To be fair, I was listening to Hamblin today as well, and I don’t think that he was referring to tonight’s start against Oakland as “this.” He seemed to be speaking more about this particular call-up, judged in its entirety whether at the end of the season or sometime sooner than that.

When was Soren Petro annointed ‘Mr. Baseball’ in Kansas City? Get over yourself, man. You are a ‘sports talk show host’–a position just below the bat boys in the scheme of things in the sports universe.
Maybe Greg and the ‘three stooges’ in the booth with you are impressed, but you’re too often coming off sounding like a spoiled, obnoxious clown. It’s entertaining–until you’ve heard it for the umpteenth time. Give US a break.
Look at you, Soren–you’ve went from sniffing jocks on the Royals radio network to faking tantrums with callers who dare disagree with you on-air. Do you need ratings THAT bad? No.
Your listeners put up with hours of wasted segments consisting of four guys screwing around, mini-monologues that pass for questions with guests, more sales promotions than Monty Hall, and Chiefs season tickets shoved down our throats–now we get to be insulted as well?
I miss the Soren Petro of earlier years, before he started thinking his stuff didn’t stink–whatever happened to that guy???

    Danny,
I didn’t get that impression from Hamblin’s comment. Cowboy disagreed with him in that he thought Hochevar deserved more rope than Hamblin was willing to give him. Hamblin then went on to say that despite his comment, he had a Hillman-like gut feeling the Hochevar would have a great game in Oakland. But unlike Soren, I could be wrong.

    Greg,

I heard Petro’s meltdown and I feel that he forgets that many of the fans are just starting to get interested in the Royals and have not been looking at managerial strategy for a long period of time. Personally I think he is right about Hillman’s strategy but I have watched a lot of baseball including Whitey Herzog and Dick Howser who were masterful managers of the game. If his callers don’t have that frame of reference then it is Petro’s job to inform but not go ballistic about it.

This is why I love your column. I can’t listen to the radio all the time but I’ll never miss a single meltdown thanks to you. Staged or not, nothing makes me laugh more (or keep tuning in) than a good radio host erupting for no reason.

This is how most people feel about the managers impact on a baseball game. If they win the manager made all the right moves and if they lost he made all the wrong moves.

Arguing minutia is the only way petro can fill that fourth hour when crunch time dropped.

I’ve always thought of baseball managerial strategy as being kind of like blackjack…there are lots of no-brainer plays and lots of tweener plays. In this case, it felt like Hillman did something a little bone-headed, but hitting a 17 will still work out every once in a while.

I love it when Petro gets pissed. That’s what I love about the guy. Let’s face it a lot of idiots call into sports talk shows…and all talk shows for that matter. Petro knows the game and I think he tries, too hard some times, to educate people. Unfortunately, it’s all subjective in most cases. Petro could certainly hang and succeed in a bigger market and I think one day he will. I prefer him this way as opposed to him dishing our blow jobs to Carl Peterson or pimping Chiefs tickets.

Soren is an idiot. “I’ve never seen such a stupid act defended.” Ok Soren how about you and your defense of Brodie being the Chiefs quarterback injury after injury. Or maybe you slamming Cole Aldrich after he literally had a record breaking game in the tournament and you saying “He is going to have to do more.” Soren is just clueless. Go play some trivia games with Pete that is EXCITING radio!!! Geeezz…

I enjoy stump the chumps. Its better than “Welcome back to the program…Now let me take 5 minutes to tell you about Pizza Shoppe or Hardees or Custom Sight and Sound….”

    Give me a break.
