Funny listening to Chris and Cowboy attack Mango the last couple of days. I remember early in the season when they were touting Mango as one of the top 10 or so coaches in college football, saying if he had the resources of a Florida how great he would be. How much he had done with little ole Kansas and what not. And now this? Funny how the Home of the Jayhawks changes its tune.

All of this because he lost a couple of games. Damn.

Maybe all the hatred in Kansas could be filtered into coming up with new laws to curtail the sale of material used to make meth, change the laws so that the death penalty could be used more often in case of 1st degree murder . . . .

. . . . nah, let’s just add some more twine to our biggest tourist attraction.

I love, L-O-V-E, LOVE the fact that Jocques Crawford is now being viewed as the guy with the insight on Mark Mangino by the sports-talk world. This is the guy that got kicked off the team for being in a fight with a team member that led to the team member suffering a severe head injury, isn’t it? Or am I “misremembering” something in the same fashion as Andy Pettite? And now he is giving interviews standing astride the metaphorical (and admittedly girthy) corpse of the guy that removed him. There is no way anyone who quoted Crawford is looking for an unbiased story.

It’s too bad, but I think Mangino is done. I think I’d prefer he stays, but his recruiting will get hammered if he hangs around. No way he can survive this.

KU is sinking fast. Not just its football program but the university as a whole.
This perkins guy has shoved a lot of crap into
alumnis face. His hiring of bill self was not that risky. He got lucky with self because self
is the best bb coach in the nation now.
Perkins is a slimball. He’s all about the money.
He thinks he can pay off everyone to get what
he wants. Mangino may be overweight but he has]
been a good coach and made this pathetic
    program good again.
KU…watch out. You’re starting to fall into the
same trap as MU did years ago. This guy is
going to end up screwing you. If mangion gets
fired I guarantee you he’ll be talking about
the crap this perkins guy has done. Its been
covered up because of money and jobs.
We faced this at MU and cleaned house. This
perkings guy is a first class con man and I
can see the university having serious problems.
I always like mangino as a coach. Now that he’s
gone I look for MU to kick the shit out of
KU for the next 5 years.

    have clouded your thinking.
ever hear of bobby knight? Was horrible to his
players…even in public..but he did get raves
    from the parents.
Grunny…don’t believe all htis crap…its all
about not winning games. If mark wins
10 games this year..all is forgiven.
    Lew perkings is a scumbag.

    JoJo,

You never get tired of those credibility hits do you? Perkins didn’t hire Bill Self. Self was on board before Perkins got to Lawrence. Given your obvious lack of knowledge about the situation, you’ll pardon me for not immediately accepting your “analysis” of what is happening to KU.

    KU please hire Dennis Franchione.

Mangino is so getting the shaft. I still think there is a back-story that no one can find. Given the uber-liberal bias in Lawrence and KU I can’t believe they aren’t giving the guy a chance to rehab. A little Jimmy Swaggart style mea culpa and this guy is GOLDEN.

Matt Cassel is useless as a starter in the NFL. Even with the talent he has the Chiefs will need two or three years to get him the full compliment of talent he needs. Let’s just call him the Spentaur…as in spent our money on this jagoff.

  10. Anonymous says:

    Gavin
    Smartman,

He’d actually have to MAKE the mea culpa before he could have a chance for any kind of “therapeutic cure” like anger management, and I don’t see Mangino as the mistake-admitting kind. And it won’t matter even if he does. If Perkins wants him gone, he’s gone. There is just no way he can recruit with all of this hanging over his head and Perkins knows that.

If Perkins had any desire to keep Mangino, this would not have publicly broken and certainly not the way it did. You’ve heard more about this story than you did about the football/basketball fights and there are police reports and witness recounts of the fights. But KU managed to clamp down on that story and maintain some level of control over the story. If Perkins wanted this shut up, it would have been.

And liberal bias has nothing to do with it. Keep your politics out of the sports section unless tehre is a direct connection, m’kay?

Do the sports writers and radio hosts in this town even care about Zack Greinke?

The day that kid leaves the Royals they’ll all be whining like little babies, and we’ll look back to when he won the Cy Young and they all preferred to talk about a lameduck coach about to be a footnote and an under-achieving WR who got suspended.

The fucking terrorists that masterminded the 9/11 attacks are getting more justice than Mangino. I agree with others who think there is more to the story.

Gavin: Under any circumstances KU has not handled this with any kind of dignity. It oould have all been kept silent and Mangino could have been dismissed. No questions, no comments just let the media speculate. Hell, they could have said he was resigning for health reasons. I’ve talked to kids that have played for him and yeah, he’s a prick and a bully and uses some old school forms of motivation. Most coaches do. That’s why they coach and don’t run Fortune 500 companies. In short they are ruining the guys life.

Tim Grunhard is an idiot. He went from telling Soren Petro that he thought Mangino wouldn’t be fired at all on Monday to saying he has a source that told him Mangino was out during Kietzman’s show.

He must not be very locked in if he never had a problem sending players to KU in the past, but now all of a sudden it would be a problem. Does he not talk to his former players after they leave? Wouldn’t they have told him some of this stuff?

The guys is a blowhard idiot who doesn’t have a clue about anything he just spouts his opinion. Somehow that holds some water because he played for the Chiefs. The guy is a putz.

    ManDshagger-

I’m not defendingt he way KU has handled this situation. I agree that MM is getting screwed hard and iwthout so much as a kiss. However, I can’t think of a time Mangino ever admitted a mistake, let alone apologized for one, and that includes getting the program on probation. All I am saying is that IF there is a scenario where Mangino could come back, that scenario would have to include Mangino apologizing, agreeing to some “therapy” and a promise to so better in the future. I don’t think that even that could save him at this point, but those things would be a minimum. But I agree with you that he is being treated shabbily, especially in light of what he has done for the school.

Mangino’s been great for KU football the last 7 years. He brought excitment back. But the future can be as bright or brighter at Kansas, I have no doubt.

Lew may swing and miss, but he WILL take a big swing at bringing in a coach to keep KU competitive in the Big 12 in the future.

Saw a picture of The Sugar Bowl Mascot and The Orange Bowl Mascot the other day. Sorry, that was Mangino and The Orange Bowl Mascot.

The Chiefs were leading The Biggest Loser Football Challenge, losing over 340lbs. before the season opened. Looks like KU is going to surpass them by losing 500lbs. before the season is over.

I’ve gotten calls from friends in Chicago, Philly, Atlanta, NY, Miami and Seattle asking what the deal is with Mangino. The story is getting some coverage on their local tv and radio + ESPN. They are all asking the same question. WHAT REALLY HAPPENED? They can’t believe this is over a little shoving-choking-verbal abuse.

    John,
I don’t know any more than the next guy with a keyboard whether or not T. Gill or Little Lou can be successful coaches in the B12 North. I’m just basing my opinion (and that’s all it is) on what I have observed from their previous work. If I was hiring a coach, I’d pass on both.

What basis do you have to say Mangino is gone today? That’s outrageous unless you cite a source, or two.

I think it will turn out that Greg is wrong. Mangino will loss his job early next week Wednesday the latest. If not then, nothing will happen until the end of the season.

Clearly, Lew wants him out.His ability to recruit has been destroyed by the way it has been handled, by design there is no other answer. One rumor has it that the fight between the FB & BB teams cost Self Harrison Barnes have clue if there is any truth to that, but if there is the fact that Mangino kind of blow off holding his team to an equal degree of blame would explain alot of this, especially IF barnes was coming here that is a big reason he’s now going to UNC. Grunny does know at least one very big KU money person who I’m sure has Lew’s personal phone number. Maybe they talked after Monday’s show. The coach I would take serious look / run after is Tommy Tuberville. He was a D – Cood. at Texas A&M (10 win season ’94), he wins(60+ %), would open Florida some , name coach to help put the bad stuff behind us. Money people would love the imagine he brings to the program. Is it far fetched to say he would be the 2nd best coach in the north right off the bat? Internet that I saw only mentioned Virginia and Central Florida. Can have a good chance to win the North consistenly and do to the South what KSU did to OU. Like was said earlier it will be very interesting to see who Lew will(or already has ) hire(d) as the next Coach. Because he is too smart not know exactly what he is doing and not either have the guy or a list of 2 to 3 names. The new coach while come quick or we are scewed.

Paul: The Pats system and circumstances, everybody stepped up when Tom Brady went down, had a lot of impact on Cassel’s performance. He is not starter material in the NFL, wasn’t starter material in college. He does not impress me as having leadership qualities. He seems very immature and out of control when he does make a good play, kinda like a high school QB would. Pioli went all in with Cassel and we all bought the bluff. Matt Cassel isn’t taking the Chiefs or any other team to a Superbowl unless he’s paying for the tickets.

Why is it “outrageous” to think Mangino will be gone as soon as today? I have some outrageous thoughts but that is far from being one of them.

Grunny can’t trust Mangino? Haaaaaaaaah. At least Mangino’s tags on his cars are registered legitimately and his driver’s license lists his actual address. Grunny is an authority on morality? Yeah, he learned his High School coaching skills on the payroll of the North End Mafia.

Smartman, what has happened to you? Did you sell your title and now someone different is posting under your name? Have aliens taken over your body? I use to read your posts and think “I know why he has that name, great comment.” Now, I’m like huh? Cassell has been incredible under the circumstances. My guess is his quarterback rating would bear that out. I think he has been tentative sometimes but not sure if that’s him or the coach holding him back. He’s had one bad game and obviously injuries. How many INT’s does he have? I sure would rather have him RIGHT NOW then Jay Cutler. Smartman come see me as I have something for you so you can carry your name properly. If not we may have to change your name as % formerly known as Smartman.
