Greg come on. You are old enough to go back to the Kansas City Kings game. GM Joe Axelson(not sure if that is spelled correctly) is clearly a top ten guy. Fans (and remember this was in the 70’s before we became market savvy) made Joe Axelson masks to wear to the games. I was just a kid but remember this clearly. People are still bitter about the Kings leaving and hold Joe responsible. My guess is there would be others but that is the first guy that came to mind.

How in the hell did Kevin Kietzman not make this list? I know he’s not really a “sports figure” per se. But he covers sports and I contend that since Carl Peterson left town Kietzman is the most hated person in KC. Is there really anyone with a brain that has listened to him that actually still likes that uninformed, over sensitive, little putz?

no one hates tony pena jr. he’s harmless. how about Jose Guillen or Juan Gonzales? those are way higher on the list for being overpaid, underhustling busts.

On KU, those in the know hold Dean Smith, the KU grad, much more responsible for Roy’s departure and betrayal. Dean backstabbed his alma mater by recruiting its coach during the ’03 final four. Make no mistake, Roy wanted to win that, but the distraction was too much. Dean won’t come back to Lawrence b/c he knows someone will punch his old mug on Mass. Street if he shows. I’d do it.

    rick,Bob and JohnnyU,
Excellent additions. Joe Axe definitely belongs on this list. TPJ may have made it simply because his stench is still fresh. I am sure I missed others — add your pick to the list below.

King Carl ain’t ever giving #1.

MARK LITTELL (otherwise a very likeable Royals closer, I understand)…for giving up a series-clenching walk-off to Chris Chambliss in 1976?

Reading the boxscore, it sounds like a marvelous series and game. This homer occurred after G. Brett tied the game in the 8th with a 3-run bomb.

Does most hated mean more people hate him or people that hate him, hate him to a greater degree than anyone else? If it’s the latter, as I prefer, George Brett has to be next to Bo. Those that hate George (Ernest from Excelsior Springs for example), have got it worse than anybody on this list.

Also, if you have Carl Peterson on the list, you’ve got to place Lamar Hunt there, because HE is why Carl was here so long.

And Joe Axelson was not the enemy of the Kings, Greg Luckenbill was.

I know it’s been awhile, but shouldn’t Charlie Finley be somewhere on the list? I wasn’t here at the time, but apparently the KC Star was so pissed at Charlie O that it refused to run ads for The Beatles 1964 concert that he paid a lot of money to have happen. As a result, KC was the first (and probably) only tour stop in the nation for the group that didn’t sell out.

Urban legend or kernel of truth?

Elvis Grbac for his famous restaurant quote,oh yeah, and that last series against the Broncos.

Charlie Finley, among other things, threatened to move the A’s to Peculiar and re-name them the Peculiar Athletics, then moving to Oakland after we watched a roster full of soon to be all stars and World Series champions.

David Glass, for running the Royals like a Walmart in Springfield.

Al Eschbach, just because of his voice.

Willie, Blue Moon, and Jerry Martin for not sharing.

The waitress from Tanner’s that started this whole mess with the Chiefs.

I was in left field GA when Pinella was with the Yankees playing left field. A drunk guy and his girfriend kept taunting Pinella and he came over to the wall to try and get the guy to come down and fight him. The guy dumped his beer on Pinella’s head. So, Pinella had at least two incidents I am aware of. God I miss those Friday twinight doubleheaders!

Jack Steadman? I remember they honored him at halftime at a Chiefs game a while back and the stadium booed him.

  14. Anonymous says:

Elvis Grbac, too. Maybe the most hated Chief in the last 20 years, other than Elliot.

Damn, I keep thinking of others. Bam Morris and Tamarick Vanover come to mind for their little drug scheme.

Ask any Mizzou fan and Quin Snyder would rank pretty high on their list. Tom Asbury I would imagine would be the same for the Catbackers, though Asbury didn’t land his team on probation like Quinny the Pooh did for Mizzou. He did, however, take over a relatively successful program and proceed to run it into the ground.

Have you forgotten Charlie Finley. He is by far the most hated.

I’ll tell you why Johnny Damon is so despised: Whether it’s correct or even fair, the perception is that Damon was the one who started the mass exodus of good/great players out of Kansas City. Jermaine Dye got traded away before Damon, but he wasn’t out there bitching and proclaiming that he was going to split as soon as he got the chance. But Johnny Damon begat Carlos Beltran and the rest of whatever talent the Royals had who all realized that they wanted to get paid a lot more money and to play for a different team. If you want a poster child for the hired gun/mercenary player who doens’t give a shit about the team or the city, for Cowtowners, Johnny Damon is your man. Again, it may not be fair or accurate, but that’s the perception. And given how much money he’s made and his World Series rings, it’s hard to blame him for not caring what KC thinks of him.

Bono was the restaurant quote. I thought of him later. Charlie Finley is good. Note that I said people held Joe responsible for the Kings leaving. That doesn’t mean he was responsible. But that was the public perception.

He wasn’t hated but until recently for some reason he hated KC. Amos Otis. I don’t think people hated him but they sure were mad when in the playoffs John Mayberry messed up a play that lost the game due to not revealing he was injured.

For me with Damon it was because he tried to come off as this Christian guy but then wrote a book about sleeping with all these women.

I know I’m going to take A LOT of heat for this. And I don’t hate the guy. But I would still say I’m angry with Darrell Porter for much the same reasons. And YES I know I’m going to start getting “It’s a disease.” response.

Most KU people I know hated, HATED Terry Allen and Al Boal. Allen replaced a good coach in Glenn Mason and turned the program into one of the bottom dwellers of the Big 12. And Al Boal people still make fun of his “Dove” rant to this day.

As of most hated media people Whitlock would be on the list. I like him, but for ever person who likes him, there are two who hate him.

And Nick Wright would have to be on the list. What’s to like about him? White guilt, acts black, hates the fact that he’s rich and white, is a lib. He got punked by Petro and cried about it on his radio shows. Someday some real hood rats are going to kick his backside.

It is the bye week. Good time for LJ to be bye-polar.

Missie B’s is having a Larry Johnson Night. Two drink spiting minimum, you get to slap a bitch and call everyone a faggot. Costs the same as a Chiefs game to get in. Either way, a real drag.

wow greg…you’re breaking all comment records this week. The most hated person in kc sports
has to be two winners…clark and david glass.
Regardless of how bad all thwe others were noone
has done more damage to the entire city than
these 2 worthless pieces of shit.
I know its easy to scream at larry and tony jr.
but their destructive ability is nothing compared to the bullshit management decisions made by clark and glass.
These 2 have destroyed not only some good teams
but have refused to invest in them.
Whoever says an outof town owner isna’t important needs to show me winners who live in the town their team is in. Bartolo…jones…
    patriots/steelers/vikings/bears/miami have all
had owners who werew part of the city and
community. We get fly by owners who have taken
every last penny they could from the fans
    and taxpayers.
Fuck you glass. Fuck you clark. You are going to get your money making machines stopped.
These 2 guys have fucked this town and in the
end will be the most hated people in the
    sports world in kc.

I reckon it has to be a local sports figure, but the man Chiefs fans probably most love to hate is Al Davis. It’s probably the only thing KC and LA have in common.

Someone has to teach these stupid millionaire jocks how to use twitter, can LJ actually be that stupid to screw up a paycheck like that.

OT….Whats up with Haley…dude does not look presidential..On TV he comes off looking like a homeless man…..whats up with that?
I think I’ve seen enough…they’ll run this guy by 2010 at the latest if he is lucky. What a mess this franchise is.

Speaking of Christians, I’m surprised no one has mentioned Mike Sweeney. I’ve heard many a lost soul pounce on the dude when he started with the back problems by questioning his desire and grit. Finding peace and comfort in something other than baseball is a concept that grated the heathens.

Memorial Hall, Wednesday Nights, Mertie and Gertie! I hated them bitches. LJ’s daddy is right LJ doesn’t hate gays. He hates faggots. Keep it real ya’ll. They’s a difference. I don’t hate President Obama because he’s black, allegedly. I hate him ’cause he’s stupid. Just like Larry, ya know what I’m sayin’ fo real. I do hope LJ gets das boot because that’ll mean Rev’s Jesse and Al will be rollin’ into town to defend the brotha which means Ollie will be smokin up the GOOD meat during the LJ’s and Gays summit moderated by Cornell West my intellectual soul brotha, Peter Gomes the gay pastor from the Divinity School at Harvard and top it off with Mammie Squitiro and Al Brooks with a special guest appearance from the dude that plays Lafayette on True Blood. If WE play the race card the right way KCMO can become ground zero for racio-sexual reconcilliation. Or maybe not.

One more thought. Rush Limbaugh can’t own an NFL team because he makes racist and biggoted statements, ALLEDEGLY….But LJ can do the same thing, with EVIDENCE, to support it and he can, and will play in the NFL.

how about a list of the really good athletes/
    owners/managers in this town…
    Lenny dawson
    Dick Howser
    Hank Stram
    Ed Budde
    Dan Quisenberry
    Buck O Neil
    Willie Lanier
Ewing and Murial Kaufman (the greatest people)
The Kaufman family (although a bunch of drunks
their passion for this city is unmatched)
Cerner owners (despite losing millions these guys are on track to make a huge differene
in this city..and they arev willing to put their
money where their hearts and mouths are!)
Neil Smith (not a linguist but this guy still
bleeds red and is still one of the most down
to earth guys in our city)
Derrick Thomas (although he slept with as many
women as wilt, his heart was always in the
right place…helping those less fortunate and
wayward women looking for a bed to screw in)
I know there are many more…but why focus on
the losers in our town. Its people like this
that made this town’s sports enjoyable and
    a source of pride.
To all those not on the “good” list…take a
    hike…gf yourself.

Ever heard of a guy named Charlie Finley? He is without a doubt one of the most hated people in KC history, let alone KC area sports. All he did was run the KC A’s like it was a farm team for other clubs, keep livestock in the outfield of Municipal Stadium and oh yeah…he moved the A’s to Oakland!
