Great coverage GH, but once again, your negative hard-on re: all-things-KSU is influencing your opinions. Mangino is disliked by Snyder and that was evident when KK interviewed Snyder shortly after he re-took the KSU job. KK asked Snyder about his purloining Joe Bob Clements from Mangino’s staff and KK ansked Snyder, “coach didn’t you once say that you would never take a coach from a friend’s staff?”

Snyder responded, “Yes…I did say that.”

The latest aspects of the Mangino story to hit print were available before you posted, Greg, and they say that Mangino poked a player in the chest. Apparently it was Arist Wright. If that and some yelling were all that happened, I’d be hard-pressed to think that Magino should be fired. Unfortunately for Mangino, the media have attacked this story teeth first and the sway is now against him. Sadly, as a KU fan, I don’t think he can survive this and, even if he could hold onto his job for another year, he’d be a lame duck all next season and would be unable to recruit. It’d be like Glen Mason one year after he reneged on his acceptance of the Georgia job; no one believed he was going to last and he didn’t.

I’m not sure that these incidents, if correct, warrant Mangino getting canned, but I just don’t see how he survives this. It looks like Lew Perkins is going to get his shot at naming a “money” coach. here’s hoping he doesn’t fuck it up because this isn’t going to be like replacing Terry Allen.

    Pt,
You and I both saw the friendly embrace Snyder and Mangino shared following KSU’s win just 10 days ago. Snyder held Mangino close and whispered what appeared to be encouraging words into his very large dome. The two men smiled when they parted. If Mangino truly is guilty of the treasonous act KK accuses him of, no way Snyder would treat him with such respect…and he wouldn’t deserve it.

Are we the only two idiots awake this late?

  4. Anonymous says:

That was not respect. Snyder digs ear wax.

Ptolemy, I believe you about Snyder liking ear wax, but when have you ever heard of a man his age who was unable to produce enough of his own earwax to satisfy his appetite as well as store some for late-night snacking and also some home canning and freezing?

Speaking of Zack Grienke, I caught part of an interview with him on Fox 4 news last night. Zack makes Neil Smith look like William F. Buckley. He may have a wicked arm but there seems to be a roadblock between the thought and the comment.

I saw K.K> had the grocery store last night. he had an erection and said he was going for a late drive.

Could someone please ask Zack to not pick his nose while on TV. No wonder he got so many wins. No one wanted to touch the ball.

Whitlocks column is un-fucking-believable! Now he’s a doctor-shrink-nutritionist-guidance counselor. How do so many whackjobs wind up in KC at the same time? This is a strange witch hunt at best. There has to be more to this story than a chest poke or choke.

Hopefully, GH, you caught former KU linebacker Nick Reid on 810 this morning. Wonder if KK will replay any of that interview. Great insight and sort of debunks the notion that everyone is on board with termination.

I think Reesing is the little bitch driving all this. The little munchkin bitch still hasn’t recovered the wound to his massive ego from being benched by the fat man and you know what they say about scorned women.

Gavin, Snyder has conditioned himself to subsist on only one meal a day. Mangino has more than enough ear wax to serve a man of Snyder’s appetites.

I don’t blame Clinksdale for not speaking up. Every time he tried to provide balance he was mocked and his opinion was immediately discounted by KK the barracuda. I was really amused when KK thought Clink was comparing Snyder and Mangino’s coaching style and KK erupted, stating, “this will be the last time you say that today”. Clink was seriously backpedaling at that point.

If ku is 8-1 or 7-3 noones talking about mangino
being too fat. If they go to a bowl and win the
big 12 north…noone talks about mangino being
    too fat.
The only one concerned about his weight is
porkchop jason. Fat people are good people too.
He let the marketing department and perkins
screw the season with those stupid posters about
historic season. The basketball team would never
allow those posters to be put out..even when
they have 5-8 future nba starters on their team.
I’ve made fun of mangino but he has done a good
job. Perkins has millions to throw at another
coach and he’s going to fire mangino.
The new potential hires will be waiting in
line for those millions. KU probably feels that
they can unload mangino now…not have to pay
him big money…and start fresh with a
complete new highly paid big name coach.
Mangino made his own problems. But if they
had a great season noone would be talking about
his weight and he could be 800 pounds and theyd
    still love him in lawrence.
We see what happends when a coach loses his
players. We see what happens when the assistant
coaches hate the head coach. Are you following
this haley? Are you learning a lesson?
Hopefully he will because right now the players
anhd his coaches hate the sob.

Greg, you are going a bit far praising Mangina as a good coach. He has ONE season where he finished above .500 in the league and that was the year they didn’t have to play OU or TU and the only winning team they played kicked their ass. Then sweet Lew purchased an Orange bowl bid. That’s it….nothing else. He has been mediocre at best.

    Again, ONE winning season!!!

  18. Anonymous says:

Tim – You’re right, however, the perception is there is a huge improvement which has been reflected in higher season ticket sales and an impending upgrade to the stadium. Mangino at least made football relevant again (in Lawrence) which many of his predecessors had failed miserably for many years.

Greg, you’re guilty of the very thing you rip KK for. You have a bias against him that doesn’t allow you to objectively evaluate his comments and perspectives. That’s fine, bias exists everywhere. Your posts are better, however, if you can put the cheap shots aside. Just like his program is better when he does likewise.

Some call him a dictator, some simply call him an a-hole. As long as Mangino’s players were scoring TDs and hitting hard in the 4th quarter, there’s no problem. even last year, when KU got blown out at home by Texas Tech and Texas, they went 7-5, beat MU and KSU and won a bowl on national tv. No problems.

This is all about the 5 game losing streak, an impotent offense, and 4th quarter defensive collapses. Being such an a-hole to everyone bought Mangino little slack when things went bad.

When KU fans looked down at their ticket stub saturday against Nebraska, saw $90, then looked at the field and saw a weak Corn team stopping Reesing and running through our defense, they said “fatman’s lost it. This isn’t worth it. time for basketball season.” Lew can’t have that.

Assuming Mangino did NOT inapporopriately abuse his players, I really hope he gets one more year to try to prove this year was a fluke.

But the flurry of information from various media outlets makes me think he might be doomed. If he is, I hope it’s justified. Poking in the chest and verbal tirades aren’t’ a reason to fire a guy.

Clinkscale is on the money comparing Mangino to Snyder. Both don’t give a crap to the media, both don’t do many interviews, both are dull, and both have played in a single BCS Bowl game.

Er…..wait…..Mangino WON his BCS bowl game. Hmm. Maybe Clinkscale DOESN’T know what he’s talking about.

Mangino has 1 winning season in conference play. That mid-morning clown on 610 had the nerve to say that Mangino is one of the 15 best coaches in America. Let me say this again, Mangino has 1 winning season in conference play.

As for the story that KK told of him bolting to OU, I can say with absolute certainty that chain of events took place nearly exactly as KK told them. The first several years of MM’s reign in Lowrents, Snyder made no secret about his dislike for MM. That has dissipated some with time and age, but Snyder is not shedding any tears this week.

So Lew Perkins should fire Mangino ’cause Fatman pulled a dick move back at K-State to the almighty Snyder?

I could give a shit what Snyder thinks of Mangino.

True, Mangino has only one winning record in the Big 12.

But excluding his first year (0-8), Mangino has taken KU to 4 Bowl games in 6 years. He’s 19-19 against Big 12 North teams, including 4-4 against K-State and 4-3 against Missouri.

That’s not stellar, but the Big 12 is a MONSTER. Finishing 3-5 or 4-4 is actually a pretty good accomplishment, assuming you can go 5-3 or 6-2 every now and then.

Brian – keep in mind that same “mid-morning clown on 610” said last week that Gary Pinkel was an “abysmal” coach.

So, winning consecutive B12 North titles = abysmal, but a single winning conference season means Mangino is one of the best. Makes sense.

If he did choke his player Manjello should be fired.

Whitlock column made one good point today.

After the 12-1 season normally there are talks of the coach going to a bigger/better school. There was no interested in Manjello. Why? Because of his weight.

Tenn, UCLA, Minn, ect did not want to offer a job to a guy who might die from a heart attack or be inmobile from a stroke in three years.

Unless a bad Sun Belt or Confrence USA team offers his a job, Kansas is his first and should be his last D1 HC job.

Now saying that I could see Menjello in a D-2 sideline ala Terry Bowden in two years.

Everyone keeps talking about how Mangino only has 1 winning season in Big 12. Since 2000 MU only has 2, and K-State has 3. Don’t see the huge disparity. And how in the hell do you “BUY” a BCS bowl game? Say what you want, Mangino has taken this program from a complete joke, to being relevant once again. Sure, only 1 winning season in Big 12, but nobody in the north has done that much better.

Say what you want about Mangino beating up on K-State, CU and Nebraska programs that have been at their lowest points in 10+ years during part of Mangino’s tenure, the fact remains, he’s vastly overrated.

Check out Mangino’s Big XII record. Well under .500, even with the dream season two years ago. Need more info? Check out his record vs. DI schools? Also well under .500. He’s NEVER beaten a big boy from the Big XII and it’s rarely been competetive when it comes to the Texas and Oklahomas of the world.

Hall likes to talk of his ‘dominance’ over his rivals NU and KSU…he still has a losing record to both those schools and never won a big 12 north title.

He’s overrated. Period. If KU hadn’t been a joke for so long before he came (and even two or three of the years he has been there) nobody would be impressed with what he’s done.

And who the hell has Pinkel beat? Mangino has a winning record against MU also. Don’t see where you get he’s “Well under 500” against D-1 schools? And what coach in the north, except for Snyder has a winning record in the Big 12? Three bowl wins since ’05 (including BCS win)that KU you apparently “paid for”. What a shitty coach! Oh yeah, that’s the same amount of bowl wins Pinkel has (minus the BCS win that KU has).

Where did I write of KU’s “dominance” over KSU, MU and NU? I simply wrote he beat them regularly.

    SM,
Hard to argue with the perception I am biased when it comes to my coverage of KK. But he steps in it more often than a blind pig farmer, which makes it difficult to ignore. But he is great fodder for a column like mine and I am one of his more ardent listeners.

    Tim,
When you take into account the success Mangino has had at KU compared to the previous 40 years, it is difficult to ignore what he has accomplished — despite his overall Big 12 record. I think the guy can coach (and I was one of his biggest critics his first four or five years.)
