OTC: Are KU Football Fans Too Cold?

Kansas football fans have come to embrace quarterback Todd Reesing and his teammates, but the Jayhawks still seem to feel they get no respect on a national basis. Or, perhaps the 'no-respect' ploy is just a motivational tool. | FILE PHOTOGRAPH/THE CAPITAL-JOURNAL

KK says a lot of stupid stuff. To suggest that K-State wins the North in the next two years is over the top stupid.

Black people give Rush plenty of material to work with. The quotes from the brothaz and sistaz lined up for “sum-a-dat Obama money” in Detroit last week were priceless.

Greg, I’ll see your Runza and raise you two Maid Rite’s.

Limbaugh could do for the Rams what George Preston Marshall did for the Redskins. It’s rumored that Rush wanted a piece of the Eagles, but McNabb turned him down.

I was at the KU game Saturday and stayed to the end. But it was cold….freakin’ cold. Most prepared for 50 degrees or so and some sun. I’m not sure it reached 40 and the wind was howling. I saw tons of people, especially students in not nearly enough clothes. That would explain a lot of it.

39 and windy boo-hoo Sally! Not like you all went to one of the warm bowl games either. Ku is Basketball WAY 1st. Football as a nice appetizer to the basketball season.

Fans in the metro, and extending to Lawrence, seem to always leave the game early no matter the score, tempature or consequence of the out come. KC is about the pre-game party, party in the stands until half way. With the exception of KU Basketball the game is a party excuse. Alos fans are more about saying they had tickets while at the office and telling you a couple of tid bits on Monday than actually going to the game.

    KK is a douche!

After Whitlock’s pathetic column (does he even know who Walter Williams is?) it would seem an appropriate time for GH to resurrect his stories from his Pork Chop Ghost Writer days.

Before you rip KSU for giving up 60 to TTech in Lubbock, answer why last years Kansas squad gave up 60+ to them in Lawrence last year.

why do fans leave the stadium at halftime?
To go get boozed/liquored up/and drunk at half
    time in the parking lot.

Is Kyle Turley still “too white”? I suppose all this racism stuff is fine when your ox isn’t being gored. How’d all the gangsta life work out for you, Mr.McNair?

One does not preclude the other and KU was ripped to shreads in the media for doing so.

    Couple of thoughts.
    1. Chiefs can beat Washington. After running through that 5 team gauntlet…. Skins are gonna feel like playing a JV team.

    2. Here is a long shot prediction: Mangenius coaching FSU 2010 $$$$$$$$$$$$$

That $5 million buyout for Jimbo’s contract will make this impossible. And Mangino will still be a middle aged morbidly obese male. He’s already outlived any actuary table. No big time team will invest in him. Facts is facts. I have no clue why the radio guys and national guys shy away from the obvious reasons why he is still at KU.

Kansas is the only state that has enough vacant land to bury him in. The up side is they would have a mound big enough to ski on in the winter.
Could rival the biggest ball of twine and world’s deepest hand-dug well as major tourist attractions in the state.

I read the column by Sam Mellinger on Rush Limbaugh in today’s Star, and it paints a FAR different picture of Rush than what Whitlock and others portray. I’ve heard many accounts of Rush being a good, caring man. Primarily, he’s an entertainer. Much of what he says is tongue-in-cheek and sarcastic. Many times, what he says is either taken out of context or mis-represented.

Based on his passion for the game, his respect for the players, his creatovity and marketing skills and his business sense, I think Rush would be a GREAT sports team owner.

    Here’s a couple questions:

    1. Would you rather the Royals be owned by David Glass or Rush Limbaugh?

    2. Would you rather the Chiefs be owned by Clark Hunt or Rush Limbaugh?

    My answers:

    1. Rush Limbaugh. No brainer.
    2. Clark Hunt because of his age and health, but I’d LOVE for Rush to be part of the Chiefs ownership.

I think the reason OU doesn’t allow fans back in if they leave at halftime is a direct response to the bomb scare they had a number of years ago.

I could be wrong but I thought I heard that was the reason.

The fans leave so they can smoke weed then return to the stadium.

Greg, do you know if K-State still has that home and home with the Miami Hurricanes? It was signed a couple of years ago to begin in either 2011 or 2012.

    JD,
I haven’t seen any record of Snyder canceling the Miami series…yet. Here’s the Miami press release form 2006 —

“Continuing to schedule Division I-A football opponents, the University of Miami has signed contracts to play home-and-home series with Kansas State in 2011 and 2012 and with South Florida in 2012 and 2013.”

smartman — Those loose meat Maid Rite sandwiches are tasty as well. Does that make you a Hawkeye fan?

Greg, I’m a NU homer that flies my MU flag in town to piss off the grifters on the west side of State Line. I go to Iowa once a month on biz and can’t resist those Maid Rites, especially since White Castle split from the Metro. As a guilty pleasure I hit St. Louis every two months and eat for the cycle, Lions Choice, White Castle, Del Taco and Carl’s Jr.

    Three things:

    1. The students were headed to The Hawk and Wheel
    2. Keitzman is still a dope
3 JG probably thinks it really is the “University of Mizzou”

    back to your regular programming………

Just an observer of the absurd. I think Mangino’s a good coach, considering what he’s done with a program that was crap since Alf Landon was a pup. Hard to have a lot of respect for a guy that looks like Jabba the Hut and Rosie O’Donnel’s love child. I watch KU games just to see if he’ll explode. He sets off the seismograph at Colorado Springs with every step. They shut it down during KU’s visits to Boulder so they don’t have to re-calibrate it. There’s a Japanese whaling ship on standby at Milford Lake just in case he decides to go for a swim, figuring they will be able to retire if they can pull him in without sinking the boat.

    – Kietz is wrong. The Big 12 North is developing into a beast of a division. K-State will have huge problems for at least 4-5 years. Nebraska is back, MU and KU are consistent Top 20 powers, and Colorado woke up from a shroom haze and decided to play football again.
    – Hands down, the Lawrence gameday experience is all about the drinking. It is all about pretty young people in blue T-shirts just getting freaking schnockered on the streets of Lawrence and wandering in and out of the stadium. Drunkest student section in the Big 12. Bar None.
    – Iowa State’s 36 points on KU was no fluke and they have a coach that will be there 20 years. Watch out for this guy Paul Rhoads.

SMARTMAN-You know there is a Maid Rite in Gladstone right? Wish Rax roast beef or Lions Choice was around here. even miss Jack in the box. Loved Black Eye Pea. Food…now that is my subject. I’ll have to make a trip to St. Louis for the cycle. Also always looking for a Griffs.

Rick: Where is the Maid Rite in Gladstone? Is it the real deal or a knock-off? There is a Griffs in Sedalia on 50 towards the east end of town. I miss Corndog 7. Used to be one downtown in the 1KC Place food court. THE BOMB of a corndog. Some of the naughty chicks that would eat there would fellate and deep throat their dogs. It was a erotic way to spend the lunch hour when you didn’t have time to hit the buffet at Bunn’s.

Maid Rite is in front of a Hy-vee. Its the real deal. If u want I can get the exact address. The Hy-vee has a gas station and in the shop where you go pay for your gas is the Maid Rite. The owner owns three of them which are spread out. I want to say he has one in Columbia and Omaha also. I do know this one actually does the best business. They close at 8PM. Good stuff. Never hear of the Corndog place. But got to ask you if you ever heard or ate at Nuway which they had one at Ward Park way years ago? Still one up in Leavenworth. Their are a couple of loose meat sandwich places in Independence. One is Mugs Up and can’t recall the other’s name right off the top of my head. They are fair. Though its not loose meat do you remember Smak’s.

Rick: Hell yeah I remember Smaks and the Chiefs Huddle Club, Smaky the Seal. Dude I went to high school with, his folks owned the Smaks in KCK. Went to Nuway quite a bit not to mention Dog ‘n Suds in KCK on 18th ST. NUCLEAR BOMB Root Beer. Also Peter’s Drive In in KCK on State Ave. Lot’s of racin and chacin’ out of that lot with speeding tix to boot.

How ’bout a Kitchen Sink from Fritz’s on 18th St. in KCK? We’d go to Smak’s on Chouteau by Antioch Center when we got off the bus coming back from Municipal Stadium, sitting in the Huddle Club, pelting the opposing teams with snowballs, ice, and anything else we could find to throw at them, as we were getting bombarded by the inner city kids that stood on the back of the bleachers at the high school to the west.

I think the other loose meat place I’m thinking of in Independence is Clems. I forgot all about Smaky the Seal. I recently ran across a Dog and Suds mug but was unaware their was one in this area. Sounds like I missed out on some good joints. Of course sadly in juts my short time I’ve seen some fall by the wayside. hard to believe Nichols is gone. And when I first came to KC I liked Wylies. Which sold chicken but I liked their hamburgers. I remember Arther Treachers up in Lawrence. Good food.

You’re talkin’ my lingo Uncle Dick. Fritz’s is still crankin’ out the Kitchen Sinks, CSC’s and Jody Burgers. The other blast from the past was Sandy’s. One day they just all shut down and six weeks later they were all converted to Hardee’s.

Rick, that Dog ‘n Suds mug might be worth some dough. You’re right about all the good joints that are gone. The old truckstops at 18th and I-70 and James Street and I-70 were great breakfast stops when the bars closed and there were always hookers lookin’ to “date”. There was the Kings Den rub and tug joint on Central Ave and I remember a head shop at 18th and State in KCK. I was maybe 11 the first time I wandered in there. The chick working was smokin hot. Long blond hair, mini skirt, long legs, boots and a skimpy top that showed of her perfect breasts That’s when I learned that a boner had something more to do then having to go pee.

Dick’s on Sante Fe in Olathe was good too. Big Burger on Vivion Road has awesome burgers and freakin’ humongous ice cream cones. In A Tub was a great spot after some 3.2 beer at King James on Minnesota or the Merry Go Round down on the Blvd. Puked up a ton of those puppies. Wolfburger on Metcalf was a popular joint. Always enjoyed Winstead’s on the Plaza. Great burgers there, and the food was good too. Shakey’s Pizza was a good hangout, as was The Funhouse on 50 Highway in Raytown. Used to go to Caper’s Corner and BS with Asner. Or Milton’s downtown because he didn’t card. Used to go to the Redman’s Club out in Lenexa, back when you had to have a club card and a liquer pool card. Coya’s Castle and Freedom Palace, Cowtown Ballroom and the Vanguard were hip spots. Saw Steve Martin with Nitty Gritty in ’74 before anyone knew who he was.

Been to in a tub don’t know the rest. Uncle Dick please take no offense but are you old enough that you remember the Playboy club in KC? I’m not that old but I remember hearing about it.

  34. Anonymous says:

    Uncle Dick
No offense taken. I wasn’t old enough to get in, but there was a de-vorced lady in our neighborhood who was a Bunny. The old bags in the neighborhood used to talk about her behind her back. Gal had a great rack and a decent back porch. One of my teachers in HS used to bang another of the Bunnys; she was in Playboy when they did a pictorial of Bunnys from around the country. Her name was Coke, and it wasn’t because she was a fan of Atlanta’s favorite soft drink. The KC Playboy Club was a big deal, you had to buy a key and the drinks were about 5 times higher than down the street on 12th street. Now that was the place if you were 21 and horny. I was horny, just wasn’t 21. When they cleared them off for Bartle Hall, our convention biz died a quick death. They took away the reason most conventions came to town. Ironic, huh? We had a decent convention center, but no strippers or burly-Q, and all the hookers had to move to Merriam.
