Please, tell us more about Bill Self.
Coach Self he has the best show in a 600 mile radius. We are lucky to have a real coach like him around here. Coach Self is a players coach, a fans coach and a sportswriters coach.
He make me, and hopefully everyone, feel very happy, He really does:)

What’s interesting about Self is he could be a classic case of arrogance if he wanted to be: High school stud athlete, division 1 athlete, married a chearleader, tremendous success at every level of coaching. But he’s just a flat out great guy.
And I don’t have a problem with Mangino. I think he’s just like Bill Snyder. Except Snyder has had a little more success and he’s an old guy….so being grouchy is more acceptable.

I enjoy the natural flow of quickly typed/published comments. When too much analysis is applied, things lose uumpah. Bang it out, publish it, and get moving. Small typos are no big deal.

Ironic that Mangino has thin skin. Wright is correct. Friends and family in Lawrence agree on the comparison. Self is a proven entity. Mangino has a few more years to go in order to prove his success at KU is not schedule enhanced.

@ Alex Gordon: anyone care to tie this 4A status story in with the recent posts on JoPo’s blog and on Baseball Prospectus about the horrendous state of Royals player development? The Royals have had so many disappointments with high draft picks that it seems like they’re just starting to shrug their shoulders when another former first rounder fails to meet expectations. The problem in that is that they start expecting things to go wrong and never investigate WHY their drafts haven’t worked out the way they hoped. And I strongly suspect that the organization itself is the main culprit in those failures.
To put it another way: say you have 15 rocks that give every indication that they are diamonds, and drop them in a hypothetical machine to clean them up, polish them, etc. And after the machine is done working, all you have is 15 pieces of gravel, what are you blaming, the rocks or the machine?

I’m a huge Mizzou fan (in waistline and fervor) and I can without reservation say that Bill Self is one hell of a guy. I like Mike Anderson a lot … think he is a solid guy. But in my dealings with Self, he’s always been awesome. Really wish Mike Alden would have chosen Door No. 2 at the Airport Hilton some 10 years ago. A lot would have been different for Mizzou. Oh well, I’m happy with HCMA, but Coach Self would have been great.
p.s.–I’m in no way, shape or form saying that I don’t hate Coach Self’s guts during the season, I’m merely pointing out that he’s a good guy and someone kU fans should be proud of.

Sorry, Ptolemy, but no KU fans wanted Bill Self gone after he’d JUST GOTTEN THEM TO A FINAL FOUR!! I’m sure a few loose cannons who wanted him gone after those painful losses to Bradley & Bucknell, but I’m pretty certain more MU fans wanted Gary Pinkel gone after a couplle of step-on-his-dick losses to KU than wanted Bill Self dumped.
As for Mangino being arrogant, I am shocked, SHOCKED to hear stories about a football coach being arrogant and accustomed to thinking he is Lord of All He Surveys. Why, I’ll bet Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, Jimmy Johnson, Barry Switzer, Bill Belichick, Bear Bryant, Darrell Royal and countless others would be or are clutcing thier pearls in horror and embarrasment over Mangino’s antics. Those guys were never disdainful of the media and were never ever arrogant or unreasonable in their demands of others. And, for the record, I am NOT comparing Mangino to those other coaches. I’m merely pointing out that an arrogant football coach is about as newsworthy and surprising as Whitlock eating a short end and fries.
By the way, how was Mangino supposed to answer the question as to whether KU is the best team in the Big XII North? Deny it and send the message to his team that he has no faith in them? Accept it and give Bo Pelini, Gary Pinkel and Bill Snyder bulletin board material and the ability to play the “they don’t respect us” card? Yeah, I suppose he could have been cuddlier about it, but there is no good way to answer that question beyond not answering it at all.

Mark Mangino is doing exactly what he needs to do which is to coach and win football games. Every coach is not going to be like Bill Self. There are plenty of examples of good coaches who were not exactly media friendly.
Would it be better for Mangino to be media friendly? Sure, because sooner or later he might like some support if times get tough.
I think Mangino is a tough guy probably because he rose from nowhere to become a head football coach and being heavy I am sure that he has endured a lot of critical comments through his life which probably makes him even more guarded and defensive.

WOW, did I actually see you call Mangina “Great”? That’s a bit of a stretch. Finishing above 3rd once in your tenure and no division titles are not exactly the stories of greatness.
