Hearne on the Street: Russ Johnson for Mayor, Soren’s Short Fuse & Mushroom Cloud Engulfs Waldo

A funny thing happened while I was trying to track down former KCMO AM / KMBZ 980 host Russ Johnson

I got

KC Councilman Russ Johnson.

Not a problem.

Everyone else and his brother is contemplating a run against KC Mayor Mark Funkhouser in 2011, how about RJ?

“I’m not running for mayor, period,” Johnson says. “I have no desire to run for mayor at this time.”

At this time – how about down the road?

“Maybe when I’m retired and have gray hair I’ll look at it,” Johnson says.

Once The Well looses it’s newness the frat guys will all go back to the Brooksider and Power and White and give us our area back.

The service at The Well is AWFUL. When the honeymoon is over all will be back to normal.

I have had three great experiences at the Well. The food was great and service was with a smile. I’ll be back!

Gary Lezik confirms that Soren has a high pitch voice when he gets excited.

As a longtime Waldo resident, may I be the first to say, f— you, Chris Lewellyn.

The Well has also been really, really successful at one thing in particular – pissing everyone off. The neighbors hate it because that area wasn’t supposed to get a new liquor license. Now, not only is there another bar in the neighborhood, but the din of drunken, high-volume opinion sharing can be heard for blocks. Yay.

The local businesses hate it because it took the Lews about 30 seconds to secure that liquor license that everyone has to jump through hoops for, and because now there’s nowhere to park anymore along Wornall. You want to talk about why business is down in the other Waldo bars, you might mention that the parking is a total friggin mess now. Waldo Pizza has to do curbside carryout because their customers can’t park in the lot across the street anymore. How the Lews got their occupancy and parking okay’d by the city, I have no clue.

Oh, and people at the bus stop across the street hate it because they get bottles tossed at them by the fratboy dbags on the Well deck. Forget a neutron bomb, the Well set off a Moron Bomb in Waldo.

So Lew can blow smoke about being the spiritual heir to some bar on the Plaza, but what Baja 600 has going for it is that it’s on the Plaza, overlooking Brush Creek, not on top of a vacant video store with a view of a car wash. If this place dries up and blows away this winter, Waldo will be better off for it.

I have been to the Well once. I went on the deck and had a drink. I haven’t had a chance to dine there yet. It was OK. The upper deck is nice and the open window look on the bottom was cool. But really you take those away this winter and it’s just another Tanner’s or any other sports bar. I wouldn’t go out of my way to drive there just to have a beer. It really is unfair how they got their license so quickly and how it’s disrupting businesses that have been operating awhile.

Waldo = Douche-Central. Lew’s, Kennedy’s and The Well have made it so. Used to be a lot of bars with some character, but now it just seems to be unbearable. Maybe I’m just getting old.
