ______

    Bill,
All the more reason Bo needs to be cognizant of his actions in a world where the media is inside both nostrils looking for boogers. Devaney was as media savvy as they come. He knew what he could get away with and when. Bo could learn much from the Irishman.

screw texas..but they run the big 12.
they got the big 12 offices…most of the
    championship games…the big events..
and what do the north schools get…nothing!
Its about money guys…big money…texas going
to the national championship is big money
to the big 12. Nebraska winning costs the
big 12 (and ku/kstate/mu) thousands of dollars
    per school.
Since if texas loses, big 12 loses millions…
its that simple…and money talks with league
    office and officials

    Tommy,

You may be right although it is a little creepy the way Cliffy seems to hang on every word I say but still can’t get anything factually straight. For example, I don’t think I ever said I was a Kansan, only a KU fan. But why would Cliffy ever let the facts get in the way of his one-participant flame war? I just hope his attraction to me isn’t sexual, but, knowing my luck it almost certainly is. n

Cliffy, sweetheart, I like you but I don’t LIKE YOU like you. Do you understand the differnece? I understand that you aren’t really in the vagina business but the only penis that interests me is my own. I hope we can move past the weirdness of you following me around, counting my words and making assumptions about me because it creeps me out just a bit, but I still think you’re a great guy. I’m just not into dudes.

  13. Anonymous says:

    Hi Gav,

I don’t blame you for the Kansas disclaimer. I wouldn’t want that association either.

One participant flame war? Seems to me we’ve got a three-way going here. It appears that Tommy and Gavin might be the two in bed together but far be it from me to pass judgment. That’s your business.

In the meantime, just stop making stupid comments and I’ll not be compelled to reply.

And yeah, I guess “Cliffy” is a pretty goofy name … isn’t it “Tommy.” Yours is much cuter.

Pellini is the best coach in the Big 12….if he was coaching the horses on Texas he would of won by 4 touchdowns. He just needs to bring in a couple of ringers at the skill positions.

Gieez, Cliffy, what the fuck is your problem? I admit that Gavin can be kind of a know it all douche, but your interest in him is way beyond normal. You seem to get to decide what’s stupid but you clearly have no credentials to do that as you live make stupid assumptions about people. And I saw last week where you actually did go to the trouble of counting Gav’s words, so it seems you care about him more than he cares about you. And, yeah, his comment about you being a homosexual was pretty lame, but your “I’m rubber and you’re glue” defense is even weaker. Is it because y ou have a small penis and this is the only place you can go where you can be a swinging dick?

Tell you what, Cliffy, why don’t you just leave the smack to the grownups and demonstrate some intellect before you go criticizing that of others?

  16. Anonymous says:

    Gosh,

I’ve been chewed out by somebody who accuses me of having a small penis and goes by the handle “Bang her and mash.” Wish I could come up with stuff like that. Clearly, I’m out of my league.
You’re right, I’ll leave the smack to “intellectuals” like you “bang her.” (Slapping knee … laughing … “bang her” … what a great handle … why didn’t I think of that?!)

    Thanks for weighing in.

I watched Suh play half a dozen games, and he dominated all but one: the KU game. True, Neb still won, but Suh was a non-factor. Did he have the flu? Surely it wasn’t KU’s line that did him in.

KK has 15 minutes of stuff to say and 4 hours to say it in. I have no time for him, so you could say I neither hate nor love him. I ignore him.

Verne Gagne? Greg is that a wrestling reference?

    rick,
Absolutely. Gagne was also drafted by the Chicago Bears in 1947 and played in the NFL for a short stint. But he made his bones smashing them in the rassling rink.

Being NO.1 in sports radio in Kansas City is not that big of an accomplishment. He is only on the air because he bought the station. There is only one good sports team in the area, and that is the Jayhawks basketball team. Which everyone knows KK loves so much. MU could have a good football team with better coaching. The Chiefs and Royals suck. All sports radio in KC is third class, at best. To even mention KK in the same sentence as Howard Stern is a joke. Howard Stern is smarter and more entertaining than KK could or ever wish he could be.

Goose, that’s just silly. KK has dominated sports radio in this town for years. I know some people, including Greg, dislike him personally but nearly all his distractors will concede that he’s a very talented radio host.

Numbers like his are hard to come by in any market. Hate him, make fun of him, whatever. But being number 1 is an accomplishment and he’s earned it.

Yeah Rick, Gange was a star in the AWA, primarily up north, in the 50’s and 60’s. Sad deal with old Vern. In February of this year he, while a member of the memory loss unit of a Minnesota hospital, body slammed and killed a 97 year old fellow patient. No kidding.

Seems the 97 year old man was looking out the window and said “Look, they’re re-stocking the lake”, and Gagne thought he said,”What do you mean, rasslin’s fake?”

Ndamukong Suh is the BADDEST motherfucker I’ve ever seen play college football, period. If he doesn’t win the Heisman and isn’t the 1st overall pick in the NFL draft next April it’ll be a CRIME. He shoved around NFL-caliber offensive lineman in that Big 12 title game like they were ragdolls and he simply couldn’t be contained on the biggest stage he’s ever played on.

I watched that game and as sad as it was for Nebraska it was a fantastic game to watch! College football is so much better than NFL. I don’t know why I waste time watching the NFL. The difference between the two is college ball has soul and when it gets to pro it’s all about the money and the individual player’s not so much about the team.

K-State will never be Nebraska in football, and they know it, and it drives them nuts. K-State may get to the Iowa level, but never top tier. Snyder never sniffed a national championship. Nebraska verified that they are still relevant in the BCS picture. Nebraska Football is KU Basketball and it drives KK nuts.. Sorry…

Yeah Uncle I knew he was a wrestler and know his history. Was well aware of the sad deal with him killing a fellow resident. I just thought it was cool Greg was giving him a shout out.

Here is one you don’t know. Verne’s granddaughter by his son and also wrestler Greg Gagne is wanted by the police for having sex with a student, she of course being a teacher. She’s on the run.

Mermaid, Mermaid, what are we going to do with you? Any time someone makes blanket statements they are almost always wrong. “College ball has soul and the NFL is just about money.” People are people. Their are good people in the NFL and bad people in college football. Read Greg’s post about the Rush boy and you’ll see he was about money in HIGH SCHOOL. Go see the movie the Blind Side that kid is now in the NFL. Their are money grubbing me first people in college sports. Their are people playing the game because of a love and passion in the NFL. Good and bad in both. And with all the unethical things that happen in college sports….well don’t know how one can make the comment you made. I think many would say that college sports is all about money just the players are slaves that don’t see any of it.
